Present farm dealer owners
in business for 27 years
Many things change con-
siderably in a period of 50
years, but, not for the only
farm machinery dealership in
Hensall.
Established in the • early
1930's by Howard and Jack
Hyde, the Hyde Brothers
dealership is still in existence
with the original line of Allis
Chalmers equipment.
The present building which
houses the farm dealership
has seen a number of addi-
tions and a few lines have
been added and the owners
have changed but not the ex-
cellence of service.
Operating the business for
the past 27 yeats have been
Jim Hyde and Bob Caldwell
and the firm has grown con-
siderably with employees
now ranging in number from
eight to 14 depending on the
time of year.
In addition to Allis
Chalmers the Hensall dealer-
ships now also handles full
lines of Versatile farm equip-
ment, Kinze planters and the
Hinicker brand of no -till and
ridge tilling equipment.
Allis Chalmers and Ver-
satile have each come out
recently with new series of
tractors.
According to Bob Caldwell,
Versatile is number one in
four wheel drive tractors
ranging in horsepower from
60 to 470. The Versatile trac-
tors and combines are now
computerized with mopitor4
ing systems. The combines
are able to monitor grain loss
and temperatures.
Kinze planters are
available for corn, soybeans
and white beans in four row to
24 row models with spacings
from 10 inches to 38 inches.
The Hinicker brand of ridge
tilling machinery lends to a
new concept in cultivation
and planting. Caldwell said
his firm has been closely in-
volved with the Huron Soil
and Crop Improvement
Association with their ideas
on no -till and ridge till with
several hundreds of acres
ready for use this spring.
The counties of Essex and
Kent are more advanced in
this typo of project with more
than 1,000 acres involved.
Caldwell continued, "This
method has tremendous
possibilities down the road.
Fall plowing is completely
eliminated. All that is
necessary is planting and
harvesting".
He added, "Ridge tilling
allows for better drainage and
less compaction. Our ex-
periments have shown crop
production or yields are
similar to existing methods
and costs are much lower. We
find savings could be as high
as $30 per acre."
"If this method of cultiva-
tion proves successful and I
think it will, we will certain-
ly cut our costs. It's a most
exciting aspect for farming in
the future," Caldwell added.
On the subject of- farm
machinery generally, Bob
Caldwell said, "Farm equip-
ment now available is the best
we have ever had in the 27
years Jim and I have been in
business regardless of who
the manufacturer is."

A methanol experiment
A joint government -
industry project to
demonstrate the use of
methanol as a transportation
fuel will receive a contribu-
tion of $103,312 through the
Canada/Ontario Conserva-
tion and Renewable Energy
Demonstration Agreement
(CREDA), Ministers for the
Governments of Canada and
Ontario announced this week.
Jean Chretien, Canada's
Minister of Energy; Philip
Andrewes, Ontario's Minister
of Energy; and James Snow,
Minister of Transportation
and Communications for the
province, announced support
for the project, which will cost
a total of $224,000 and involve
a fleet of 16 cars. The
demonstration project in-
volves Ford Canada and Shell
Canada Limited.
The 16 factory -modified
Ford Escort sedans will run
on a methanol fuel formula-
tion developed by Shell
Canada Limited. Methanol is
an excellent clean -burning
automotive fuel produced on
a large scale in Western
Canada from natural gas. It
has the potential to be produc-
ed from indigenous Ontario
feedstocks, such as lignite
and peat, and from renewable
resources, such as wood.
"Methanol is widely believ-
ed to be a viable alternative
to gasoline in Canada," Chre-
tien said. "Major efforts are
underway in California and
Europe to demonstrate and
commercialize methanol in
transportation. In Canada, in-
terest is kindled by the need
for long-term energy
security".
The demonstration fleet
will be divided between Ford
Canada and Shell Canada
Limited for a year and will be
tested in their day-to-day
operations.
Engine and oil analyses will
be made on a regular basis
and detailed fuel consumption
measurements will be taken
during the testing period.
"I am very pleased by this
co-operative venture. It is on-
ly through the active par-
ticipation of industry and
government together that we
find Canadian alternatives to
imported oil" , Andrewes said.
Snow said, "About half of
Ontario's crude oil consump-
tion is in the transportation
sector. Therefore, it is par-
ticularly important that we
develop transportation fuels
based on other Canadian
resources. Methanol holds
considerable promise in this
respect.
