Carinal 1111 1 Soccer clubs win at Sp,rtsf.st Six Exeter soccer teams travelled to Kincardine this weekend to participate in Sportsfest '84. Exeter with represen- tatives in all four divisions put on an excellent display of sportsmanship and dedication on their way to twoconsoli a - tion finals, one championship semi-final and one champion- ship final. In first round action things did not start off too well with four of the six Exeter teams losing their games and thus continuing in consolation play. The two teams that went to the championship group were the Exeter II squirt team coached by Jim Marion who after an exciting game beat a Kincardine entry by a 3-0 score. Scoring for the Exeter team were Jamie Van Dam with two and Shawn McCann. The Exeter I atom team also went to the championship round by virtue of a 1-0 win over Mount Forest. Scoring for Exeter I was Jason Heywood. The weather played an important role on this day with high winds and rain showers dampening a lot of the enthusiasm. Both entries in mosquito division lost their first games. Exeter I - Kincardine 0-2. Ex- eter II - Kincardine 0-4. Because of their losses both Exeter teams faced each other in semi-final consolation action and they continued their rivalry that has been established during this season's regular league play. Both teams are so close in strength that this time penal- ty shots had to decide the win- ner of a 0-0 final score. Exeter I won the penalty shooting Used Savings USED ENDURO 82 Hon. X1125 82 Suz. The Exeter team gave it everything but came up just short in a 2-1 decision. Scoring the lone Exeter goal was Steve Dubarry. - The peewee division turned into a real Exeter affair. After losing their opening game 3-0 to Mount Forest the Exeter II team received a bye into the consolation final. The Exeter I entry lost their first game tp Wallacetown by a 2-1 score. Exeter had ample opportunites to win this game but could not get on track. Lone goal for Exeter was scored by Henri DeBruyn. Exeter I then met Durham in a semi-final game. The Ex- eter team put things together early with Henri DeBruyn collecting four goals and then coasting to a 6-3 final score. Also scoring for Exeter were Christina Brintnell and Gary Wilson. This win put Exeter 1 up against Exeter 11 for the con- solation final. The contest was a repeat of previous contests, this season between both teams. Excellent display of soccer skills and excitement and excellent goaltending by Randy MacDonald and Tim McAllister and the rain did not seem to bother the players at all. At the end of regulation' time the score was still 0-0 and finally during two -10 minute overtime periods the Automatic lights By Lynne Farquhar For anyone who hasn't ven- tured up to the Rec Centre lately, you may not have noticed that the tennis courts are now lit. Due to the fact that these mercury vapour lights take 5-10 minutes to warm up and turning them off and on with usage is as costly as leaving them on, the lights are set on an automatic timer which firings the lights on at dusk and shuts them off at 11:30 p.m. Tennis enthusiasts will now be able to extend their play- ing season well into the fall if weather permits. Anyone in- terested in playing some ten- nis should contact club members Ron Cottrell or Da- mien Solomon. The "Pepsi Rock Video Party" is on at the South Huron Rec Centre, this Fri- day August 24 from 7:30 - 10:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend the three hours of Rock Videos on the giant screen complete with DJ and plenty of prizes in- cluding panasonic stereo headphones, walkmans, t - shirts and glow sticks. The show takes place on the arena floor, admission $2.00. Our program line-up is now starting to take shape with Trim -a -size, co-ed fitness classes, youth gymnastics, dough art, pine cone wreaths, ladies volleyball, a coaching clinic and various ice sports are coming your way this fall. Please give a call if interested 235-2833. We need you!! Exeter II team coached by Ron Hannah managed to pull out a 2-0 victory and take home the consolation trophy to Exeter. Scoring for Exeter I1 in overtime were Jeff Kints on a beautiful header and Chris Haugh. Exeter II squirts and Ex- eter latent teams had reach- ed the semifinal rounds of championship play by virtue of their wins in the opening round. Times -Advocate, August 22, 1984 Page 9 Exeter I atoms met a Durham team in their second game and gave it everything they had in a contest that saw chances on both sides with Durham being just a bit stronger. Exeter received standout goaltending from Ryan Stuart to stay close but Durham just edged out a 1-0 victory knock- ing Exeter I out of further play. . The Exeter I team fared much better. They met a Kin- cardine team in semi-final ac- tion and by virtue of a hard- fought 2-0 win reached the finals. Scoring for Exeter 1 Shawn McCann and Jamie Van Dam. In the squirt final the Exeter team came up against a Durham team and showed their true form that has them in first place They beat their opponents by a 1-0 score after displaying some excellent soccer. Congratulations to the kids and to coaches Jim Nixon and Andrew Winters on their suc- cess. Scorer for Exeter in the final game was Shawn McCann. Squirts good play continues In squirt action this week Exeter I travelled to play Nairn I. The Exeter team tried to take the play to the Nairn team early but the Nairn squad had their own thoughts on how this game should go and took over the momentum of the game and sent the Exeter team home with a 3-0 defeat. Exeter 1I continued its ex- cellent play totally dominating the game against . last place Bryanston in runn- ing up a 11-0 score. Goalscorers for Exeter II were Shawn McCann five, Benji Parker four, Jamie Van Dam and Scott Inson with their first of the season. Exeter III played Nairn II and both teams were well matched. The Majority of play took place in midfield with each team cleating only a few real scoring opportunities. It was disheartening for the Exeter team to see their ef- forts go to waste when Nairn scored in the final minutes of the game after it was award- ed a penalty shot for a handball. In'atom play Exeter II re- mained unbeaten in their last four games defeating second place Grand Bend by a 5-2 score. Things did not look too good at game time when coach Bill Dinney could only field 9 players and Grand Bend quickly took a 1-0 lead. But after five minutes of play six more players show- ed up and Exeter II never looked back after that. Led by goalie Jamie Rolphs excellent performance the Exeter team displayed the type of soccer it is capable of en route to a 5-2 win. Scoring for Exeter II were Dan Martens, two, Derek Beckett and Kevin Johns and Steve Farquhar. Exeter III received two more points and didn't even have to put on their soccer shoes. Lucan I did not show up. In mosquito action Exeter I1 and III went head to head at the Canners field with both teams playing some of their 'best soccer and when the smoke had cleared both teams settled for a 3-3 tie. Scoring for Exeter II Rob McLellan, three, for Exeter III Jamie Bedard, two and 11'im Van Dam. In pee wee action Exeter 1 and Exeter II met for the third time this season. In the previous contest both teams won one showing how evenly matched both teams are and every time they clash it makes for some excellent soccer. This game was no excep- tion. Exeter II started off strong, pressing the Exeter I goal on numerous occasions but it was Exeter I that came on the scoreboard first after an individual effort by Henri DeBruyn 1-0. But in the se- cond half Exeter II roared back and scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead and Exeter I1 just couldn't get back into it after that. Scoring for Exeter 11 Chris Haugh, Chris Chanyi and Chad Miller. All the Exeter teams are now entering the final two weeks of the season. The play of touranments have: been set: September 8 - Squirts in Nairn; September 8 - Mosquito in Lucan; September 15 - Pee Wee in I1- derton and Arva; September 15 - Atom in Exeter.
