Irish lead Seaforth
in juniorplayoff
The Lucan Irish have taken
a two games to one lead over
the Seaforth Centenaires in
the first round of playoffs in
the northern division of the
OHA Western Junior D
grouping.
After dropping a 10-8 deci-
sion in Lucan, Wednesday,
the Irish rebounded to win
two games on the road. They
won 5-3 Friday and 7-5 Mon-
day in Seaforth.
The fourth and fifth games
of the best -of -seven series go
in Lucan tonight, Wednesday
and Friday night.
The Irish played their last
two games of the Seaforth
series without the services of
one of their leading scorers
Lester Arts who suffered a
dislocated shoulder in the
opening game, Wednesday.
A four goal first period
allowed the Centenaires to
win the opening game 10-8 as
the two teams traded three
goals in each of the second
and third periods.
In the first period, Lester
Arts opened the Lucan scor-
ing by converting a' pass from
John Medd at 3:57 and with
only 22 seconds left in the
period Jamie Shipley scored
on a pass from captain Paul
Wraith.
Arts was back in the second
session with his second goal of
the night at 32 seconds with
Medd and Bob Thirlwall
assisting. Less than a minute
later Greg Smith hit the
Seaforth net with assists go-
ing to Lester Arts and Steve
Glenn.
The third second period
goal for the Irish came from
the stick of Steve Glenn with
Greg Smith and Paul Wraith
assisting.
In the third period, Steve
Glenn notched his second goal
of the game as he converted
a pass from Jamie Shipley.
Brent Bannerman was suc-
cessful on a three-way effort
with Mark Bannon and Brad
Hodgins and Wayne Urbshott
scored on a pass from John
Medd.
Jeff Pauli led the Seaforth
scoring attack with a four
goal effort. Greg Murray and
John Dale checked in with a
pair of goals and Dave Mur-
ray and Dave Mcllwain
scored in single fashion.
The three stars were Pauli
and Mcllwain of Seaforth and
Lester Arts of the Irish.
In Seaforth, Friday, the

John Medd shot the only
goal of the first period with
Todd Charlton and Jamie
Shipley assisting.
In the second, Paul Wraith
put the Irish ahead 2-0 on
passes from Wayne Urbshott
and Steve Glenn before John
Hicknell replied for Seaforth
on a power play in the last
minute of action. Dave McII-
wain assisted.
Three unanswered goals in
the first 15 minutes of the
third period clinched the Irish
victory.
Steve Glenn registered at
5:38 on passes from Mark
Bannon and Brent Banner-
man and eight minutes later,
Jamie Shipley finished off a
three-way combination with
Jeff Skinner and Bob
Thirlwall on a power play. Al
Craig completed the Lucan
scoring at 15:23 on a pais
from Wayne Urbshott.
Get early lead
In Seaforth, Monday, the
Irish jumped into a 8-1 lead
after two periods of play and
were then forced to hold on as
the Centenaires came roaring
back with five goals in the
third period to make the out-
come very close.
The Irish scored twice in
the opening session on suc-
cessful shots by -Dave Egan
and Brent Bannerman with Al
Craig, Wayne Urbshott, Todd
Charlton and Rob Hardy
assisting.
In the second 20 minutes of
play, Sohn Medd hit the
Seaforth net with a pair of
shots both on passes from
Paul Wraith and Jeff Skinner
helped on one.
Skinner was the top Irish
playmaker of the period as he
combined with Bob Thirlwall
on a goal by Jamie Shipley
and set Brad Hodgins up for
his goal.
The only scoring output for
Seaforth in the first 50
minutes of the game came on
a first period score by Dave
Murray.
Facing a 6-1 deficit past the
halfway mark of the final ses-
sion, the Centenaires came
alive as John Dale scored a
pair of goals and John
Hicknell, Dave Murray and
Murray Illman scored in
single fashion.
Al Craig scored the final
Lucan goal on play started by
Jamie Shipley and Bob
Thirlwall.
Bantams out
of playoffs
The Exeter Legion ban-
tams bowed out of O.M.H.A.
playdowns with three straight
losses to the strong St. Marys
squad.
In the opening game St.
Marys scored three goals in
the first period and were
never headed as they bomb-
ed the locals '8-1. Paul
Mellecke scored Exeter's on-
ly goal late in the game.
In game two in Exeter the

