Sherwoods in South Huron champfottshIp"-f1nt The final series in the South Huron intermediate hockey league between the Exeter Mohawks and Hensall Sher - woods is going right down to the wire. The Mohawks now lead the best -of -three series games to two with the sixth contest be- ing played last night, Tuesday in Hensall. If a seventh and deciding contest is necessary it will go tonight, Wednesday at South Huron Rec Centre at 8:30 p.m. Except for the first game which was won 12-4 by Hen- sall the balance of the tilts have been very close with three going into overtime before a winner was determined. The Sherwoods tied the series at two games apiece Thursday night in Hensall as they downed the Mohawks 8-7 in overtime. Exeter bounced back Sunday night to win 7-4 and take a one game lead in .their attempt to repeat as playoff champions. Bakers bags winner It was Bryan Baker's suc- cessful shot at 6:19 of over- time that gave the Sherwoods their 8-7 win Thursday night to square the series at two games apiece. Ken Varley and Jamie Caldwell assisted on the game ending score. In the first period the Mohawks scored three times while the Sherwoods replied with a pair. Tom Ryan opened the scor- ing for Exeter on an unassisted effort at 2:31 of the opening period and at 15:20 Brian Mercer made it 2-0 as he converted a pass from Matt Muller. Only eight seconds later, the Sherwoods hit the scoreboard for the first time as Rob Malone finished off a three-way passing effort with Ken Varley and Jamie Caldwell. With time running out in the first 20 minutes, Jeff Fuller registered for the Mohawks .on passes from Rick Funston and Tom Ryan and Jamie Caldwell replied for the Sher - woods on a play started by captain Dave Kinsman. Mark Cronyn was the Exeter marksman on a three-way combination with Matt Muller and Brian Mercer and Ken Varley was the Hensall sharpshooter on passes from Jamie Caldwell and Dave Kinsman. The Sherwoods came out flying in the third period and wept ahead 5-4 in the first three minutes on successful shots by Ken Varley and Scott Jesney. Assisting were Dave Kinsman, Jamie Caldwell and Bryan Baker. Next came the Mohawks turn to score two consecutive goals. Tom Ryan hit on passes from Jack Chipchase and Jeff fuller and Fuller tallied on a pass from captain WPC" Barry Baynham. Facing a one goal deficit and less than eight minutes to go, Jamie Caldwell fired to quick scores for the Sher - woods and they were again in front by a single goal. They defeated Goderich 4-1, beat Parkhill 2-0 and eliminated Watford by a score of 3-1. Goalgetters in the win over Goderich were Gavin Snell, Steve Stire, Marty de Bruyn and Mark Brintnell. In the third period, Hensall goals came on a solo dash by Bryan Baker and Terry Caldwell on a pass from Ken Varley.
