NOM ISO (519) 2352120 "limes -Advocate, March 14, 1984 Co -Op serves farmers The Hensall District Co - Operative with main office in Hensall and branches in Zurich, Brucefield and Seaforth continues to serve the needs of area farmers. Present Hensall manager Earl Wagner says the pur- pose of the co-operative which is farmer owned and operated is to serve the needs of the farmer. The Co -Op employs about 60 persons at the four loca- tions. At the Hensall office in addition to manager Earl Wagner are controller Brent Caslick, pperations manager Paul Ducharme, retail stores manager Larry Shapton, Tim Beard in charge of grain marketing and stores manager Greg Willert. The Co -Operative has grown considerably over the past number of years. Sales in 1983 totalled over $25 million with a net saving of $576,684. Highest recent sales were over $29 million in 1982 when net savings were $588,222. Headquarters of the Seaforth branch which joined the Hensall organization recently are being moved to the former Gay Lea property on Main Street in Seaforth by April 1 of this year. Grain elevators are located at the main branch in Hensall along with the availability of dry and fluid fertilizer, all petroleum products in- cluding propane, hardware and farm products in the retail store and grain marketing services. Custom grinding takes place at the Brucefield branch and in Zurich the lumber division and feed pro- duction is featured including renovation of the pellet feed mill. In the year 1936, a group of farmers in this area decided to establish a fertilizer mixing station in Hensall, beside the railroad track. After operating this mixing station for two years, a Co-operative Company was formed in 1939, with a charter under the name of South Huron Farmers Co -Operative. The first board of directors were: President Albert Hen- drick; Secretary, T.N. For- syth and Directors: E.B. Horner, James Wright, A.B. Bell, William Bell, John C. Bell and William Alexander. The profit and loss statement for that year shows total sales • of $17,251.77 and a net saving of $1,471.12. In 1946, the company was reorganized, and named the Hensall District Co-operative. The first board of this new organization were: President John Armstrong; Vice- president, Sam Hendrick; Directors: Harvey Taylor, Edison Forrest, William Alexander, E,B. Horner, and Secretary, Bert'Klopp. That year, the total sales were $69,738.45 and net savings of 85,598.33. 1948 was another important year with the purchase of the Zurich Flour and Feed Mill and the entry into petroleum products, In 1956, the Brucefield mill was purchased, and a new bulk fertilizer building was 1 erected in Hensall in 1969. The present modern feed mill at Zurich was officially opened in February 1962, and the E.L. Mickle and Son grain elevator was purchased in 1968. This move into grain handl- ing was a major step for Hen- sall Co-op, and created many problems and many satisfac- tions. The capacity at pur- chase time was 160,000 bushels. It now holds approx- imately 900,000 bushels. During the last five years, the board and management has had one main objective, to co-ordinate all Hensall facilities to one location. This has been accomplished with the official opening of the new store, offices and warehouse. John Paul Rau is president of the Hensall Co -Operative for the year 1984. William De - Jong is vice-president and John Campbell is secretary. Other directors are Harold Deichert, Ross McBeath, Glenn -Thiel, Michael Connol- ly, Peter Boersma, Andre Durand and Barry Taylor.
