Paul Pooley college player of year
Paul Pooley hi being nam-
ed Intercollegiate hockey
player of the year for the
1983-84 season by The Hockey
News.
The announcement is being
made at noon today, Wednes-
day at the Sheraton Centre
Toronto.
Hockey News -editor-in-
chief Bob McKenzie told the
T -A Monday that Paul will
receive the Hockey News -
Bauer award which includes
3500 for the,
tharity of his
choice and a beautiful photo
engraved plaque.
Paul along with, twin
brother Perry has completed
three very successful years
with the Ohio State Buckeyes
in Columbus, Ohio.
The two boys, sons of Bob
•and Audrey Polley of Exeter
recently signed professional
contracts with the Winnipeg
Jets of the NHL.
Paul's record with the
Buckeyes is very impressive.

In league play
Express return with pair of wins
After a considerable
absence from the regular
- schedule of the Great Lakes
senior baseball league, the
Exeter Express swung back
into action with vengeance
this week with four games in
five days.
Wednesday, the Express
were defeated 7-2 in
Strathroy, Friday they down-
ed Walkerton 7-1 and Sunday
they slit a doubleheader with
the Clinton Colts. The visitors
won the first half 12-9 and the
Express came back to
squeeze out a 4-3 decision in
the nightcap.
In Wednesday's Toss to
Strathroy, the only Exeter
runs came in the late innings.
Dave Hunt doubled to lead off
the sixth inning and scored on
a sacrifice fly by Paul
Gilmour and a single from the
bat of Steve Pearce.
Ken Pinder walked to start
the Exeter seventh, moved to
second as Dave Atthill also
drew a pass and came across
the plate on Dave -Hunt's.

Pinder was the Express
hurler. He struck out six
Strathroy batters.
Against Walkerton, the Ex-
press spread their scoring
over six different innings.
They started in the second
when Paul Gilmour singled
and completed the bases on
similar hits delivered by
Steve Pearce and Dave
Bogart.
In the third, Dave Atthill
was safe on a fielder's choice
and was plated on Gilmour's
second straight single. Steve
Pearce notched the third Ex-
-press run in the fourth as he
walked and was chased
around the bases by Dave
Bogart's two bagger.
Perry Stover walked to
start the Exeter sixth and
scored as Steve Pearce doubl-
ed and Brian Mercer cracked
out a single.
The fifth run in single
fashion came in the seventh
when Gilmour doubled and
crossed the plate on a double
delivered by Kevin Hern.
The Express salted the
game away with a three run
outburst in the ninth on only
one hit, a single by Dave At-
thill. PaulGilmourstole home
from second as Perry Stover
walked.
Perry Stover went the
distance for the . Express
allowing four well scattered
hits while recording nine
strikeouts.
A five run rally in the top of
the seventh allowed the Clin-
ton Colts to grab Sunday's
first game by a score of 12-9
.although the Express rallied,
for a pair of runs in their last
turn at the plate.
While the Colts scored most
of their runs in the late inn-
ings, the Express started ear-
ly. They counted six times in
the first inning as Flowers the
Clinton pitcher allowed three
walks. Producing the runs
were doubled by Bob
McDonald and Brian Mercer
and a single from Doug
Fairbairn.
In the Exeter third, Dave
Bogart was safe on an error,
moved up on a Steve Pearce
sacrifice and home as Bob
McDonald singled.

The final two Exeter
markers came in the seventh
as Bogart and Pearce cross-
ed the plate without the aid of
a hit.

