high in OFSSA running
South Huron's senior girls'
cross country team capped
off a very successful season,
finishing seventh in Ontario.
A total of 18 conferences
were represented by two
teams of runners and the top
three individuals from the
conference, bringing the total
runners to 234 for the OFSSA
event.
To keep the number of run-
ners down for OFSSA, only
the best five runners from
each team are allowed to
compete in the race. Other
team members jog the course
the day before the
competition.
Rosemary Regier was the
first South Huron runner in
the pack of 234 to cross the
finish line. Regier finished
31st in the time of 20:09. If
Rosemary Regier had com-
peted in the midget race, be-
ing eligible to do so, it is
estimated that she would
have finished within the top 15
runners of the province.
Sheila Regier was the next
local runner to finish the race.
She placed 75th in a time of
21:15 and was followed by
Lindy Dillon in 92nd spot.
Coach Joe Fulop praised
the effort of his runners.
"Sheila Regier ran her best
race of the year, Lindy Dillon
did as well."
All five South Huron run-
ners finished the event in the
top half of the field. Jeanette
Van Esbroeck crossed the
finish line in 96th place and
Irene Dietrich finished 112th.
Fulop was hoping for, but
not expecting, the senior girls
to finish within the top ten for
the province. A seventh place
STEPHEN JUNIORS WIN — The junior girls champion-
ship of the recent area public school cross country meet
was won by Stephen Central. Back, left, Christine

finish among 36 represen-
tative teams was a pleasant
surprise for the young team.
One noteable fact. The local
girls placed 103 points ahead
of Montcalm at the OFSSA
meet. The South Huron run-
ners finished second to the
Montcalm senior girls at the
WOSSA meet.
Waxers split,
Bantams win
The Exeter Waxers gained
an even split in two regular
Shamrock league hockey
games this week.
The novice aged youngsters
dropped a 4-2 decision in St.
Marys Wednesday and bounc-
ed back Sunday at the South
Huron Rec Centre to defeat
Strathroy by a score of 5-0.
In St. Marys the two clubs
scored one goal apiece in the
first period and after a
scoreless second session, Rob
Wagner gave the Waxers a
brief lead early in the final
period on a three-way passing
combination with captain
Sean McCann and Ted Hoff-
man. The first Exeter goal
came from the stick of Ian
Jean on an unassisted effort.
Kevin McCotter was the top
scorer for St. Marys with a
hat trick performance. Cap-
tain Steve Hudson scored in a
single fashion.
The Waxers scoring in the
victory over Strathroy started
with a two goal effort in the
first period. Rob Wagner was
the initial marksman on
passes from Ted Hoffman and
Sean McCann and Marty
DeBruyn finished off a three-
way effort with Ian Jean and
Trevor Taylor.
Ted Hoffman fired a pair of
second period markers to put
the Waxers up by four goals.
Sean McCann drew assists on
both scores and Rob Wagner
helped on one.
In the third period, McCann
convereted a pass from
DeBruyn to complete the Ex-
eter scoring.
Darren Kints was in the Ex-
eter goal to gain the shutout.
Bantams win
The Exeter bantams scored
an impressive 7-2 victory over
Lambeth in an exhibition
game Saturday at the South
Huron Rec Centre.
After Lambeth had taken a
2-1 lead midway through the
second period, the Exeter
youngsters bounced back
with six unanswered scores.
Steve Anderson scored the
only goal of the first period on
an unassisted effort to give
Exeter the early lead.
Anderson converted a pass
from Shawn Moore and Scott
Bell finished off a three-way
passing combination with
Steve Lingard and Jon O'Con-
nor to equal the score at 11:30
of the second period.
Only 29 seconds later, Steve
Lingard notched what proved
to be the winning goal with
assists going to Scott Bell and
Jon O'Connor.
In the third period, Steve
Anderson, Scott Bell and Jon'
O'Connor completed the Ex-
eter club's scoring with Bell
getting the only assist.
Shuffleboard

league at the South Huron
Rec Centre is now in it's se-
cond year of operation and
drawing a large number of
competitors.
in Tuesday's ladies play,

gregate of 184. Edith Love

tively. Vi Sweitzer was fourth.

day's mixed play with three

pleting the scoring list were
Edith Love at 208, John
Eberle 1951 and Marion [)ear-

