Squirts win
B crown
Three Exeter squirt teams
travelled to Nairn for their
annual playoff tournament. In
first round action Exeter I
lost to Grand Bend by a 3-1
score. Exeter I led most of the
way on a goal by Darryl Hart-
man but Grand Bend came
back in the last five minutes
of the game to score three
times for the win.
Exeter III saw action
against Lucan I and after 40
minutes of exciting action the
teams were tied 1-1 with the
Exeter goal scored by Chris
MacDonald.
Penalty shots had to decide
the winner and it was a heart-
breaker for the Exeter team
when Lucan I was a little bet-
ter in that department.
Both Exeter I and III went
to the consolation round and
played against each other
with the winner going in to the
B final. It turned into an ex-
citing game with both teams
creating opportunities but
most of the play taking part in
the midfield.
The game was decided in
the second half on an in-
dividual effort by Marty
DeBruyn who broke in alone
and beat the Exeter III goalie.
Final score 1-0 for Exeter I.
A fun season came to an
end for coach John
Hasenberg and his squad
while Exeter I went into the B
final against Arva. The
schedule of three games in
one day started to take its toll
on the little kids and the game
saw a lot of midfield play with
only a few opportunities for
either team.
After goalee Doug Wilson
had stopped an Arva
breakaway it was Marty
DeBruyn who put Exeter I in
the lead with a beautiful shot
from the edge of the 18 yard -
box and just before half time
Marty DeBruyn collected his
second goal of the game put-
ting the ball just inside the
post.
In the second half Arva
tried to come back by ex-
cellent efforts by Julia Brand
and Sheri Bierling stopped a
lot of the Arva attacks and the
game ended in a 2-0 win for
Exeter I giving Exeter I the
B championship; a repeat
performance for coach Tony
Martins from last year.
Exeter II in the meantime
had won their first game
against Denfield by a 2-0
score on goals by Shawn
McCann and were the only
team to defend Exeter's col-
ours in the A group.
In their second round
match the Exeter II team
gained revenge for their only
loss of the season against
league champion Lucan II by
beating them 3-0 in an ex-
citing game. Scoring for Ex-
eter II were Jamie Van Dam,
Shawn McCann and the third
goal was from an unidentified
player when the ball deflected
into the net on a goal mouth
scramble.
The win put Exeter I1 in the
semi-finals against a tough
team from Ilderton. The Ex-
eter team had a little more of
the play during the game and
Shawn McCann managed to
get one goal by the Ilderton
for a 1-0 Exeter win and a
place in the A final against
Grand Bend.
The Exeter team played
their hearts out in the final
but four games in one day had
taken their toll on the kids.
Both teams managed to score
one goal during the game but
both were called back and
even 10 minutes of overtime
could not decide the outcome
of the game.
Penalty shots had to decide
the game and the team from
(:rand Rend was just a little
better in that department. A
credit to the Exeter teams
defence is the fact that in its
last eight games it did not
concede a goal. Congratula-
tions to coaches Jim Nixon
and Andrew Winters on an ex-
cellent season and to the kids
for their great performance.
