Two loyal churches to celebrate
The Bethel Reformed

Reformed Church are jointly
celebrating the birth of the
Reformation this Sunday
evening October 28 at 7 p.m.
in the Exeter Christian
Reformed Church.
Speaker for this service will
be Rev. B. DeJonge; Rev.
Abram Blaak will conduct the
service. As special music a
seven piece brass band call-
ed Rejoice will present four
numbers as well as leading in
the song service.
Asked why such an event
was being celebrated, Rev.
De Jonge commented - "The
Reformation is the foundation
of much of our spiritual and
theological heritage. A great
many of our present-day
denominations trace their
roots to this event. The past
serves as a compass to chart

future, as the historian -
philosopher Santanya said it
'Those who forget the past,
will repeat it'." What was it
about the Reformation that is
so important?
"The central truth of the
Scriptures was re -introduced
into the Church, that being,
the centrality of Christ's
death and resurrection as the
only ground for faith and life.
A re -affirmation that Christ is
Lord over all of creation and
all of life must be conditioned
by this truth."
Responding to the implica-
tion that the reformation was
a sectarian event and as such
is out of touch with today's
realities of ecumenism De
Jonge commented, "The
Reformation essentially con-
cerned the recovery of the
basic beliefs the Scriptures
and the Church. It was an ef-
fort to restore faith and life

of the Word. These truths are
central to many churches and
are being discovered in many
places today, especially in
missionary oriented con-
gregations. As such the
Reformation then is a most
ecumenical event - all chur-
ches are being recalled to
their biblical foundations."
The emphasis in this refor-
mation service, De Jonge
commented, is on the
availability of the Scriptures
that the Reformers insisted
on. The one immediate result
of the Reformation was a
translation of the Vulgate in-
to vernacular German. Thus
after the service a mis-
sionary, Mr. Peter Mulder
working in the Honduras will
present an overview of his
work which is church planting
and Bible instruction.
The two Reformed Chur-
ches of Exeter are sister con-
gregations in the reformation
as well as Lutheran churches,
Presbyterian and Mennonite
churches.
