Stewart clan celebrates
with 57th reunion
By ALICE DICKENS
Ailsa Craig
The 57th gathering of the
Stewarts took place at the
park at Poplar Hill, Saturday.
Irish president, Bill McHugh
took responsibility for the
weather which, by the way,
was the coldest July 7 in the
last 52 years. However, this
didn't dampen the spirits of
the Scots as we had the
enclosed pavilion for our
whopping smorgasbord of
delicacies, and were able to
relax to good Scottish music.
People came from Alberta,
U.S. and many Ontario
places.
After the dinner, a fun time
was had as special prizes
were given out. We were
pleased to give the
beautifully -embroidered tar-
tan cloth, done by Marion
Stewart, London, to the cou-
ple who came from the fur-
thest distance, Gordon and
Myrtle Caton, of Red Deer,
Alberta.
They had left home in May
and went to the east coast and
Newfoundland, then back by
Quebec to see the tall ships,
and ended up in Grand Bend,
from which point they visited
relatives in the area. Ralph
Jackson, who recently
celebrated his 90th birthday,
and has laid claim on the
prize for the c''lest person
present, relinquisaed his title
very gentlemanly to Marion
McIntosh this year..
A lovely homemade doll
made by Marion again, was
given to Crystal Marie
Burney, the youngest person
present, and the six-month old
secretary.
Elise Baird was lucky as
she had a birthday on our pic-
nic day. Twelve other special
1984 silver dollars in a small
tartan hag with a string in it,
were given to the babies born
in 1984. Everyone present
received a bicentennial
sticker, and a button to wear.
Some of the fun prizes went
to Ruth Hill for having a tape
measure in her purse, to
'Stewart Harrison for his corn-
puter, to Lyn Harrison for her
aspirins. etc. Each received a
silver dollar, or a trillium pin.
By 3 p.m. the sun was shin-
ing and a rigorous sports' ro-
gram took place, enginee, ed
by Heather and Geoff Ren-
nison. Winners in the
children's section were Court-
ney and Kevin Dickens,
Melissa and Mark Rennison,
Jennifer Sadler. Adult win-
ners were Gladys Dickens,
Alan Hill, Evelyn
McNaughton, Bruce Lawson,
Stewart and Lyle Harrison,
and Lyn and Mike Harrison.
The best guessers were
Barbara McMillan.
Blenheim. who knew the
watermelon must wiegh 13
pounds. and Mike Harrison
who is willing to share his jel-
ly beans with the U.S.
president.
The nominating report as
presented by Bessie and Ilugh
Baird for 1983 is as follows:
President - Stewart Norwood,
Dearbol- n. ,Michigan. Vice-
president - Mrs. Elizabeth
Black, I)on Mills, Ontario.
Secretary Treasurer - Mrs.
Evelyn McNaughton,
Parkhill. Lunch- Convener -
Mrs. Janet Lawson, Denfield.
Sports Convener - Cheryl and
Ian Burney, London.
Membership Convener -,Mrs.
Bessie Baird, Parkhill.
Nominating Committee - Er-
ma and Murray Gibbs,
Parkhill
The president, Bill
McHugh, thanked all those
who had made this year
another success, especially
the secretary for her ex-
cellent work; Ruth Hill, the
lunch convener; Ralph
Jackson, who brought his
gorgeous roses to adorn all
the tables; Heather and Geoff
for their sports, and others.
After a brief discussion, it
was decided to go back to our
usual date, July 13, 1985 at
Poplar Hill park.
Circle your calendar, and
we'll see you there.
