McCann assures us that the rates will remain exact- ly the same as a year ago. They are $?5 for re - registration of players and $45 for those signing up for the first time. In addition, the season will start earlier this year. Ice time will be provided at the Stephen township arena at Huron Park during the first week of September until ice is available at the South Huron Rec Centre. Girls will be more than welcome for the 1984-85 hockey program. McCann said three or four girls have already expressed interest in participating in the up- coming hockey programs. Lawn bowlers advance Congratulations are in order to three members of the Exeter lawn bowling club who have -advanced to the provincial finals in Colts triples. The Colts classification is open to bowlers over the age of 18 years who do not have more than five years of bowling experience anywhere in the province in- cluding the present season. The successful trio from the local lawn bowling club includes Sam Bower, Peter McFalls and Marshall Dearing. The Exeter bowlers won the District 4 championship with a win over Stratford and this past weekend in Seaforth they won the Zone A title and the right to ad- vance to the Ontario finals in Brampton on August 4. Should never give up As a staunch supporter of the Toronto Blue Jays we should know by this time that Yogi Berra was absolutely right When he said, "It's not over until it's over." Friday night the Blue Jays were playing a late game in Seattle and were trailing the Mariners 3-1 going into the top 01 the ninth inning and it looked as if a loss was in the offing for our favourites. So. at this point we decided to turn off the radio at nearly 1 a.m. and forget about the game. Well, by this time it's history. The Toronto club enjoyed its best inn- ing in the team's history with an 11 run outburst which resulted in a 12-7 victory. The momentum was probably caused by the ejection of manager Bobby Cox and coaches Jimmy Williams and Al Widmar. It's the first time that we can remember Widmar being tossed out of a game. He is the pitching coach and very seldom complains about anything. The Friday incidents started when Toronto pitcher Jimmy Key was accused of a balk. That's when Cox was thrown out. The next inning Williams who was the ac- ting manager and Widmar claimed Seattle pitcher Mike Stanton was doing the same thing and they were toss- ed Out. With the final ejections, first base coach Bill Smith moved to third and took over as the acting boss while batting instructor Cito Gaston went to the first base lines. As it turned out Gaston and Smith had the busiest time any coach could ever encounter as 16 Blue Jays went to the plate. They pounded out a triple, 10 singles and drew two walks. Almost the same thing happened in reverse Saturday night as Seattle scored eight runs in the eighth inning after the game was all even at a run apiece. Torrid paces The current paces being set by the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays are now really red hot. The Tigers with a continuance of their present record would end up with a total of 112 victories and should be a shoo-in - for the American league's eastern division title. 11 the Blue Jay's stay at their same pace they would end up with about 98 wins and many seasons that would Ix, enough to win a divisional pennant, but, not this year. It's almost sure that a winner in the western division will end up with somewhat less than 98 victories. Cur- rently at around 50 wins, at the same speed they would only gel about 85 in the win column. 'I'o find one of the reasons of the success of the Tigers this year, we need look no further than the bullpen. Mainly because of the effectiveness of Willie Her- nandez., Tiger relief pitchers have an exceptional record of 18 victories and only three losses plus 32 saves. These three marks are tops in the American League. in comparison, Blue Jays pitchers coming in on relief are all even at 14 wins and loses with only 20 saves. The one reason Luis heal olthe Jays is tied with Dave St i.eb for most pitching victories to date at 11 is that his mates score more wins for him. The Jays have scored 84 runs to help Leal to his 11 wins. Stieh has only received the support of 58 runs in the same number df victories. This week when the Jays meet the Kansas City Royals it will mark the first time that brothers Garth and Dave Jorg have played against each other in the major leagues. The .lore brothers have one thing in common. They dont get many bases on halls. Dave of the Royals has drawn only three walks in 107 at hats and Garth of the Jays has received the number of free