Darwin Semotiuk speaks
School athletes told to get involved
Student athletes were
honoured and parents and
coaches were thanked at the
annual SHDHS Athletic Ban-
quet Thursday.
Guest speaker, Darwin
Semotiuk who is the chair-
man of Inter -Collegiate
Athletics and former head
football coach at UWO, gave
inspirational advice to the
athletes.
In any endeavour Semotiuk
said the first step is to make
that very important decision
to get involved. "It's too easy
to say 'I don't want to: You
must make tht voluntary
decision to get involved".
Once that commitment has
been made he encouraged
athletes to stay with it as long
as they can answer the ques-
tion, "Why do I get involv-
ed?" With the answer "a per-
sonal feeling of satisfaction,
it's rewarding and I enjoy it."
Semotiuk -challenged
athletes to pursue excellence
in everything that they do
saying "Each ,person has a
different level of excellence.
Aspire to and achieve the
level you are capable. Don't
get hung-up on society's
definition of excellence. Make
realistic and achievable goals
and make the effort and extra
time to achieve excellence."
The former coach en-
couraged athletes to relish
their achievements if they've
worked hard for them, but he
warned not to rest on past
laurels. "Always evaluate
your attempt and set new,
higher goals."
The guest speaker ended up
naming the three main ingre-
dients for excellence: Pride,
confidence and enthusiam.
High school principal Bruce
Shaw also had a few words to
the athletes and especially
thanked the coaches for their
time.

Royals get
Irish revenge
The Exeter Royals gained a
measure of revenge Thursday
for their defeat in the seven
game semi-final playoff last
year as they defeated Lucan
Irish 5 to 2 in Southwestern
Fastball Association play.
The Irish opened the scor-
ing in the top of the first inn-
ing as Kevin Lightfoot singl-
ed and scored on a double by
Brian Noyes.
They increased their lead to
2-0 in the third inning when
Vic Capitano, who had earlier
singled, scored on a Paul
Wraith single.
The Royals took the lead in
the bottom •of the fourth. Will
Lamb led off with a single, ad-
vanced on an error, and
scored on a single by Barry
Baynham.
After a sacrifice bunt by
Randy Kraut, Baynham
scored on a single by Paul
McKnight who in turn scored
on a single by Jim Allison.
The Royals added two in-
'Osurance runs in the fifth as
Heywood and Baynham
scored.
Starting pitcher Dan
Heywood scored a strong
game for Exeter as he allow-
ed five hits while striking out
eleven.
Friday in the Sylvan tour-
nament the Royals got off on
the right foot by defeating the
Zurich Buckeyes 9 to 3. Brian
Hodgins pitched a strong
game as he allowed only four
hits while striking out six.
Saturday, the Royals
received an excellen4 pitching
performance from Dan
Heywood who shut out Poplar
Hill on two hits in a 3 to 0 vic-
tory. The hitting stars for Ex-
eter were Jeff Lindenfield
who crushed a two run homer
in the second inning and Dave
Prout who doubled and singl-
ed and drove in a run.
The Royals were to have
played again on Sunday
against either Godwich or
Bryanston but thece of
the tournament fell to the
-weather and will be com-
pleted June 30.
Next league action for the
Royals will be at home Thurs-
day against Nairn and they
will be off to Lucan Friday
night for a game against Lon-
don Parkway Sheet Metal in
the annual Irish Nine
Tournament.
The Mike Prendergast
Memorial Award which was
established by his parents
goes to a senior basketball
player who combines ex-
cellence in academics and
basketball. Last year's win-
ner. John McAllister
presented the $100 scholar-
ships to ,Faye Gaiser and
George Tomes.
For the second time in three
years the Kitchener -Waterloo
Board of Approved Officials
have presented the Mike
Moser memorial Scholarship
to a South Huron athlete.
Faye Gaiser received the
award for her superior abili-
ty and dedication in basket-
ball. The scholarship is in the
name of an all -Canadian U of
Waterloo player who died on
tour in the U.S.