ing late in the game as he con-
verted a pass from Tom
Quinn.
In the final St. Marys again
showed little mercy as they
opened a 4-0 lead and then
coasted to a 12-3 win.
Exeter made the score
close in the second period
with two goals in less than a
minute. Mellecke scored on
an assist from Hannah and
John O'Connor tallied with
help from Moore and Dave
Russell. St. Marys then pull-
ed out of reach with three
goals in less than a minute.
Quinn scored Exeter's final
goal on assists from Shawn
Moore and Dave Russell.

Gregus shared the net -

had little chance against the

Molting Hawks win lakeport tourney
The Exeter Molting Hawks
won the Signal Star division
championship in the fifth an-
nual Goderich Old Old Sailors
oldtimers hockey
tournament.
In the championship game
Sunday' against the Utica,
Michigan oldtimers, the Ex-
eter club came up with a solid
team effort to win 3-2 in an ex-
citing contest.
The Molting Hawks opened
the scoring late in the first
period on a successful shot by
Frank Boyle with Bob Jones
and Walt Tiedeman assisting.
Utica came back to tie the
score with the only goal of the
second period.

Mohawks complete
great SH season
Although they lost the last
game of the regular South
Huron hockey league season,
the Exeter Mohawks record-
ed one of the best records in
the history of the league with
21 victories, two losses and
one tie.
Thursday night the
Mohawks were defeated 7-5
• by the Hensall Sherwoods
who finished in second place
in the five team league.
In the first round of league
playoffs, the defending cham-
pion Mohawks meet the
Parkhill Pirates in a best of
five semi-final series. -
The first game is in Exeter,
March 1 with the second back
in Parkhill on March 4 and the
third in Exeter, March 8. If
further games are necessary
they will be played in Parkhill
March 12 and Exeter March
15.
The Centralia College
Saints and the Zurich
Buckeyes are meeting in a
best -of -three series with the
winner meeting t e Hensall
Sherwoods in the other semi-
final set.
The Saints -Buckeyes series
goes February 27 at the
Zurich arena and February 29
in the Stephen township arena
with a third game if
necessary at the Stephen
arena on March 1.
Dave Kinsman's unassisted
empty net goal with 55
seconds left clinched Thurs-
day's victory for the Sher -
woods over the Mohawks.
The Exeter club took a 2-1
first period leadon goals by
Brian Mercer and Dave
• Jackson with Mark Cronyn
and Matt Muller assisting.
Ken Varley notched the only
first period Hensallscore on a
three-way passing effort with
Terry Caldwell and Jamie
Caldwell.
The Sherwoods came out
flying in the second period
and fired three straight goals.
Terry Caldwell scored two of
the goals. One came on a solo
dash and the other on passes
from Ken Varley and Jamie
Caldwell. On the other score
Randy Parker converted a
pass from Fred Campbell.
The only mid -period Exeter
goal came from the stick of
Brian Mercer with assists go- ,
ing to Dave Jackson and Matt
Muller.
In the first seven minutes of
the third period, the Sher -
woods increased their lead to
6-3 on successful shots by
Randy Parker on a three-way
effort with Fred Campbell
and Bob Malone and Jamie
Caldwell on a pass from Dave
Kinsman.
Brent Atthill narrowed the
gap to two goals at 14:38 for
the Mohawks on a play
started by .leff Fuller and Jim
Guenther. A minute and a
half later Matt Muller hit the
Hensall net on passes from
Brian Mercer and Mark
Cronyn and the Sherwoods
lead was down to a single
goal.
With the Mohawks utilizing
six forwards and an empty
net, Dave Kinsman assured
the Hensall win with his emp-
ty net score.

