Playoff time
It's the time of year again when the lower teams
in the four divisions of the National Hockey League bat-
tle for a playoff spot and most local hockey leagues are
winding down.
The Exeter Hawks with one of the impressive
records in the history of the junior D club are heading
into an OHA semi-final round.
The Hawks with only two losses in a 34 game
regular schedule are unbeaten in eight playoff games
having eliminated the Tavistock Braves and Lucan
Irish each in a minimum of four games.
At the time of writing, the next opponents for the
Hawks appear to be the Grand Valley Harvesters who
currently lead Arthur, three games to none. The fourth
game of their series was played last night, Tuesday in
Arthur.
Hawks manager Doc Campbell is hoping the first
game against Grand Valley will be played in Exeter on
Friday or Sunday night.
In theother semi-final round it will be the Mt.
Brydges Bulldogs against Delhi or Ayr. At last reports
Delhi was leading two games to 'one.
An Exeter -Grand Valley series should provide an
excellent brand of hockey. Both teams are well known
for their comeback routines in the third period.
About the last time, the Hawks failed to come back
with their third period heroics to win was against Grand
Valley in the Hawks annual tournament early in
January.
According to Campbell, the Hawks are a healthy
hockey club heading into the semi-finals. The Exeter
manager was a busy fullow during Friday's game in
Lucan which the Hawks won by a 7-4 score.
In the first period the Hawks were assessed four
penalties for using illegal sticks and Campbell made a
quick trip back to Exeter to get a new supply of lumber:
He was back before the second period started.
The Hawks have been getting great goal tending
from Pete Dearing and Dave Rook who have been alter-
nated by coach Bob Rowe. Having two top notch goalies
is a luxury for any coach and that's exactly what Bob
Rowe has.
All in all the Hawks have a well balanced club from
the goal out through a strong defensive corps including
good puck carriers Bill Glover and Kris Bedard to three
well balancedlorward lines. Captain Pete Tuckey was
the second highest scorer in the northern division.
Best of luck to the Hawks as they head down the
provincial playoff trail. Hopefully, Bob Rowe can join
Bob White and Ron Bogart as coaches of Ontario Junior
D champions.
More playoffs
The Exeter Mohawks with a similar record to the
Hawks are'heading into the South Huron finals attemp-
ting to. repeat as league champions.
The Mohawks, losers of only two games during the
regular season will likely meet the IlensallSherwoods
in the finals. The Sherwoods currently lead the Zurich
Buckeyes two games to none in the semi-finals.
Lots of tourneys
On the weekend, the South Huron,Rec Centre was
a busy spot with 36 games in the annual Lake Huron
zone minor houseleague tournament.
The competition was not only- exciting, but, also
close. Four of the nine final championship games were
decided in shootouts or by the number of shots on goal
in overtime.
The pee wee A final between two Exeter teams was
scoreless and nine players from each team were forc-
ed to participate in a shootout before Gaylan
Josephson's team won by a score of 3-2.
The weekend tourney.included tyke, atom, novice,
pee wee and bantam categories.
A bantam tourney goes this coming weekend at the
Rec Centre with A and B finals slated for Sunday
afternoon.
Ron Bogart's Midgets are doing very well in the
holiday Strathroy Minor Olympics with two wins in their
first three starts.
The Kinsmen Generals are back in action Thurs-
day at 9 -p.m. against the Kitchener Sabres. Friday they
meet the Kitchener Bruins at 8:00 a.m. and Sandwich
West at 5:30 p.m.
Relenting a little
Toronto Maple Leafs owner Harold Ballard has
relented slightly in allowing Toronto Globe and Mail
reporters back in the Maple Leaf Gardens press box on
a probationary basis.
1n a letter to sports editor Paul Pa largo Saturday,
Ballard said, "i want to stress this is for a probationary
period only. I know you media types like to rant and
rave about your rights. Well, we have our rights too.
I feel I have.the right to stand up to any individua1(si
who takes the liberty to launch a personal witch-hunt
against any Leaf player, staff or myself".
Ballard continued, "1 can accept any constructive
criticism and comments, but, the inaccuracies, outright
lies and personal vendettas held by some of your staff
will simply not be tolerated".
Ballard put a ban on press box entry for Globe and
Maii staff on January 17 after the NHL persuaded him
to -allow reporters William Iiouston and Al Strachan into
the dressing rooms.
Pa la ngo sa id Ballard's prolkrtionary decree will not
effect his papers coverage. Ile added, "We will continue
to pursue and publish stories alxtut the Maple Leafs as
we sec fit. We can't allow 1farold Ballard to sit in judge-
ment on our activities."

Hawks oust
The Exeter Hawks have ex-
tended their playoff winning
streak in the Ontario Hockey
Association Junior D western
grouping and have qualified
for the provincial semi-finals.
The Hawks downed the
Lucan Irish 8-3 Wednesday
night in Exeter and 7-4 in
Lucan Friday to sweep the
best -of -seven northern group
final in four straight games.
They ousted the Tavistock
Braves in a similar four con-
secutive games in the first
round of playoffs.
