years ago August 12, 1974
So many things have happened
Since you were called away,
And so many things to share with
you
Had you been left to stay.
So many times we've mentioned
you
So many times we've cried,
if love could have saved you
You never would have died.

It's sad to walk the road alone,

When the ways of life divide.
You gave me years of happiness
Then came sorrow and tears,
But you left me beautiful

Though tears in my eyes do not
always glisten,
And my face is not always sad,
There is never a night or morning

Food prices
show decline
Consumers paid less for the
OFA Food Basket in July than
in June. The retail price of the
46item Food Basket declined
by 47 cents to $50.35. The
farm -gate equivalent declin-
ed by four cents. As a result,
the farm retail spread for the
Food Basket decreased by 43
cents to $25.85.
Consumers paid less for
beef and cheese in July, but
faced increased pork prices.
The OFA Food Basket cost
consumers 6.6 percent or $3.10
more this month than one
year ago.
In July, farmers received
more for pork, while beef
prices declined. Over the past
year, the farm -gate
equivalent of the Food Basket
increased by 5.7 percent or
$1.33 while the farm to retail
spread increased by 7.4 per-
cent or $1.77.
For every $100 spent by
consumers on the 46 items in
the OFA Food Basket,
farmers received $48.66.
Here are the Food Basket
highlights:
- Retail beef prices declin-
ed by seven cents per pound
in July, while the farm -gate
equivalent declined by five
cents.
- Pork retail prices increas-
ed by three cents per pound.
The farm -gate equivalent
rose by seven cents per
pound.
- Poultry and egg prices re-
main unchanged this month
at both the retail and farm
level.
- The retail price of most
cheeses declined.
- Processed vegetables
were on special this month.
Lower prices were recorded
for baked beans, tomato
juice, french fries, and cann-
ed peas, tomatoes and green
beans. There was no change
at the farm -gate.
While most food baskets
calculate in store prices, the
OFA goes one step further. it
also shows changes in the On-
tario farmers' share of the
retail food dollar. Because of
problems in calculating the
farmers' share of processed
foods, and since some pro-
ducts are not grown in On-
tario, the Food Basket does
not include a complete range
of food products. it is
estimated that the OFA Food
Basket includes about 55 per-
cent of the weekly food pur-
chases of an average family
of four.
