Keith Argent gets Long Point posting The Pinery Provincial Park is going to miss the service and friendly smile of long time employee,, Keith Argent. Argent , who has worked here nine years, says he's go- ing to miss Grand Bend. He has already been working at his new job at Long Point Pro- vincial Park since the begin- ning of August. He has been commuting weekly until he is able to move his wife Lana, and three daughters Jennifer, Stephanie and Kelly to their new home in Langton. Keith has been involved with the Optimist Club and enjoys sports himself, helping with baseball teams locally and is an active volleyball player. Legion Week From 1-4:00 p.m., Sunday, about 110 people enjoyed the wine and cheese party at the Legion Branch 498 in Grand Bend. President Keith Crawford welcomed everyone and then they observed two minutes silence. The opening feature ended with a movie called "It's a Long Way to Tipperary". Door prizes were won by Muriel Rimmer and Clark Kennedy. There will be a steak and barbecue this Saturday night at happy hours from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Everyone welcome. Darts will begin September 25 at 8:30 and euchre on Friday at 8:30. Play Continues At the Wednesday evening duplicate bridge play, Nan Cumming and Mary Ferguson finished in first place. The cost of the course is 110 and will be on Thursday evenings at 8:00 p.m. The following artists will be demonstrating their work: Kathryn Penhale from Ex- eter will be doing basket weaving on October 4; Dawn Crabe will demonstrate vegetable sculpture on Oc- tober 11; Carol Miller from Miller's Barn will speak on stencilling on October 18; Kazia Sodaro from Lewis Craft will show everyone the art of paper tole on November 1, Willie and Lu from Quilters Supply will speak on candlewicking and new quilting techniques on November 8. Halina Cravyford from Grand Bend will be doing stained glass on November 15; Gina Fisher from For Goodness Sakes will talk about using spices and natural ingredients in cooking on November 22; Catherine Junker also from Grand Bend will show everyone how to make corn husk dolls on November 29. Dawn Crabe will demonstrate quilling to the same evening. Dawn will also be talking about creative tree or- naments on December 6. Those at- tending the concert will have a chance to hear the choir sing many of the pieces that are on their newest Christmas album. This choir perforins at many functions in Sarnia each year and puts on two major concerts each spring as well. In 1979 under the direction of Pauline Levey, CHAMPS — The Grand Bend Squirt soccer team won the area soccer "A" title last week when they defeated Exeter 3 in a shoot out. Many people are looking forward to having this choir sing in Grand Bend. The second bonus concert will be presented by local musicians and photographers on Saturday, February 23. Variety is the key note for the Sound and Image concert. Ragtime rhythms, show tunes, folk songs as well as classical pieces will be per- formed on many different in- struments. The music will be presented by soloists, duets, trios and quartets. The flute and piano will be played by Lynn Tremain, the piano by Bob Enns, the clarinet by Frank Brennan. All three teach school in Forest. Dawn Crabe presi- dent of the Grand Bend Con- cert Association will be play- ing the flute and piccolo and two vocal selections will be performed by soprano Rober- ta Walker of Grand Bend. The natural features of the Blue Water area are to be presented in an entertaining slide show by Naturalist Terry Crabe and by Bob Tre- main, curator of the Lambton Heritage Museum. Andrew Southcott, former- ly of Grand Bend, will be returning from Boston to per- form in the Sound and Image concert. Southcott will play duets or trios with other members of the group and then treat the audience to a tew solos on his french horn. For the past two years, Southcott has been studying music with virtuoso Louis Moyse at the University of Boston. He also has a Music Education Diplc.ma from UWO and a Performers Cer- tificate from U of T. Only those with series tickets will be able to attend the bonus concerts. First Fall Meeting The Grand Bend UCW met on Thursday for their first fall meeting, with the theme "You're only old once." After a couple of readings, Clara Hamilton discussed "Dorcas- -woman from the Bible." All 17 members answered the roll call with cookies for the Cancer Society and a verse with the word "Peace" in it. A party will be held at the Bluewater Rest Horne on Thursday, September 27 at 6:30 p.m. The Regional for South Huron, in Zurich, will be held on October 11 at 6:30 p.m. with - Mrs. Gwyn Whiismith as guest speaker. The meeting closed with a nice lunch. First Meeting Six Grand Bend 111 4-H club girls met Monday, September 10 at 6:30 in the home of Loreen Gill. The leaders, Carol Allister and Loreen Gill, introduced the girls to the new "Fitness Fare" program. The members tested their knowledge of fitness by answering a food and fitness quiz. The new officers are as follows: president, Tracy Soldan; vice-president, Leanne Jennison; secretary, Tania Johnson; treasurer, Julia Brown and press reporter Linda Allister. They then discussed the four "s" of fitness -- stamina, structure, strength and sup- pleness and also the value of eating breakfast. Janet Allister, R.N., tested everyone's heart rate. "Sensible Snackers" was chosen as their club name. The girls then retired to the kitchen to make and sample "Cornbread with sausage"; a quick breakfast snack. By press reporter Linda Allister. Minors lose tourneys Colonials get four points The Grand Bend Colonials gained four points in the Lon- don and district first soccer division on the weekend by trouncing St. Columban 9-1 and blanking Saugeen of Port Elgin 4-0. The Colonials who meet London Portugese Sunday in London at 4 p.m. have a season league record of 11 wins, two defeats and a pair of ties. In the victory over St. ('o1- umban, Alex Harriet led the scoring attack with three goals. Nick Vandenberk and Tony Mennen each added two successful shots and Dave Michielsen and Kevin Sim- mons scored in single fashion. Tony Mennen contributed a three goal effort and Dave Michielsen was the lone scorer and Barry Bauer gain- ed the shutout agaiest Saugeen. In Ausable league action, Grand Bend blanked Nairn 4-0 as Bill Mennen booted two goals and singles were added by Frank Brenner and Joe Mommersteeg. Dave Groot- jen was in goal to repel all Nairn scoring attempts. In minor soccer tour- naments, the Grand Bend pee wees lost to llderton in the B final and the atoms lost similarily to Arva after defeating Exeter II 6-0 and 11- derton 4-1. Millie Desjardine gave a study on uprooted people. Several told of the time they moved to Canada and were uprooted. We were made aware of how many people in the world are uprooted and the devastation it can bring. On Sunday morning Pastor Campbell spoke on "A Dream is Lost," basing his text on Matthew 26:31-35, about Peter's denial of knowing .Jesus. Lucille Vincent sang "His Eye is on the Sparrow." The Bible Mountaineers are still welcoming children from grades 1-6 on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. Coffee Hour Resumes Sixteen ladies were out to the first fall meeting of the Bi- ble coffee hour in Nita Sinclair's home in Southcott Pines. Nita opened with prayer and led the lesson on the Beatitudes, from Matthew 5:10. Preceding the lesson, a hymn sing was led by Millie Desjardine and Vera Brown closed with prayer. Evening U('W The last meeting of the evening UCW was a delightful one with 22 ladies in atten- dance, which ended their spring season. The next fall meeting is scheduled for Mon- day, September 24 al 8:00 p.m in the Sunday School rooms.
