According to clerk- treltsurer Betty Oke, 50 ap- plications were received. Among the reasons Baker was chosen was the fact he is local, community -minded, and has a direct interest in the municipality. Baker has had direct ex- perience in municipal politics, having served on council for 16 years. Baker's previous employ- ment with Hyde Bros. Farm Equipment has given hirn knowledge and experience around machinery and equipment. Before assuming his new duties April 30, Baker said he was looking forward to his new job, and cjnsidered it a challenge. The possibility he may be a target for complaints from people wanting their snow cleared or their sidewalk repaired did not bother him. "People aren't hard to get - along with", he said. The board Teamed of the of- fer this week from group spokesman Martin Van Den Berg of RR 2 Goderich. Van Den Berg's offer came a month after trustees re- jected such a program for the Goderich school because it would be too expensive. There is no t''rencn immer- sion program in the Huron - Perth system, although a group of about 30 parents is hoping such a program can be started at St. Marys, which has 200 pupils. Van Den Berg explained Wednesday that while his group is "100 percent behind the school board," he felt it is important trustees be told how sincere parents are in their desire to have such a program. "It shows our wilingness to help the board if it needs help," he said. He said the offer still stands if the board decides it can accept the money after it further studies the matter, as it promised. , "We have made a commit- ment to the board," he said. John McCauley, acting education director, said the board is about to circulate a survey among Huron -Perth ratepayers to determine whether French instruction should be instituted in primary grades (it is now of- fered in Grades 4 to 8); whether a French immersion program should be offered at a centra: location in the system, and whether there is demand for all French - language instruction from francophones. That survey will soon be distributed, he said, and a series of public meetings will be held throughout Perth and Huron counties from May 7 to 17. He said he expects trustees will again consider French programs sometime in the fall.
