Wire to wire.
That's the accomplishment of the 1984 edition of the
Detroit Tigers. Only a miracle can stop Sparky Ander-
son's team from winning the American league eastern
pennant.
At the time of writing with 19 games remaining for
the Tigers and 20 for the Blue Jays, the magic combina-
tion number of Detroit wins and Toronto losses is down
to nine.
The Tigers have received permission to print and
sell tickets for the AL playoffs and the World Series.
They will be sold through public mail order.
Ticket orders must be accompanied by a certified
cheque or money order, payable in United States funds.
Sales will be liminted to four tickets to the game of the
customer's choice, club president Jim Campbell said
in a statement.
The Tigers reserve the right to substitute tickets
depending on availability, the statement said.
If they win the division title, the Tigers would play
host to the final three scheduled American League
playoff games on October 5-7.
If the Tigers qualify for the World Series, they
would hold games three, four and five on October 12-14.
But that would change if the National League's
Chicago Cubs qualify for the Series. Because Wrigley
Field is not equipped for ”fight games, the Tigers would
play host for games one, two, six, and seven on October
9, 10, 16 and 17.
That also will force Tiger fans to indicate on their
ticket orders both a date and a corresponding code
letter.
For a non -Cubs series, the Tiger Stadium games
October 12-14 are designated games A, B and C.
For a series with the Cubs, games October 9 and
10 are designated A and B and games October 16 and
17 are designated C and D.
Mail orders for both the league championships and
the world Series should be addressed to: Detroit Tigers,
Agent; American League Championship Series; P.O.
Box 4646; Detroit, Mich., 48232.
Tickets for the American League playoffs are pric-
ed at: $20 for box seats, $15, reserved; $8 pavilion; and
$6 bleachers. World Series tickets are priced at: $30 for
box seats; $25, reserved; $15, pavilion; and $10
bleachers.
All orders must include a $3 handling charge and
a self-addressed stamped envelope, the statement said.
Orders must specify either American League
championship series or World Series and orders for the
playoffs and the series must be mailed in separate
envelopes.
No decision has been made on the sale of over-the-
counter tickets, the statement said.
On the same subject, officials of radio station WJR
in Detroit seem to be confident the Tigers will be in the
World Series and their opponent will be the Chicago
Cubs.
Thursday night, WJR carried a very extensive and
interesting program on the history of the Cubs, going
back to the early 1900's. Some of the more famous Cubs
mentioned were Charlie Root, Charlie Grimm, Stan
Hack and Ernie Banks.
Included was the famous World Series incident
when Babe Ruth is supposed to have pointed to the right
field fence just before hitting one of Charlie Root's pit-
ches into the same area.
The Cubs with a current six game lead over the New
York Mets appear to be fairly sure of winning their divi-
sion. Manager Jim Frey has been getting excellent pit-
ching performances from fellows like Rick Sutcliffe,
Scott Sanderson, Dick Ruthven and Steve Trout.

Exeter III takes area mosquito soccer league title
The championship for 1984
soccer season !lithe mosquito
division was decided this
week In the final game of the
season.
Before the start of the game
between Exeter 1 and Lucan
1 the latter could have clinch-
ed the title but a tie or a loss
would elevate the Exeter 1I1
team in first place in the stan-
dings. All season play bet-
ween the top six teams in this
division was very close and a
very close game was an-
ticipated but it did not turn
out that way.
The Exeter I team was all
charged up for this contest
and from the outset they took
the play to the Lucan team
passing and creating open-
ings at will and lots of scoring
chances. Exeter 1 was led by

eter I. By virtue of the win,
Exeter III took first place and
Exeter I and II tied for third
place. In the final standings
the top six teams were two
points apart and the final
team standings was deter-
mined by goals scored.
In pee wee action, the
championship has already
been decided with Exeter II in
first place. This week saw Ex-
eter 1 in action against Nairn.
The Exeter team had trouble
fielding a full team and later
in the game had to play a man
short because of injuries.
Nairn took a 1-0 lead at half
time with the Exeter team
trying to find their rhythm. In
the second half things went
better for Exeter I with Jason
McFalls and Henri DeBruyn
combining to creat some scor-
ing opportunities.

The local boys finished the
game with an outstanding
diving catch by Dave Russell
behind third to leave a Kin-

third after tripling with one

Darryl itic('ann made
numerous good plays
especially the one where he
was Tying on the ground after
stopping a grounder and
threw from the prone
position.
Dan Rooth showed his great
speed by keeping a 320 foot fly
ball to a single.
By winning the twin hill Ex-
eter now advances to the
WOAA championship against
Listowel.
A special mention goes to
Dave Dalrymple, a first year
pee wee who was pressed in-
to service as four of the ban-
tams didn't show up for this
important series. Dave
covered his defensive position
well and stood tough against
some extremely fast pitching.
Those parents, players, and
coaches who were involved in
these games appreciate his
efforts as he had the game
winning RBI in game one.