The Hawks now move
against the championship
team from the north. That
will likely be the Grand
Valley Harvesters. The
Grand Valley club with a
three games to none lead over
Arthur appear to be the next
opponents for the Hawks. The
fourth game of this series was
played in Arthur last night,
Wednesday.
Exeter manager Doc
Campbell said Monday heex-
pected the next series could
probablystart on the upcom-
ing weekend especially if
Grand Valley eliminates Ar-
thur in four straight.

Sherwoods close to
SH playoff finals
The Ilensall Sherwoods
have taken a commanding
two game lead over the
Zurich Buckeyes in the semi-
final round of playoffs in the
South Huron intermediate
hockey league.
Thursday in Hensall the
Sherwoods chalked up a 10-2
victory and in Zurich Sunday
they triumphed by a score of
6-3.
The third game in the best -
of -five series was played last
night, Tuesday in Hensall.
Further games if necessary
will be in Zurich Friday and
Hensall Sunday. The -winner
meets the Exeter Mohawks
for the league championship.
In the first game, the Sher -
woods jumped into a 5-2 first
period lead and were well on
their way to victory.
Ken Varley fired two first
period goals for Hensall.
Assisting were Bryan Baker
and Jamie Caldwell. Scott
Jesney converted a pass from
Fred Campbell; Terry
Caldwell hit on a pass from
Greg Campbell and Jamie
Caldwell registered on an
unassisted effort.
For the Buckeyes, the open-
ing scores came from the
sticks of Wayne Thiel and
Pete Gil with Travis Postill
and John Dawson assisting.
Terry Caldwell notched two
goals and Scott Jesney added
a single to take care of the se-
cond period scoring. Ricking
up assists were captain Dave
Kinsman, Greg Campbell and
Fred Campbell.
In the third period to com-
plete the Sherwoods scoring,
Scott Jesney completed what -
trick performance on an
unassisted effr rt and Jamie
Caldwell tallied on an
unassisted effort.
Start early again
Sunday night, the Sher -
woods again hit the
scoreboard early and had up-
ped -the score to 5-0 before the
Buckeyes hit for the first time
at 17 minutes of the second
period.
Jamie Caldwell fired the -
first three successful shots for
Hensall. Ken Varley picked
up two assists and Dave
Kinsman and Terry Cardwell
each helped on one score.
Terry Caldwell notched one
of the other two goals on a
solo dash and set up Varley
for the other.
Paul Overholt fired the first
goal for the Buckeyes on a
pass from Marvin Merner
with three minutes to go in the
middle frame.
The Buckeyes got a little
closer in the first five minutes
of the final session as Ken
Merner converted a pass
from Paul Overholt and Mar-
vin Merner scored on a pass
from Steve Languille.
The final Hensall score
came with 34 seconds remain-
ing as Dave Kinsman hit on a
play started by . Jamie
Caldwell.
The Buckeyes took eight of
the 15 penalties called by
referees Tom Millar and Ron
Shirran.
goalie Peter Dearing and
Bart Powell at the other end
faced 39 shots from the
Hawks.
Slow moving affair
The pace of Wednesday's
game in Exeter was slowed
considerably after the Hawks
had taken a 7-1 lead after the
first two periods of play.
The Irish were the first to
score at 11.43 of the opening
session as a shot by Rob Har-
dy bounced off Bill Glover's
glove and into the Exeter net.
Bob Thirlwall assisted.
It took the Hawks less than
two minutes to get even as
Mike Clark showed a lot of
hustle in grabbing a loose
puck at centre, beat one re-
maining defeneeman and hit
the net with a high shot.
The Hawks went ahead to
stay as Ed Willis dug the puck
from behind the Lucan net
and found Scott Brintnell
loose in front to score.
Willis did most of the work
and set the puck in front of the
Lucan goal late in the third
period and Rich Lather bang-
ed it home after a couple of
whacks at the puck.
Exeter goalie Dave Rook
came up with a great- stop
near the end of the first period
as Dave Egan deflected a shot
from Paul Wraith toward the
Exeter goal.
Mike Clark scored two
quick goals in 43 seconds ear-
ly in the second period to com-
plete a hat trick performance.
On the first Clark score Kris
Bedard lugged the puck most
of the way up the ice. Tony
Jones also assisted. On the se-
cond Clark broke in alone
from centre ice and made no
mistake to put his team up
5-1.
At 6.42 Scott Brintnell was
in the right place to deflect
home a shot by Kris Bedard
and just past the midway
mark, Bedard scored himself
as he took a pass from Ed
Willis and used Bill :lover as
a decoy and hit the Irish net.
The third period was only 35
seconds old when Jamie
Shipley counted the second
Irish score on passes from
Bob Thirlwall and Paul
Wraith.
The final Hawks marker
came at 6.39 as Steve Prout
scored on a screen shot with
Pete Tuckey assisting.
With less than two minutes
remaining, Bob 1 iriwall
fired the final Lucan : oal with
a blazing shot from . bout 35
feet out. Paul Wrai ' and
John Medd assisted.
Each team was assessed
nine penalties by referee
Steve Baker and the Hawks
outshot the Irish 38 to 32.
