Times Advocate, 1984-08-15, Page 18Pog• 18 TImes-Advocate, August 15, 1981 Tuckersmith taxes increase Tuckersmith Township council approved its 1984 budget of $2,114,838, up 5580 over the actual expenditures made in 1983. • A public school supporter in the township with an average assessment of $3,000, farm and residential, with no urban service charges, will this year pay taxes of $693, up $50 over 1983. A separate school sup- porter with the same assess- ment will pay taxes of 5691, up $45 over 1983. Expenditures in 1984 in- clude the County of Huron levy of $183,080, up from 5167,522 in 1983. The Huron County elementary school levy is set at $257,445, up from Buck & Doe Dianne Consitt and Dale Peck Sat., Aug. 18 For information 262-5432 last year's levy of 1238,763; and secondary school levy of $247,277, up from 5232,780; and the Huron -Perth County Roman Catholic Separate School Board levy of $46,990, up from $43,710 in 1983. Other expenditures in 1984 (with 1983 in brackets) are: general government $141,000 ($90,652); protection to per- sons and property, 560,888 ($87,178); roads 5392,800 ($445,217); sanitation and waste removal $66,349 ($40,103); day care at Vanastra, $124,344 ($117,157); recreation and community services, $187,655 ($85,040); building inspector, $6,053 ($5,689); financial charges such as bank charges, debt charges and taxes written off, $230,457 ($277,885) ; Egmond- ville water, $5,500 ($4,399); Brucefield water $5,000 ($4,476); Vanastra water $160,000 ($164,686). Tuckersmith Council ended 1983 with asurplus of $7,000, compared to a deficit of $60,000 in 1982, which was picked up during 1983. A research centre to study the effects of hydroponics and artificial lighting is to locate this fall at Vanastra. Mike Robertson of Pure Greens Ltd. of London has purchased a vacant three-storey apart- ment building on Lot 198, Registered Plan 131 for the research centre. Council will advertise its intentions to pass a bylaw changing the proper- ty from high density residen- tial to restricted industrial subject to approval of Huron County Council. Lettuce is to be grown in the third storey of the building which will have an air - inflated polyethylene bubble replacing part of the roof. Robertson stated that he is hoping to have over a thou- sand lettuce a week coming out of the building by November 1. Gold quill to McLean Service in the community weekly newspaper industry extending over 50 years was recognized when the Cana- dian Community Newspaper Association presented An- drew Y. McLean of Seaforth with the association's Gold Quill award. The presentation was made at the annual CCNA conven- tion held in Penticton, B.C. last week. Over 400 represen- tatives of community newspapers from across Canada attended. McLean was publisher of The Huron Expositor until the sale of the paper to Signal Star Publishing Ltd. of Goderich two years ago. He had been associated with the paper since finishing school in 1931. In making the presentation, William Pratt of the Tillson- burg News and CCNA ex- ecutive committee chairman, referred to McLean's long ac- tivity in the community in- volving politics, the hospital and Lions Park. He recalled that he was a past president and honorary life member of the CCNA and that he had been made a member of the Order of the British Empire. Nicholson has completed 14 courses at University of Guelph during the past years. Reeve Robert Bell presented the township pla- que to Bonnie Turner of RR 4 Seaforth; the young Tuckersmith student at Cen- tral Huron Secondary School at Clinton who won the Domi- nion essay contest sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion this year. Council gave first reading to a bylaw to designate the stone posts and gates at Lane E. at Vanastra as of architec- tural and historical value. The entrance is to be restored at an estimated cost of $2,000 with a grant from the Ontario Heritage Foundation to help cover costs. This is the former entrance to the Canadian Forces Base at Vanastra, however this entrance is clos- ed as it is deemed to be on a dangerous hill traffic -wise. Two requests for tile drainage loans were approv- ed for a total of $19,900. Passed for. payment were the following accounts: Day Care at Vanastra, $5,308.40; Vanastra recreation centre. $12,597.24; roads, $44,206.90; and general accounts $75,625.22 for a total of $137,737.76. The meeting was adjourned at midnight.
