So treasure him God, in your garden of rest, For in this world, he was one of the best. Lovingly remembered every day by your family. 19' Revival Centre from Lucan Opening the morning ser- vice, Rick Thornton read a Psalm. Mrs. Charlene Hazeen accompanied herself on the piano as she sang A Brand New Touch. Rev. George Hazeen spoke from Acts 2:41-47. Rev. Ha- zeen asked why the church to- day is not the same as it was in the book of Acts. One reason is in • Acts ,1:21-22 stating that the church leaders had been with Jesus. If our leaders today would get back in touch with God, ask- ing God to help them to do what He is asking, then God would be blessing. When God unites people together, God's love will keep them together. United prayer will bring people to unity and strength. You bring peace to earth by introducing people to the Lord Jesus Christ. At close of the service, commu- nion was'served. Sunday evening was Cana- dian Bible Society night, with Lucan United Church joining '.with Lucan Revival Centre. Mr. Jim Robertson, president of the Lucan branch, showed the film, The Journey of Hope, filmed in Africa. The ,film started showing some 6f the splendid scenery, then native drummers and singers of Africa. Illiteracy is 70 percent of a population of 460 million in Africa. They also lack reading material. This makes them some of the poorest of people. The film showed a mother who, determined to learn to read, attended a literacy class. These literacy classes use the Bible Society's Good News Readers booklets printed in the language of the native people. Many adults are learning to read and write. Every Sunday morning these rural Africans come for prayers and praise using the Scriptures supplied by the Bi- ble Society in their native language. So many meetings are held under a tree, while some are held in a building, and homes. There is a great demand in all Africa for New Reader Scriptures. In Khartoum, on the Nile, when an adult learns to read and write, he is en- couraged to teach others. Upcoming events — May 30th is the annual Blossom Tea, 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Charlene Hazeen is to he guest speaker Special music by Mrs. Marlene Thornton. Craft will be by Mrs. Carmina Thom- son.' Many relatives and friends attended the Open House for Mrs. Ruby Reed, held in the Family Life Centre. The occa- sion was Mrs. Reed's 90th birthday. t So far, so good. I've manag- ed to fight offspring fever, 1 threw away the seed catalogue and I've been avoiding those racks of little packets of seeds with the beautiful pictures of delicious vegetables on them. I am not planting a garden this year. Of course, every summer I say that I won't plant a garden again next year, I really mean it. It's cheaper and easier to buy fresh vegetables at the road side stands and I'm just kidding myself when I say that I look after the garden for exercise. I can get more exercise throwing the ball for our dog Pepper to retrieve, which is what I end up doing when I go out to hoe the garden anyway. Also, there's the fact that the garden hasn't really produc- ed anything in the last four years. It really wasn't much of a garden. But I got busy and dug tip the sods, raked away the roots and had a couple of trailer loads of top soil brought in. Each year I dumped on a bag of NPK and went shopping for seeds. Now, I did have some suc- cess with leaf lettuce. But I have found that no matter how many times you wash the lettuce and pat it dry with paper towel (yards of paper towel) sand hides in the little crinkly leaves. I do'not like sandy salads - so from now on St. Patrick's youth plan St. Patrick's Church Sunday May 13 at the 11 a.m. Mass all first Com- municants will receive Holy Communion as an entire group. Mrs. McClure, grade two teacher and Father Finn have been assisting the mothers and fathers of these students in preparing for this Sacrament which will take .place on Mother's Day. St. Pat's young people plan to meet this Sunday to focus on the topic, "Can a person be a good Catholic and a Com- munist at the same time?" Everyone is welcome to attend. The recently published "Guidelines for Family Life Education" compiled by On- tario Bishops, will be presented by Father Mike Prieur at the Christian Renewal Centre at St. Peter's School on Wednesday even- , ings, May 9, 16 and 23. This is an excellent background for concerned parents. If in- terested call 432-6133 between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays. A seminar on "Violence - The Problem and Its Preven- tion" will be held Thursday May 17 at 8:00 p.m. and Fri- day May 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at King's College. Bishop Sherlock will in- troduce some outstanding ex- perts and the Honorable Gor- don Walker. Call 433-3491 fot more information. I'm buying head lettuce grown in the marsh: you don't find sand in it. My radish crop was ex- cellent, too. Too good, in fact. Every little radish in the row ripened at the same time. Last summer they reached their peak when I was spen- ding a week in Saskatchewan. By the time I arrived home the radishes had cracked and split. And what does one do with a huge radish crop anyway? At that time of year you can't give them away because everyone has their own source of radishes. And you can't save them - as far as I know, radishes don't freeze, can or pickle. In August my garden looked more like a flower bed with blossoms on the radishes that had gone to seed. My other crops only grew in miniature. The cobs on the sweet corn only grew about as long as your figure, and peo- ple thought I was growing a variety that was especially bred for pickled corn. My tomato plants produced tiny red buttons, and they weren't cherry tomatoes. The cucumbers . looked like gherkin pickles, while the zucchine resembled withered cucumbers. The pumpkins grew lovely flowers, but never produced a pumpkin. The carrots, too, just stayed in miniature size. A11 in all, the garden would have been perfect had I wanted to feed a group of leprechauns who were fond of radishes, but as it was, it cer- tainly didn't offer too much to two adults and one dog. (Pep- per will eat salad, provided it has creamy cucumber dress- ing oh it, but he balked at san- dy lettuce, too.) When, at the end of the year, I took in the harvest, and then added up my costs for seed, seedling plants and fertilizer, I figured out that one tiny tomato was worth about $4. That figure doesn't represent my labour - so the weeding, hoeing and hauling the garden hose was just for fun. About the only thing I can grow is marigolds - the flower bed usually does well. And oh yes, I can always manage an excellent crop of dandelions Party for Greg Parsons Fri., May 11 for more informa- tion call 262-3038 or 237-3441 WED. -THURSDAY LAST 2 DAYS FOR REYSTOKE TARZAN : M. — THE LEGEND OF — LORD OF THE APES STARTS FRIDAY, MAY 11 PRI. -SAT. 1.11:15 SUN; THURS.