duties for the Express.
In Sunday's second game,
Brian Mercer singled and
scored on a similar hit by Jeff
Fuller in the bottom of the
sixth frame to give the Ex-
press a 4-3 win over the Colts.
After Clinton scored all
three game runs in the first
inning, the Express battled
back as Jeff Fuller singled
and scored on Perry Stover's
sacrifice in the third and
Kevin Hernand-Brian Mercer
tallied in the fourth to tie the
score. Four walks helped the
two run rally
Jeff Fuller was the starting
and winning pitcher for the
Express.He held the Colts
scoreless on four hits after the
three run first inning and
recorded five strikeouts.
After the unprecedented
cancellation of the June 17
Expert Motocross Nationals
at Hully Gully because of
heavy rain, the Canadian
Motorcycle Association has
f countered by awarding Hully
Gully the most prestigious
National in Canada; the finals
of the 125 and 250 Expert Na-
tionals on Monday,
September 3, the Labour Day
holiday weekend.
Marilynn Bastedo, general
manager of .the CMA, told
Hully Gully promoter Randy
Collins that due to the cir-
cumstances of the unfor-
tunate cancellation of their
Nationals first round, they
would be awarding the finals
to Hully Gully.
This finals round brings
together the highest placed
Expert Motocross racers in
Canada to determine their
standings in the 1984 series, as
well as awarding the coveted
number 1 through 10 plates.
The finals of the Expert Na-
tional Series will take place
starting at noon on Monday,
September 3, 1984, and will
end with the crowning of the
top National plate holders
after the races at 5:00 p.m., in

cancelled 1st' round with a
more important event, the
final round of the Canadian
National 'Expert Motocross
Championship.
Usborne girls
even record
The Usborne pee wee girls
have started the season on a
winning note. After defeating
Lucan Tuesday night, their
record stands at three wins
and three losses.
Besides Lucan and
Usborne, the league consists
of two Exeter teams, as well
as Hibbert, Crediton and -
Hensall.
The girls on the team are
Deanne Ballantyne, Susan
Coates, Sheila Dougall, An-
drea Francis, Lisa Grose,
Lisa Hendrick, Sherry
Kerslake, Denise Kints, Kel-
ly Manders, Carrie Oke,
Sheila Oke, Sheryl Oke, Lynn
Portinga, Tina Taylor, Tobi
Taylor, Traci Tryon and Ber-

As captain, Paul led his
team in scoring in his third
year at Columbus with 32
goals and 64 assists fora total
of 96 points in 41 games.
He was named to the all-
American team and runnerup
to John Casey for the Hobey
Baker Award and wiped out
all Ohio State careerscoring
records.
Paul and Perry will

on August 2. They recently
graduated from Ohio State as
honour students in accounting
and marketing.

McKenzie said the selection of
Paul Pooley was made by
himself and his editorial staff.
He added, "It vas not a vote.
We checked with our three
college reporters and a
number of coaches. A lot of
the work was done for us."
In addition to Paul Pooley's
award, McKenzie gave the T-
A permission to reveal names
of the other winners which
will be announced Wednesday
in Toronto.
As expected Wayne Gret-
zky is NHL player of the year.
Brian Murray of the
Washington Capitals is the
coach of the year.
The other two NHL awards
go to the Buffalo Sabres. They
are to general manager Scot-
ty Bowman as executive of
the year and goalie Tom Bar-
raso as the top rookie..
The minor league top ex-
ecutive is Tom Webster and
the best player is John Van
Biesbrouck. Both are from
the Tulsa Oilers of the central
hockey league.
The junior player of the
year is Mario Lemieux of
Laval, Quebec.
Lawn bowlers
host to visitors
The Exeter lawn bowling
club hosted a lawn bowling
tournament June 20 with
bowlers coming from London,
St. Marys, Goderich,
Lucknow, Seaforth, Clinton
and Exeter.
Excellent weather condi-
tions helped for good bowling.
Taking top honours was the
Melo. McFarlane rink from.
Goderich followed by the
Jack McDonald rink from ,
Lucknow. Lucknow.
Rinks from London took the
third, fourth and fifth posi-
tions. The J. Paton rink from
Elmwood. I:ondon won. the
consolation prize.
The next tournament, mix-
ed trebles, will be July 8 at
1:30 sponsored by Ellison
Travel. Come out and view an
afternoon of good bowling.
In regular jitney action for
the loco club Tuesdaynight,
Esther Rau was the winner
with a score of 30 and two
wins. Stan Roth was second at
28 and Stewart Miner and
Lorna Spencer were
deadlocked at 27 and Edna
Caldwell recorded a score of
25.
Thursday night, there was
a four way tie for first place.