seconds into the final frame.
The first Chipchase goal
was produced by Keith
Ahrens and Jack Chipchase
while Mike Cushman provid-
ed the necessary pass for the
second.
The Michigan clpb cut the
Exeter lead to a single goal at
6.33 of the period, but, a
strong checking game and
good goal tending by Ken
Hyde preserved the Exeter
victory.
In an earlier Sunday game,
the Molting Hawks and St.
Clair Old Blues prayed to a
rare scoreless tie with both
goalies making standout
stops. This tie put the Hawks
into the final against Utica.
In the second game of the
tourney for the Hawks, Satur-
day they were edged 3-2 by
the same Utica team. This
time the Exeter club couldn't
make a 2-1 second period lead
stand up as Utica scored two
goals in the third without a
reply.
After Utica had taken an
early second period 1-0 lead,
the Hawks came flying back
and were ahead by the nine
Atoms, get.
win over Lucan
The Exeter atoms downed
Lucan 4-1 in regular
Shamrock league play and
dropped . a 6-2 decision in
OMHA playoff action this
week.
In the loss to Forest, Jason
Heywood and David Schwindt
were the Exeter marksmen.
Jason Hern assisted on both
goals and Heywood and Jim
Ahrens each picked up one
assist.
Jasoq Heywood paced the
Exeter scoring attack in the
victory over Lucan with two
goals and a pair of assists.
David Schwindt and Jason
Hern were the only local goal
getters. Jamie Cornish helped
set up two goals and Michael
Clay, David Schwindt and
Jason Hern each picked up
one assist.
The only Lucan goal came
from the stick of Todd Hyde
on an unassisted effort.

the Lakesides were able to get
past Ken Hyde in the Exeter
nets.
The Hawks roared back
with three goals in each of the
second and third periods. All
were unassisted and were
fired by Jim MacDonald,
Keith Ahrens and Bill Chip -
chase.
In the third period, Bob
McDonald hit the Forest net
on a solo dash, Bill Chipchase
converted a pass from Mike
Cushman and the two com-
bined to provide the passes
for a goal from the stick of
Keith Ahrens.

South Huron's girls
volleyball teams are today
for a spot in the Huron -
finals. The juniors play
at Stratford Central and the
seniors in St. Marys. Of the
two five team pools the top
three teams in each will
qualUy for the final tourna-
ment next Monday, February
V. As Huron -Perth is hosting
WOSSA the top three H -P
teams will play in the
Western Ontario
Championships.
South Huron juniors finish-
ed their league season in 3rd
spot. At last week's Clinton
tournament, the final league
match -up, the juniors split
with both Goderich and Strat-
ford Northwestern. The win
against the Stra tford Huskies
was quite a victory, as Nor-
thwestern is in first place.
Coach Pat Rowe has been
surprised by the talent that
Generals lose
to Ilderton club
The Exeter Kinsmen
Generals dropped a 6-4 deci-
sion to Ilderton in Shamrock
minor hockey league play,
Wednesday in Exeter.
Ilderton got off to a flying
start with a 5-2 first period
lead and went on to victory.
Generals coach Ron Bogart
said his team "Just couldn't
get going" in a very lack
lustre game. Missing from
the lineup were George Pratt,
Scott Lovie and Sean
Whiteford because of the flu
and Al Pym with an injury.
Brought up from the bantams
were Bryan Quinn, Paul
Mellecke and Tim Moore.
The Exeter scoring was
taken care of by Chris
Tiedeman on a three-way
passing combination with
Steve Gould and Terry
Lacher and Jeff Pfaff on an
unassisted effort.
Keith Heard and Mike
Thompson were best for Il-
derton with two goals apiece.
Scoring in single fashion were
captain Scott Lave and Dave
Murray.

has developed since the
beginning of the season. She
is optimistic of their playoff
chances but cautions that her
team is so inconsistent that it
will depend on the day.
The senior tea m finished a
lamentable fifth, which
places them in a pool with
Stratford Central, Madjll,
Seaforth and Mitchell.for to-
day's qualifier.
After splitting with
Goderich at last week's tour-
nament, South Huron lost
both games to Northwestern.
The teams' talent is com-
parable but South Huron let
too many balls just drop and
became flustered.
The seniors will have to
keep their pyschologlcal pro-
blems from affecting their
ability to play good volleyball
if they are to lengthen their
season.
