The Ausable-Bayfield Con- servation Authority has notified all municipalities in the watershed that com- memorative white pine trees will be provided to those wishing one. In addition the Authority of- fered to plant the eight to 10 foot tree at a cost of $50 and for another $50 would arrange a commemorative ceremony and media coverage of same. Council finally opted for just the free tree and it will be left up to the. public works committee as to where it will Not free of sexism A United Church of Canada taskforce report says its own church is not free of the sex- ism that oppresses and ex- ploits women. In a report to be presented to the church's General Coun- cil in Morden, Manitoba, August 7-16, the taskforce says sexism is perpeturated through church traditions, policies, structures and theologies. It calls on the church to eradicate a "force in both church and society that undergirds long standing systems" of oppression. "If the church begins to take the issue of sexism seriously, it is essential for us to begin to have an understan- ding of the institutional nature of the church" the report, Changing Roles of Women and Men in Church and Socie- ty, says. We cannot be part of work- ing for just, creative and responsible change unless there is an understanding of the nature of the institution that needs changing." The report says the church encourages sexism by: - Assuming women will per- form similar work functions in the church as they do at home. - The peredominant use of male imagery and language for God. - The reluctance of local congregations to call ordain- ed women to be their mjnister.
