Huron -Perth their placement
had been reversed with Ward
taking second place. He has
thrown over 14 metres and
feels with more practice on
his technique he should
qualify for OFSAA. The
muscular grade niner has the
strength to place in the re-
quired top 6 at Regionals.
Ward was also a WOSSA com-
petitor in long and triple
jump.
While Roger Ward is just
embarking on a promising
throwing career, grade thir-
teen athlete, Faye Gaiser is
competing in her final season.
She threw 31.87 m in the
discus only .6 m out of silver.
Gaiser has concentrated on
the discus this year, realizing
her potential after making it
to OFSAA last year.
The regionals are in
Chatham Friday and Satur-
day. Athletes will be striving
for the qualifying spots at OF -
LADIES START
The ladies golfing season
started at the Ironwood club
Wednesday as 26 members
braved cool temperatures to
participate.
Gail Murray required the
least number of putts, Carole
Taylor recorded the lowest
score and hidden score win-
ners were Helen Webber and
Kim Pinder. Lossy Fuller
won the door prize.
DRILLERS WIN
The Exeter Drillers of the
Ausable soccer league are off
to a good start with two vic-
tories and tie in their first
three outings.
Wayne Smith booted the on-
ly goal for the Drillers in a 1-1
draw with Nairn on May 6.
May 10, the Drillers
defeated Lucan by a score of
3-1 as Dorkeo Chansamone
fired two goals and Kanphan
Chansamone added a single.
Sunday, Allan Gaiser and
Cue Ho were the marksmen
as the Drillers edged Taxan-
dria 2-1.
SAA in Etobicoke on June 1
and 2.
Also at WOSSA Susan
McClure had a disappointing
finish to her high school track
career. She placed fifth and
is an alternate in the 400 m
and missed her 100 m hurdle
race. In a repeat of Huron
Perth she and Jacqui Cottrell
ran close in the 400 m to finish,
seventh and eighth
respectively.
Jacqui Cottrell's fifth place
in the 100 m puts her as an
alternate. She was also sixth
in the 400 m hurdles.
The senior girls 4x100 m
relay team of Susan McClure,
Alice Dietrich, Faye Gaiser
and Jacqui Cottrell are also
alternates with their WOSSA
fifth place. The girls' 4x400 m
team of McClure, Dietrich,
Cottrell and Irene Dietrich
were seventh.
Lee O'Rourke managed a
personal best inmidget long
jump to place fifth -and is an
alternate. She jumped 4.82 m.
O'Rourke also ran the 80 m
hurdles but stumbled on the
final hurdles. Barb Lawson's
hurdles and 100 m were of
good times.
Beth Sweeney is proving to
be a strong long distance run-
ner. The grade inner broke a
school record in the 3000 :n
with an 11.34 minute fifth
place finish. Sweeney is being
convinced to run cross coun-
try in the fall to bolster Ex-
eter's strong team instead of
continuing in basketball.
With South 'Huron's strong
distance training .program
several runner's qualified for
WOSSA. Running well in the
300 m were Shiela Regier,
Mary Lou Rundle and Mark
Johnston. One of the few
South Huron athletes brave
enough to compete in the 2000
m steeplechase, Glenn Durie
set a school record in the
grueling race.
A school record also fell to
Mark Johnston who ran the
800 m in 2:17 minutes. Irene
Dietrich and Jeanette Van
Esbroeck also competed in
the 800 m.
Paulette Rauthbauer was
seventh in midget high jump
with a leap of 1.45 m. Time
Easterbrook competed in
long jump and Andrea Pearce
threw the discus well.
Track and field is South
Huron's final sport. With its
windup the school will
recognize fine performances
at its annual Athletic Banquet
on June 14 at the Rec Centre.
