South Huron gage teams win
The South Huron girls'
basketball teams started
their season off on a succesful
note. The junior and senior
girls recorded wins, defeating
Norwell.
South Huron has three
teams entered in the Huron
Perth conference, this year
being the first time the school
has ever entered a midget
girls' team. Due to the
absence of last year's junior
coach, Pat Rowe, the
coaching duties are handled
by Terry O'Rourke. O'Rourke
has called on four senior
students, Stephen Merner,
Scott Lovie, Rob Tait, and
Scott Merrylees to assist with
the three teams.
The senior girls had to
come back in the second half
in order to win Thursday.
They found themselves down
by nine points at the half, and
were able to tie the score by
the end of regulation time,
forcing the game into over-
time. The Panthers came out
of the three minutes of over-
time ahead 33-32.
Jackie Cottrell led the
South Huron scoring attack
with 23 points. Irene Brand
added seven points and
eleven rebounds, Andrea
Zimmer had two points with
Diane Willis rounding off the
scoring with one.
The senior girls are a very
young squad with only four
returning players: Jackie
Cottrell, Irene Brand, Diane
Willis, and Andrea Zimmer.
O'Rourke was forced to use
two junior girls, Shelly tomes
and Liz Cottrell to fill the
senior roster. Other team
members include: Julie Lam-
port. Christine Coates, Julie
McBride, Tracy Remkes and
Karen Rowe.
A total of 34 girls came to
try out for the Junior girls'
basketball team. O'Rourke
kept the maximum 15 girls on
the roster. The starting lineup
consists of Diane Dearing,
Kelly Whiteford, Beth
Sweeny, Christine Lovie and
Denise Benning. All five of
these girls were members of
last year's team.
The junior team opened
with a decisive 58-17 win over
Norwell, making the long
drive to Palmerston wor-
thwhile. The scoring was well
spread out. Kelly Whiteford
scored eight points, as did
Beth Sweeny. This experienc-
ed junior team is expected to

at Thorndale
' The second round of the
1984 ATV Supercross series
was held Friday night at the
Thorndale fairgrounds, with
over 40 riders competing for
points towards the Series
Championships to be held on
Sunday October 14 at Hully
Gully near Varna. Round one
of the series was held at
Delaware Speedway in early
August.
CRC Productions of Clinton
designed and built the track in
less than twelve hours. It was
a tight and demanding track
that had to be ridden with
respect.
In the 200 Modified Class
Byron Boyces, Clinton battl-
ed with Mike Rummey of
Strathroy in the first moto but
came up short on the last lap.
However, in the second moto
Kevin Williamson of
Camlachie beat both Boyes
and Rummey in a close bat-
tle that started at the first
turn and didn't end until the
checkered flag went up.
The 250 Mod was one of the
fastest races that ran. Riders
were hitting speeds of close to
60 miles per hour on the
straightaway. Jeff Howe, of
Minden winner of the first
moto, pulled the hole shot in
the second moto followed by
Chuck Collins of Varna, who
finished second in the first
moto.
At the half way point Collins
passed Howe at the double
jumps and never looked back.
They rode side by side for half
a lap, when Howe's front tire
hit the back end of Collins'
ATV pulling Howe into the
snowfence.

Fur control
The Ontario Trappers'
Association will have increas-
ing responsibility and control
over provincial fur resources
management under a new co-
operative agreement signed
with his ministry, Natural
Resources Minister Alan
Pope announced recently.
Pope said that the OTA has
already shown itself to be a
capable manager of several
provincial fur programs. The
OTA has been heavily involv-
ed in trapper education pro-
grams and in the develop-
ment and implementation of
the new private lands fur
management program.
The OTA recently
demonstrated its commit-
ment to wise resource
management by hiring a full-
time chief trapper instructor
who will place increasing em-
phasis on both humane trap-
ping and trapping ethics.
