August 8, 1984 16.14 • Imes vacate Serving South Huron, North Middlesex & North tambton Since 1873 FrIedsburg Days are successful "Successful" That's the way chairman Tom Hayter described the 11th annual Friedsburg Days held in Dashwood on the weekend. Hayter said although atten- dance was possibly down a lit- tle from last year, profits to be used for community pro- jects should be about $4,000. He said the Friday night crowd was over 800 and more than 1,000 went though the turnstiles, Saturday. Friday's activities began with a grudge slo-pitch game between the Town and City Girls and the Dashwood Gamblers. The actual final score is a mystery, but, an- nouncer Bill "Ernie Harwell" Schade declared it a tie at 14-19. The 1989 Friedsburg Days Queen is Cheryl Dowson of Exeter who was sponsored by Julie's Hairstyling. Joanne Masse and Karen Schade were the runnersup. A long and colourful parade started Saturday's action. Becker and Son float was judged the best in the theme category. Second prize went to Eidelweis Acres. Dashwood senior citizens won the red ribbon in the ser- vice club classification and Hensall Co-op and Cook's were winners in the horse drawn vehicle division. Taking prizes in horse and rider were Sandra Ryan and Lisa Vandenburg, Rob McKnight and Jason Neeb were best with small vehicles and John Hayter Painting had the best novelty entry. Winning for the best decorated bicycles were Shelley Miller, Kim Haigle and Ryan and Jeff R.atz while 18 modth-old Janice Becker was the youngest participant. Competition was keen in the crosscut saw competition and attracted alot of attention. Lawrence Becker and Verne Sorensen combined to win the men's division in 14 seconds after a close battle with Frank Regier and Louis Dietrich. Elaine Datars and Angela Watson teamed up as the best ladies entry with a time of 53 seconds. The annual tug-of-war com- petition was bigger and better than ever with six men's and four female teams taking part. The Concession 14 Sod - busters defended their"cham- pionship status successfully outpulling Mount Carmel in the final. The Sodbusters won a similar championship in Thedford earlier in the day. The ladies final produced a long, hard pull with the Throw Togethers, a team assembled only an hour before the start .edging Mount Carmel. In arm wrestling, John Coolman was the overall champion. Other division win- ners were Alice Dietrich, Paul Ritchie, Rob Watson, Jack Forrester and Jim . Marrinan. The pet show attracted a large number of youngsters with their favourite animals. Winners for best groomed were Steve Arnold, Dave Maguire and Ann Walper, best in the unique category were Cecile Zimmer, Chad Arnold and Dwight Bierling and Chad Arnold, Jamie Hoff- man and Ian Thiel won for be- ing colourful. The best trained animals were shown by Ian Thiel, Steve Arnold and Ann Walper while the tiniest were Shan- non Boyle's frog, Chad Ar- nold's turtle and Dwight Bierling's kitten. Other successful Saturday events were a craft show, chain saw contest, bubble blowing and a horse show put on by the Exeter horse and pony club. Sunday events included a well attended breakfast and firemen games which were won by the Zurich volunteer department. A chain saw competition was held for the first time with each contestant being timed for three cuts. In the 0-34 cc category, Gord Brown, Grand Bend was the winner in 24.2 seconds with Scott MacGregor and Richard Brown, Grand Bend tied for second. Brian Argyle, Goderich won the 35-51 cc class in 14.6 seconds with Stuart Brown as runnerup and Brian Kipfer, Dashwood was best in the 52-66 cc in 2,5 seconds follow- ed by Ken McNee, Dungannon. Argyle was hack to claim Remember the saying "You don't hove anything if you don't have your health". Paul Watson, Dashwood won the 82-99 cc class in 37-.2 seconds followed by Ken McNee and Brian Kipfer took the open modified in 25.8 seconds with Whitey Denomme, Dashwood as runnerup. In the celebrities category, Ron Merner was the winner in 20.4 seconds. Next was village trustee Ken Rader.