tickets in 145 plate a (pearances. (lank is tops 1 tank Aaron. the top home run hitter in the big leagues has proved for the second time that he is the best in the world. in a home run hitting contest Saturday in Tokyo, Aaron beat .Japanese slugger Sadakaru Oh four to two. Each had a crack at 10 pitches. Aaron won a similar test by 10 to 9 when both players were still active in 1974. Oh ret ired in 1980 after 22 years with Yomiuri Giants at 86R home runs. Aaron now 50 years of age topped Babe. Ruth's record of 714 round trippers and retired with 755 homers to his credit. f e Teams from far and near 1. Royals lose first in OASA play Thursday, in Southwestern fastball action, the Exeter Royals faced the Lucan Irish for the third time this season and came away on the short end of a 5-0 score. The Irish scored two runs on two hits in the top of the first inning and this proved to be all the offence they need- ed as starting pitcher Ron Glenn shut down the Royais on three hits, two of which belonged to catcher Randy Kraut. Friday night in Ilderton, the Royals continued to have pro- blems scoring runs as they dropped a 4-3 decision. Star- ting pitcher Paul McKnight, who was making his first start of the season, sur- rendered a single run in the first inning and two runs in the third and allowed a total of only five hits over the first four innings. The Royals came to lite in the fifth inning for a single run and added two runs in the sixth to pull even at three. However. a lead off walk by relief pitcher, Brian Ilodgins in the bottom of the seventh proved disastrous as the run- ner eventually. came around to score the winning tally. Leading Exeter hitter was catcher Gary Skinner with a single and triple in three at bats. The Royals resumed their winning ways Sunday night in Lucan as they defeated the White Sox 5-3. Starting pit- cher Dan Heywood ran his season record to nine and two as he shut down the home town club on six hits while striking out six. Heywood also led the way at the plate with two hits in three trips and two runs scored. Barry Baynham scored two runs and Will Lamb the other. First baseman Brian Ilodgins chip- ped in with two hits. Sunday afternoon the Royals travelled to Fullarton, to open a best of three OASA elimination round series and came away on the short end of a 7-2 score. Fullarton broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth with two runs and added three more in the bottom of the eighth to salt away the vic- tory. Leading the Royals at the plate was Richard Schilbe with three hits while Barry Baynham added two. The next game in the series will be played Friday night in Minor hockey gets early start Exeter Minor Hockey Association announces that at least in the early going of the 1984-85 season minor hockey players will be living in the best of two worlds. The Exeter team put in an excellent performance but Goderich was just too good for them. Final score 4-0. Goderich became the even- tual A winner by beatin Kin- cardine on penalty shots after a 0-0 overtime tie. In B group action Exeter II was the surprise of the tour- nament by reaching the final by virtue of a 4-0 win over Ex- eter 3. The two previous games however had taken their toll on the young Exeter squad and the St. Marys team had little difficulty in defeating the Exeter team 4-0. If not for the heroics of goalie Jamie Rolph, the score would definitely have been higher. On behalf of the soccer club thanks are due to all those who made this tournament a success, but special thanks to those who put in 12 hour shifts in the food booth and to Kevin and Shari Pfaff the conveners for the day. Another busy week in soc- cer action this week with 10 Exeter teams seeing action in different games. In squirt action Exeter I was held scoreless for the se- cond game in a row losing decisively to Ilderton by a 7-0 score. Even a super perfor- mance by Julia Brand did not help the team. Scoring for Exeter were Todd McCann, four, and Jamie VanDam, two. Exeter 111 saw action against Lucan I1 and is still looking for its first win of the season after losing 3-0. In mosquito action Exeter 1 battled Lucan 1I to a 2-2 draw. Scoring for Exeter III were Jamie Bedard and Chris Gardner with two each and Todd McCann and Mark D'Arma, one each. Excellent play by Julia Merner and Giselle Charrette helped the Exeter cause. In pee wee action Exeter 1 dominated play in the first half against Grand Bend but could not convert any of their chances into goals. In the se- cond half the tide seemed to turn for the Exeter leam and, they took a 2-0 lead on goals by Henri Debruyn and Jason McFalls.
