Women Today seek input for brief on ehlld care
Susan has just landed a
good part time job at her
brother's business but can't
find reliable childcare for her
three year old daughter. San-
dra worries about the hour or
two her 10 and 8 -year-old
children spend alone between
the time they arrive home on
the bus and before she gets
home from work.
Linda has twins, four
months old and a two-year-old
but never has a break or a
chance to get away on her
own. John and Melissa worry
about leaving their small
children unattended while
they do barn chores.
Childcare is a real issue for
families living in Huron Coun-
ty. Many rural women from
across the province identified
daycare as a priority issue in
a recent study conducted by
the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food.
Women Today members
are concerned about the
variety of problems of many
rural families in assuring
quality care for their
children. That's why a com-
mittee of Huron County
Women will be presenting a
brief to the Standing Commit-
tee on Social Development
from the Provincial Govern-
ment on September 26 in
Stratford.
"One of the most pressing
concerns is that the only two
day care centres in Huron
County are being forced to
raise their fees oht of the
reach of most working peo-
ple," sai,d Debbie Wilbee,
Women Today Board
Member. "We're also con-
cerned about the lack of
organized centres in many of
our towns."
In preparation for their
presentation, Women Today
will be holding a workshop to
help prepare their brief. The
workshop will be held at the
Women Today office in Clin-
ton on September 20 at 7:30
p.m. If you have problems or
concerns about daycare or
childcare you are welcome to
cone and participate.
Statistics show there are
210,000 pre -school-age
children in Ontario whose
parents both work full-time or
whose single mothers or
fathers work full-time. What
do these parents do?

"We will be attempting to
identify the variety of pro-
blems that face all Huron
County families faced with
childcare needs, even if its
just a problem of Betting a
regular babysitter to give
parents a needed night out"
said Joanne Durst, member
of the committee.

Sy ALICE DICKENS

Last month during the plea-
sant weather, Craigholme
residents enjoyed many
outings. Several attended the
beef barbecue at Poplar Hill
on August 16 as well as a drive
through the parks in
Springbank, Exeter and
Strathroy.
A wide range of pets from
large dogs to gerbils were
brought by local children to
the yearly pet show and both
residents and children en-
joyed the show.
Denfield Mission Circle
treated the residents to an
entertaining yet funny fashion
show. The carnival on the
front lawn proved successful
having plenty of games. Ice
cream cones were quite
popular.
