Exeter will be represented in intermediate hockey
ranks in Western Ontario this coming season for the
first time in a number of years.
Lewis Mitchell is president of the newly reorganiz-
ed Exeter Mohawks and Doc Campbell will handle the
managerial duties.
Combining to take care of the coaching chores will
be Bob Rowe, Jack Chipchase and Barry Baynham.
The Mohawks will participate in the southern divi-
sion of the Western Ontario Athletic Association in-
termediate league along with Monkton, Drayton and St.
Clements.
Wingham, Teeswater, Ripley and Lucknow make
up the central section and the northern teams will be
Durham, Lions Head and Woodsford.
The Mohawks will get their first exhibition start at
the South Huron Rec Centre on Sunday, October 14 at
8:30 p.m. with Forest Boyds providing the opposition.
They will hold their first practice this coming Sun-
day morning at 10 a.m. and any prospective players will
be more than welcome.
• With the 11 other intermediate WOAA teams com-
ing to town to meet the Mohawks, there will be lots of
variety this winter at the SHRC.
The junior Hawks will play their home games most-
ly on Friday nights and the Exeter Molting Hawks will
be back each Monday night following figure skating to
play a lot of different clubs.
Need rule changes
Two recent bean ball incidents involving the Toron-
to Blue Jays point out the fact changes are needed in
dealing with these types of situations.
The first incident occurred when Milt Wilcox of the
Tigers threw a pitch high over the head of a Blue Jay
batter and the umpire quickly warned both teams to
desist from further brushoff pitches.
All observers agreed the pitch wasn't close to hit-
ting anybody. In the very next inning 'Toronto hurler
Jim Clancy pitched close to Kirk Gibson of the Tigers
and he was immediately ejected.
Most pitchers try to keep the ball inside on Gibson
and it would be absurd to suggest Clancy was trying to
hit him especially with a runner on base.
Under present rules. the pitcher who causes the pro-
blem is only warned, but, if the opposing pitcher does
the same thing he is automatically tossed out.
It would appear much fairer it the second pitcher
also gets the same type of warning before being ejected.
The second focas occured when Dennis Rasmussen
of the Yankees threw at Willie Upshaw of the Jays. A
fight ensued and both were thrown out.
American league president Bpbby Brown followed
by suspending each player for three games. In this case,
the Blue Jays were without the valuable services of Up-
shaw for three games while the Yankee pitcher would
miss only one starting assignment at the most. It could
be possible for a pitcher in such a situation to not be
affected at all.
In addition the Yankee pitcher was the instigator.
If he doesn't throw at Upshaw's head, then the Blue Jay
doesn't run out to the mound in retaliation.
In Upshaw's situation, it was the first-time he was
tossed out of a game in his entire career.
I)ra w well
With one week to go in the major league regular
schedule the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays are
finished at home and both clubs set attendance records.
The Tigers drew 2,704,794 to Tiger Stadium and are
the only team to attract in excess of two million fans
at home and away. The .Jays with 2310.009 hit the same
magic number in their short eight years of existence.
The Tigers hit the I0() victory mark to make their
manager Sparky Anderson to win at least that amount
in both leagues. When Sparky was at ('incinatti his
teams reached the century mark at least three times.
The Blue Jays need four wins in their last six games
this week to reach the 90 victory mark which would be
a new team high.
Some fans may consider the Blue .Jays season a bit
of a disappointment, hut. that isn't really true They will
wind up with the fourth or fifth hest record of all 26 ma-
jor league teams.
General manager Pat Gillick has already indicated
a number of changes will take place over the winter
months.
We would suggest the ,Jays could trade al (east one
infielder and one mil fielder to get the much needed help
they•need in the bullpen. Add to that al least one free
agent and things should be a lot bel ter at ( F: Stadium
next summer.

Panthers split with Stratford in HP footba!I opener
The Huron -Perth football
season opened Thursday with
the South Huron teams play-
ing host to Stratford Nor-
tnwestern. It was a successful
start for the junior squad,
defeating the Stratford team
25-0. However, South Huron's
senior football team unfor-
tunately came up on the los-
ing side of a 10.0 score.
This year coach Dave Cox