BOWLS OVER — Under this pile of football players is SHDHS junior Panther running bock Scott Heywood
scoring one of his team's touchdowns in Thursday's semi-final win over Palmerston. The team will travel
to Wingham, Saturday, for the Huron -Perth conference championship game and the Tocols will be hoping
to create more piles such as this across their opponent's goal line.
In Wingham, Saturday
Junior Panthers reach HP final
South Huron's junior foot-
ball team advanced to the
Iluron Perth final, Thursday
with a 30-0 shut out over
Norwell of Palmerston. The
senior griders were
eliminated from action, losing
their semi-final match to
Listowel in a close 15-8 battle.
Tim Moore opened the scor-
ing in the junior match -up,
punting the ball deep into the
end gone from the Norwell 35
yard line for the single.
Moore added another six
points when he ran the ball in
from the 20 to record the ma-
jor. Jon O'Connor converted
the Moore touchdown to make
the score 8-0 at half time.
Scott Heywood scored the
first of his two touchdowns
when he carried the ball in
fro n four yards out. Moore
cot. ierted the major on a
passing play from Jerry
Lamport.
Again from in close,
Heywood scored his second of
the afternoon early in the
fourth quarter after a sustain-
ed drive covering most of the
field. A missed convert at-
tempt left the score 22-0 with
time running out.
Jon O'Connor counted for
the fourth South Huron major
of the game on a quarterback
sneak from inside the one
yard line. Once again O'Con-
nor was successful on the con-
vert attempt.
Sivilay Sengkhounmany
rounded of the game's scoring
on the kick-off following the
final South Huron touchdown.
Sengkhounmany bounced the
ball into the Norwell end zone
with the wind at his back from
65 yards away.
Bad weather was the big-
gest factor throughout the
junior match. A steady rain-
fall and strong wind forced
both teams to keep the ball on
the ground.
Even with a constant rain-
fall and slick field, the junior
griders did not fumble the ball
all afternoon. However
weather conditions caused the
opponent to fumble the ball
away three times including
one inside the Panther's 25
yard line.
The Panthers' defense
played a very strong game
considering the absense of
sevefal key players. Coach
Dave Cox filled the vacant
positions with players from
his offense. As many as four
players will see action both of-
fensively and defensively in
Saturday's final.
Saturday, the junior squad
travel to Wingham for the
league final. Cox expects the
game to be tough and the
Panthers will have to play
their best to win. "If we play
well I expect we'll have a
good chance of claiming the
championship."
In their previous meeting,
the Wingham team emerged
victorious by a close 12-4
margin. The rematch kicks
off at 1:00 on Wingham soil.
Supporting fans would be
much appreciated in the
juniors quest to bring a
fooball championship back to
South Huron.
The senior griders were put
out of action, dropping a 15-8
decision to Listowel.
The locals controlled the
first half until the final
minute. Brian Topp opened
the scoring in the first
quarter, recording a single
point after a missed field
goal.
Scott Bogart scored the on-
ly South Huron major of the
game on a pretty 55 -yard ef-
fort after pulling in a pass
from Scott Miller. Steve
Gould converted the major
and the locals took an eight -
point lead and appeared to
control the tempo of the
game.
After pinning the Lords
down inside their own 10 -yard
line, the game took a com-
plete reversal when the Pan-
ther secondary got fooled on
a pass from a sweep that end-
ed up covering 100 yards.
The locals still led 8-6 at half
time after Listowel failed to
convert the major. The Pan-
thers out rushed their oppo-
nent 121 yards to 34 in the first
half, a stat which almost
totally reversed for the se-
cond half.
South Huron's defence fail-
ed to control the line of scrim-
mage the second half which
allowed Listowel running
backs to gain big yards both
outside and up the middle.
Listowel scored their se-
cond touchdown of the game
on a .six yard running play
late in the third quarter to
take the lead for good. The
Lords added another three
points on a 15 yard field goal.
"It was our first half, and
their second," coach Ron
Bogart said, "One big play
beat us."
The seniors ended the
season with a record of four
wins and three losses, losing
their first two and last game
of the season. The senior final
kicks off at 1:30 when the
Goderich Vikings take on
Listowel in Goderich.

ing effort to Tillsonburg in

The senior cagers lost once
again when they faced the
host school Clark Road. The
locals found themselves on

39-13 score. Cottrell and

scorers with eight and four
respectively.

tourney action in Landon. The
final tally was 29-28 with
Diane Dearing leading the
scoring with nine points.
Laurie Forrester and Beth
Sweeney couhted for five and
four points respectively.
Dearing again led the scor-
ing when the local juniors fell
47-36 to Medway. Dearing had
ten points and collected nine
rebounds in the match.
Cheyenne Mosurinjohn and
Kristen Lovie each added six
while Laurie Forrester had
five points.
Clarke Road defeated the
local juniors as well in their
tournament, winning by a
27-21 margin. Kristen Lovie
paced the way for South
Huron with eight points while
Forrester had six points.
Both cage teams travelled
to Wingham to take on Madill,
yesterday for their last league
game. A win for the senior
squad could mean a berth in
the quarter finals while the
juniors should finish third or
fourth depending on other ac-
tion this week. A third place
finish would mean home court
advantage Tuesday for the
quarter finals.
