All year round competition
The success in the last couple of years in oldtlmers
hockey especially by the Exeter Molting Hawks and the
Zurich Has Beans. is spilling over into the summer
months.
Plans are being made for a slo-pitch ball league for
those who feel young and are at least 35 years of age.
Initial interest indicates at least a dozen teams'will be
ready when the area league swings into action in late
May.
Teems are expected from Exeter, Hensall, Zurich,
Dashwood, etc.
President of the new league is Phil Overholt of
Zurich. Jack Fuller is the secretary and Jim Pfaff will
handle the duties of treasurer. Both are members of the
Exeter Molting Hawks.
Bulldogs win it all
Belated congratulations to the Mt. Brydges
Bulldogs on winning the Ontario Hockey Association
Junior D championship after a hard fought final series
with the Grand Valley Harvesters.
While everyone in this area was pulling for the Ex-
eter Hawks to win the provincial title, the next best is
to have a team from the same league win it all and the
Bulldogs are from the southern division of the Western
Junior D league.
Molson Cup winners
Only two winners of the Molson Cup three star
awards of a year ago were back to regain their awards
as the 1983-84 regular season of Canadian telecasts
wound down.
Wayne Gretzky of Edmonton and Toronto Leaf Rick
Vaive gained the most points in the three star selections.
Gretzky was the winner in Edmonton for the fifth
straight year with the most points overall with 155.
Mark Messier was second with 95.
In Toronto, Vaive was tops with 75 points while
rookie goalie Allan Bester and Dan Daoust were tied
for second with 50 points. Bester won the $500 award
because of more first place votes. The,winner on each
team receives $1,000.
Guy Carbonneau picked up 75 points to lead the
Montreal Canadiens. Guy Lafleur who holds the record
of leading his team six times was second with 60 points.
Mats Naslund and Richard Sevigny each had 50.
There was real battle between two Winnipeg Jets
all season long. Laurie Boschman picked up 90 points,
five more than Dale Hawerchuk.
Roger Lemelin of the Calgary Flames was the on-
ly goalie to be a winner. He had little trouble beating
team-mate Kent Nilsson by 120 points to 65.
In Vancouver, Patrik Sundstrom came on strong
in the closing month .to get 100 points and catch Tony
Tanti who had led most of the way. Tanti finished with
80.
The winners a year ago in additon`to Gretzky and
Vaive were Lanny McDonald, Mario Tremblay, Dale
Hawerchuk and Thomas Gradin.
NHL crowds up
The final results are in and the just concluded Na-
tional Hockey League regular schedule drew the largest
crowds in the history of the league.
The 21 NHL teams drew a total attendance of
11,984,275. That's an increase of more than 430,000 fans
from a year ago. There are a couple of reasons for the
increase. The Calgary Flames moving to their new and
larger rink had attendance ligures increased by 380,000
and the great improvement of the Detroit Red Wings
enticed an extra 149,000 customers to the Joe Louis
arena.
While a couple of others clubs had smaller in-
creases the big disappointments and decreases in fan
support were recorded in Pittsburgh; Los Angeles and
New Jersey and despite a good year the Washington
Capitals were down by 30,000 fans.
The largest crowds were in Edmonton where the
Oilers attracted 40 sell-out crowds of 17,498. The New
York Rangers were second with 17,394 fans jamming
into Marson Square Gardens for every game.
Other teams enjoying capacity crowds for all 30
home games were the Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple
Leafs, Quebec Nordiques and New York Islanders.
While the Pittsburgh Penguins did have one sell-
out crowd, their overall average attendance was only
6,872. The next Io 'est was in Los Angeles at 10,495. The
Penguins averaged only 2,900 fans for their last 20
contests.
What a start!
Baseball fans in Detroit are already on the bawl -
wagon reviving memories of the 1968 World Series.
While it's a little early to order tickets for the fall
classic. Tiger fans have a right to be optimistic.
At the time of writing Sparky Anderson and his.
Tigers have an almost unbelievable record of 18 vic-
tories and only two losses in their first 20 outings. In the
early going, Anderson is getting better pitching perfor-
mances than he expected. Jack Morris has a no-hitter
and Dan Petry was within four outs Saturday of doing
the same thing.
In addition, the Tiger are getting base hits when
they count and first classsielding.
Our other favourite ball team, the Toronto Blue
Jays are also off and running with 13 wins and nine
losses. They are in second spot, six games back of the
Tigers.
The Tigers and Jays don't meet each other until
June 4 and then they play seven times in 10 days.
