Tuckersmith applies for government sponsored employment programs
By Wilma Oke
Tuckersmith township
council will apply for two new
programs, both sponsored by
the provincial government.
Both of these are Ontario
Youth programs. For one the
government will pay $4.00 an
hour or full salary, 100 per-
cent, for one person who must
have been unemployed for at
least three months and with
an education of Grade 11 or
less.
For the other program the
government will pay $2.50 per
hour toward the salary of a
person unemployed for three
months, while the township
will only have to contribute
$1.50 per hour.
Both these employees can
be used for six months to do
general work in the township,
but mainly at Vanastra, such
as maintenance work or park
clean-up.
John Brownridge,
Tuckersmith's representative
on the Seaforth and area land-
fill site, reported that the
committee has two sites
under consideration at this
time, one in the area of
Seaforth sewage lagoon and
the other on the farm of Ar-
thur Varley.
This new landfill site being
sought will serve the town of
Seaforth, and the townships of
McKillop and Tuckersmith.
NEW CUBS - Jeremy Reid , (left) Michael Funk, Daniel Bengough, Rick Albert and
Brian Funk line up to register for the coming term with Hensall Cubmaster Ken
Clarke.
Earlier this year a site north
of Seaforth was found to have
inadequate soil structure for
a landfill site.
Brownridge reported that
at this time preliminary tests
indicate the soils are accep-
table both at the Varley farm
and the lagoon site, council
agreed that the Varley site
was preferable because it is
isolated, while the lagoon site
is too close to the residential
areas of Harpurhey and
Egmondville, and even
Seaforth would be affected
because of the prevailing
winds.
Several members of council
said they had many calls
fi om both Harpurhey and
Egmondville residents con-
cerned about where the land-
fill site might be located.
Brownridge said the pre-
sent Seaforth landfill site east
of Seaforth will be cleared in
April by the Ministry of the
Environment because it is fill-
ed. To be prepared for a place
Tour attracts applicants
Solicitor General George
Taylor and OPP Commis-
sioner Archie Ferguson said
this week they weredelighted
with the results of a campaign
to encourage more women to
seek out careers as police
officers.
"A provincial tour con-
ducted by Constable Sherry
Baker has been an outstan-
ding success in attracting
women applicants interested
in police careers," Taylor
said.
Constable Baker, an OPP
officer for 10 years, was
recently named Affirmative
Action Manager for the On-
tario Ministry of the Solicitor -
General. The OPP is part of
that ministry.
Commissioner Ferguson
had said before Constable
Baker's tour that in the 75th
anniversary year of the OPP,
a priority would be to attract
an increased number of
women candidates to apply to
the OPP.
"Constable Baker's tour
has shown that the interest is
there," Commissioner
Ferguson said, noting that the
number of applications from
women had increased by 170
percent for the first six
months of 1984 as compared
to the same period in 1983.
Solicitor General Taylor
noted that the percentage of
women applicants for OPP
policing jobs has increased
from less than nine percent to
21 percent this year.
"This is a welcome in-
dicator of increasing interest
by young women in what is a
challenging and rewarding
career opportunity," the
Solicitor General said.
Commissioner Ferguson
said that no quota for the
number of female recruits
has been set, and the Force
wants the best qualified ap-
plicants regardless of sex.
Constable Baker said she
was appreciative of the
assistance of the media in her
efforts to encourage women
to consider police work as a
career option.
During her tour of 40 On-
tario municipalities, Con-
stable Baker participated in
nearly 150 newspaper, radio
and television interviews.