ONE OF FOUR — Scott Heywood (33) crosses the Stratford goal for one of the four
touchdowns he scored to lead the junior Panthers to their lopsided win, Thursday.
The downed Stratford players give evidence to the blocking which helped Heywood
in his successful romp.
GOING'NOWHERE — Senior Panther runner Bill Fisher is stopped by a swarming
Stratford Northwestern defence in the football opener at the local school, Thurs-
day. Fisher and his mates failed to gain much ground and ended up on the losing
side of a 10-0 count.
OFF AND RUNNING — Jon O'Connor (14) displayed some solid running as well
as directing the offence in his initial game at quarterback for the SHDHS junior foot-
ball team, Thursday. The young quarterback engineered his team's 33-0 win over
Stratford Northwestern.
ANOTHER FLAG - The South Huron senior Panthers were moved back on several
occasions due to penalties in their football opener, Thursday. Above, Steve Batten
puts the grip on a Stratford runner while Shawn O'Rourke and Rob Bryson -move
in to help with the tackle, but it went for nought as a penalty moved Stratford closer
to the goal anyway.

has 30 players on the junior
roster. Nineteen of these
players return from fast
year's team which made it as
far as the championship
game before being beaten by
Goderich.
In Thursday's match, Scott
Heywood scored all of the ma-
jors for the junior team.
Heywood ran for four
touchdowns and covered 154
yards in 21 carries. Larry
McCarter was called on for
short, tough yardage up the
middle.
Jon O'Connor kicked two
extra points and Jerry Lam-
port connected on a pass with
Tim Moore for a two point
conversion after the snap
from centre was bobbled.
Moore added one more point
on a 60 -yard punt that sailed
through the end zone with the
help of a strong wind.
This season the quarter-
back duties for the junior
Panthers are being handled
by Jon O'Connor, a grade nine
student. O'Connor passed for
35 yards against the Stratford
team, completing three of six
passes. Having never seen
game action, the young
quarterback handled the of-
fence well, and coach Cox
praised O'Connor's effort
after the game.
South Huron's defencive
stars were Roger Ward and
Vern Iskauskas. The whole
defensive line played well as
Northwestern was held to on-
ly four first downs.
After the game Cox stated
that the win took a good team
effort. "It was not just one or
two doing the job, the whole
team contributed to the win."
Again today (Wednesday)
it will take.a team effort to
come up on, the winning side.
The juniors face the defen-
ding champs, Goderich. Cox
expects a tough game.
Goderich usually is the team
to beat.
The senior team did not
fare so well on the field
against Stratford Nor-
thwestern, being shut out 10-0.
- The big story for the senior
Panthers was penalties and
the inability of the offence to
move the ball.
The Panthers were charged
twice for unnecessary
roughness on retaliation of in-
fractions which went unnotic-
ed by officials. The penalty
which hurt the team the most
came after the Panthers had
apparently stopped a Nor-
thwestern drive that came
within the ten yard line.
However, on the third down
play South Huron's defence
lined up off -side. This allow-
ed the Huskies one more at-
tempt to cross the goal line.
On this attempt the Huskies
made no mistake about it and
swept the ball three yards for
the only major score of the
game.
Stratford added a two point
conversion by running the
ball across the goal line after
a low snap from centre. Nor-
thwestern's other two points
came on a missed field -goal
and a punt that was fielded in
the end zone to be conceded
for the single.
Greys even
in finals
The Exeter Greys ladies
fastball team split two games
this week in the final series of
the South -Perth league.
The first game Tuesday
night, after a three-week
layoff, the girls lost 15-11 in a
slugfest which saw St. Marys
Blue Jays play a good style of
fastball and deserving the
win. The next game in St.
Marys, the Greys executed
much better and tied the five -
game series with an 8-2 win.
The next game in the series
was last night in Exeter and
the fourth game will he in St.
Marys, Friday night at 8:30
p.m. If a fifth game is
necessary, it will be Tuesday
night - October 2 at 9 p.m. at
the park in Exeter.

This season coach Ron
Bogart has chosen Scott
Miller and Tony Jones to
share quarterbacking duties.
Jones was sidelined for the
Stratford game after injuring
his shoulder earlier in the
week.
The offence found it hard to
get on the right track against
the Huskies. South Huron
picked up only five first
downs and Miller passed for
only 15 yards completing one
for five and -having one in-
tercepted early in the first
quarter. The offensive line
allowed Miller to be tackled
for a loss on three occasions.
The defensive story for the
senior Panthers was the in-
ability to shut down Strat-
ford's sweep. The Huskies
gained minimal yards up the
middle and completed only
one pass all afternoon.
Coach Bogart was forced to
make numerous subsitutions
due to injuries. Running back
Sean Whiteford was forced
out of the game early in the
second quarter after injuring
his foot. Also forced to leave
the field were Mark Penhale,
Trevor Johnson and Liam
Brennan. Brennan returned
to the field for one more play
