T -A photo Readers write Moms, dads are right in local miner hoeken: Dear Ross: We can't open a magazine anymore without finding an article on "what's_wrong with minor hockey." One blames the level of coaching, another poor refereeing, yet another pins the blame on insufficient ice time, etc. The list is endless. As a coach, I'd like to point out something very right and very good about minor hockey; Mom and Dad'! The demands on these precious people are many. There's the financial cost of registration, equipment, skate sharpening, travelling, admissions and arena meals. There's also the personal cost of lost Satur- days, late, cold or missed meals, hard arena benches, cold noses and toes and juggl- ed schedules. This past year has given me some very dear and touching moments, many mote than I could cover in this letter. I remember the father who at- tended and cheered one of our away games, even though his own son was hospitalized and not playing. When asked to help, on ice, in the early season training, I remember more than one adult for every child! . I could go on and on. The mothers who served as phone relay messengers, the mothers and fathers who wrestled other kids into skates and equipment, the moms and dads who offered but weren't called upon. My gratituded to them all. Dave Hewitt served as team manager. His children are still too young to be in- volved, but he was still always there. Al Quinn of Ex- eter Minor Hockey never fail- ed to support as completely, his son, Brian, was the best tyke referee on ice. My thanks to these people. Our recent tournament in Clinton was a prime example of the support that my team and I had all year. Moms, dads, brothers and sisters brought horns, noisemakes, banners, chants and cheers. To quoteoneof the team, "It sounds like a parade!" We went all the way to the A finals'and it was because of the team's great ability and the SUPPORT of their families. Last Monday night, I was called home. My mother had suffered a stroke and her con- dition was critical. Her condi- tion improved and I returned to Exeter feeling a lot of dif- ferent moods, mostly con- cern. I opened the T -A, read the thank -you on your sports page and felt many arms around me. If there ever was a perfect time for a situation that was it. God bless them all. I had decided part way through the season that it would be my last. It was my fourth year of tyke and I was tired. That decision went out the window in a dressing room when I hugged a boy who was off to Florida. I can't give them or their parents up. I'll be back next year. Ross, please print this let- ter. The parents' sacrifices are indeed noticed and much appreciated.
