Block Parents organized
The red and white Block
Parent signs depicting a child
with hand securely clasped in
an adult hand will soon be ap-
pearing in the windows of
homes on Hensall streets.
Approximately 30 women
plus councillors Richard
Packham and Cecil Pepper
attended a meeting in Hensall
Public School on May 29 ar-
ranged
rranged by councillor Irene
Davis, who has been working
for some time to bring the
Block Parents organization to
the village.
Mrs. Davis had contacted
Eileen Miron and Lois God -
bolt, active Exeter Block
Parents, sent applications to
parents through the coopera-
tion of the public school, and
invited OPP Cpl. Dave -Wood-
ward, as well as Mrs. Godbolt
and Mrs. Miron, to the foun-
ding meeting.
Among those already pro-
mising support and financial
help are Hensall council, the
Hensall Kinsmen and the
Ladies Auxiliary of the Hen-
sall Legion.
Cpl. Woodward showed a
short film featuring an OPP
officer talking to a class of
school children titled "Say No
to a Stranger". The Exeter
women had brought along
another film which effective-
ly explained the purposes of
the Block Parent plan in a
way children could quickly
grasp by using an appealing
clown character and another
adult in schoolboy garb who
had to learn everything the
hard way.

by strangers, frightened by
animals, bullied by bigger
children, lost, or requiring
emergency attention for sud-
den injury or illness can find
refuge and assistance by
knocking on the door of any
home displaying the Block
Parent sign. The door is also
open to seniors in trouble.
The films tell children they
are not to use Block Parents
for frivitous reasons like ask-
ing for a snack or permission
to use the bathroom.
Retired people and grand-
parents, as well as parents of
school-age children, may
become block parents. As a
safety precaution, all applia-
tions are screened by the
police.
Once a person is accepted,
the Block Parent sign goes in
the window only when the
householder is inside. Block
parents are asked to remove
the sign when they go out, or
even if they are barbecuing in
the back yard and might not
hear the doorbell ring.
An election was held to
form the Ilensall Block
Parents. Anne Rose is
chairperson, Susan Campbell
is assistant chairperson, and
Karen Shirray was voted
secretary -treasurer.
The new organizaiton hopes
to begin operating before the
close of the school year, to
give the children a chance to
become familiar with the plan
immediately. Block Parents
'are on duty through the sum-
mer months too.
