Need to sell yourself in work market
"In today's job market, the
most important thing you
have to do is to sell yourself
- and I don't mean what
you're thinking," Bonnie
Reberg told a small but ap-
preciative group of Huron
County women attending the
"Women and Employment"
workshop in Exeter.
"If you can write a good
resume, you can get a good
job," she promised, then
outlined the various major
types of resumes and the ap-
plication of each. "There is no
such thing as an ideal
resume," she said. "Today,
each one must be written dif-
ferently tailored to fit the
needs of the employer.
Trained as a teacher when
"all you had to do was remain
upright and have stamina,"
Ms. Reberg is a strong ad-
vocate of career changes, and
of self-assessment and
research in seeking work.
"I quit teaching because I
had to spend too much of my
time being a cop," Ms.
Reberg explains. "Nobody

had ever told me that I'd have

didn't want absolute power
over people".
Pointing out that career -
hopping has lost much of the
stigma of formeryears, Ms.
Iceberg said that most of to-
day's graduates could expect
to make four or five major
changes of direction in a
lifetime, a phenomena reflec-
ting the changing lifestyles of
the 80's.
"We change - the world
changes. Try to do as much in
this. life as possible," Ms.
Reberg advised.'
Susan Wismer, the second
speaker in the program,
agrees that women need not
remain stuck in an un-
satisfactory job or career
throughout a lifetime, then
led the group in a discussion
of ways to create one's own
job.
Ms. Wismer stressed that
you should first identify the
reasons you want to work,
and, if they are valid, should
research the market. She
identified that the most com-
mon ways of creating work
are through self-employment,
co-ops, and non-profit
organizations.
She stressed that in order
for -a small business to
become a success, it must of-
fer a quality product to a
clearly identified market, and
warned that' the most com-
mon reasons for failure are
poor management and poor
financial planning.
-During the "Creative Job
Search" workshop in the mor-
ning, Bonnie Reberg led the
group through a solidly -
researched plan for suc-
cessful job -hunting, covering
such topics as . self-
assessment, researching the
market, the hidden job
market, interview strategy

In the afternoon, Ms.
Wismer asked the group to
outline a perfect job, then led
the group in a discussion of
ways to make this position a
reality.
Both counsellors agreed
that looking for work is.a hard
job and an enormous amount
of work, but that it can be a
challenging and rewarding
experience if done properly.
During the day, through
skilful counselling and gentle
humour, both facilitators
torged strong bonds %I/atm
the group, creating a best -of -
friends intimacy among the
women, most of whom attend-
ed the workshop because they
are dissatisified with their
present employment and are
seeking change.
