Good food, good fun promised for Saturday

food and good entertainment
- is what Bean Festival presi-
dent Rick Fisher is promising
on Saturday August 25 for
Zurich's nineteenth annual
salute to one of the area's
most important crops, the
white bean.
Celebrations begin with an
old-fashioned breakfast of
pancakes and homemade
sausages served in the street
by the Zurich Minor Athletic
Association members.
This year for the first time
the Exeter Horse and Rider
Saddle Club will hold the sixth
of its seven annual horse
shows and competitions in
conjunction with the Bean
Festival. Action will begin at
9:00 a.m. in a ring set up
behind the Community
Centre.

The Junior Bs with their
ponies, the 13-to=18-year-old
Junior As and the seniors will
. all participate in halter,
equitation and Western
classes. In equitation the
rider is judged, and in
Western, the horse must pro-
ve itself. The trail classes
(obstacle courses) are also
scheduled for the morning.
In the afternoon the ex-
pected 20 to 30 contestants
will compete in gaming
events including barrel rac-
ing, a keyhole and a flag race,
and a Texas race which all
test riding speed precision.
Fun events like musical bags,
relay and steady hand races
will conclude a full schedule
of events in late afternoon.
Volunteers will begin serv-
ing the famous bean dinners
of ham, cole slaw, bread and
all the baked beans you can
eat at 11:00 a.m., and the kit-
chen will stay open until 7:00
p.m. After being hit last year
for the first time for Ontario
sales tax on the bean dinners,
Festival organizers have been
forced to raise the price of
this year's meal tickets to $5,
which includes the provincial
levy.
Federal agricultural
minister Ralph Ferguson will
drop in to the Bean Festival at
2:30 p.m. and stay until

til 6:00 p.m. Lee Paul,
Kirkton, one-half of the sing-
ing, fast -talking Paul
brothers, will MC a variety
show headlining some of the
aerobic dancers from the
popular TV show 20 -Minute
Workout. An, Octoberfest-
style band, the Hornets, will
play appropriate accompani-
ment for a village with Swiss -
German roots to celebrate the
local bean and the provincial
Bicentennial.
Another band, Brigand, will
set toes tapping with is folksy
jigs and reels. and the
Millers, a local group, will be
singing.
Organizer Alma Westlake
promises much more in the
variety show, a part of
Zurich's Bean Festival that
becomes more popular each
year, a "mustn't miss" event
for oldtimers, and a delightful
surprise to those seeing it for
the first time.
Contestants in the
horseshoe pitching are asked
to register between 12:00 and
1:00 p.m. on the arena
grounds for the Canadian
Horseshoe championship con-
test in the afternoon.
Free bus tours of the Co -Op,
Cook's and Thompson mills
will be available from 11:00
a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
The frog -jumping contest
leaps off at 3:00 p.rri.

Wallace says a few percen-
tage points have been added
to this year's cash prizes to
allow for inflation.
The thousands of people ex-
pected at the Zurich Bean
Festival will be able to
patronize the midway,
browse among the numerous
food and craft booths, and
observe various bean
demonstrations sponsored by
the Ontario Bean Marketing
Board. The Board has
donated 1,200 pounds of
beans, and each of three mills
has provided an additional 300
pounds to feed an expected
6,000 diners.
The nineteenth Bean
Festival will wind up with a
dance in the Zurich areana
beginning at 9:00 p.m., spon-
sored by the local athletic
association.
