Greenway group enjoys team and sleigh ride sy ANNE WALPER The Willing Workers gathered at Stan Scott's shed on Sunday when Austin O'Neil took them for a ride with his team and sleigh. About forty enjoyed the ride and for many of them it was their first ride behind a team of horses. After this they went tobog- ganing for the rest of the afternoon. They returned to the church Sunday School rooms for hot dogs and hot - chocolate. Morley and Linda Eagleson spent Saturday evening with Doug and Cathy Walper. Harvey Eagleson is a pa- tient in University Hospital, London. Mr. and Mrs. Allan Hayter spent a few days at the Hilton hotel in Quebec where they at- tended the Canadian Limousin annual meeting. Susan Hayter was chosen the Limousin Queen of On- tario at the Holiday Inn at Guelph in January. After an interview with the judges she gave a speech on "The Limousin Breed of Cattle". She was also judged on her appearance and showmanship. She received a dozen yellow roses and a crown. During the year °she w ill attend all Asks farmers to pressure MPs With the possibility of a federal--election-looming_on_- the horizon, retiring OFA president Ralph Barrie urged local federation members to ply pressure to their MP. The Lanark County beef farmer has been covering the province ill the past week spreading the same message to 25,000 plus Ontario Federa- tion of Agriculture members. Barrie spoke to Huron federa- tion members February 2 in Clinton. The current political situa- tion - the federal Conser- vatives leading in the opinion polls and an election in the of- fing - make an ideal time for federation members to ac- tively lobby said Mr. Barrie. The provincial organization has, through research, prepared brief, which Mr. ;.1'1 Barrie said are available for use by the local federations. Three particular issues he emphasized were capital gains, changes to the Income tax Act and major im- provements to the Farm Credit Corporation. GRADUATES - Nancy Sharrow is pleased to an- nounce the graduation of her husband Paul, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Sharrow, Grand Bend. He received his diploma as a Child Care Worker from Fan- shawe College. Paul is presently employed in the Youth Guidance depart- ment at Youth for Christ in London. Barrie defended the provin- cial organization against criticism that it isn't aggressive enough in itslobby- ing strategy. The suggestion that farmers withhold their products for a day is not favored by the retiring president. "We don't have the clout to withhold our products. Not in reality. We only make up four percent of the population," said Barrie. Besides encouraging lobby- ing, Barrie apologized to the federation members for "jumping ship" between OFA elections. a sv S recently ap- pointed to a three-man beef commission established by Minister of griculture and Food Denniss Timbrell. "I'll feel good if we do something to make beef farm- ing better," Barrie said of the commission. He assured federation members that the commis- sion is not going into its task with any pre -conceived ideas of howto improve beef farm- ing in the province. Barrie said the commission will be travelling around the province getting feedback from beef producers and visiting other provinces to see how they market beef. Limousin sales and show in Ontario and all expenses will be paid. Congratulations to Susan on your achievement. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hodgins, of Granton held a birthday dinner for Miss Rona Hickey to celebrate her 90th birthday, Saturday. Car- man and Inez Woodburn were guests at the celebration. In the United Church, Sun- day, Rev. Peebles took for his message, "Filling the Vacuum". Following his message the Installation of Officers for the U.C.W. was held. The following were install- ed: past president Isabel Bullock, president Eloise Eagleson, secretary Ruby Isaac, and treasurer Jean Isaac. U.C.W. The U.C.W. held their February meeting at the home of the hostess, Mrs. Martha Eagleson. Anne Walper, in charge of the devotional, took "Love" as her theme. A prelude of piano music was played by Evelyn Curts and was follow- ed by the hymn, "Love Lifted Me" and prayer. The Scripture reading from St. Matthew, chapter 5, was given by Mabel Guenther. The theme was followed through with readings by Anne, and Doris Eagleson, beginning with "God's Love for Us," and ending with "A Few Words for Today". The business of the month was presided over jointly by the past and present presidents, and the date of our Strawberry Supper was , set for June 16th. A time of fellowship followed with a tas- ty lunch being served by the hostess. Times-Advocot•, February 8, 1984 Pogo 19 Female teachers meet in Strathroy The Middlesex Women Teachers' Association held a general membership meeting at the Strathroy Golf and Country Club, January 30. The meeting began with a social time during which old friendships were renewed and new contacts made. The guest speaker, Sue Hildreth, president of the Federation of Women Teachers' Association of On- tario, brought a very honest, factual and thought- provoking presentation on the pros and cons of an amalgamation of the separate Federations into one teachers' Federation. She had formerly toured Ontario promoting such a move, but completely revers- ed her stand after she had observed and experienced the results of total amalgamation which she, ironically, had suc- ceeded in promoting in Hamilton where she was a principal. It was a pleasure to listen to someone who has had personal, first-hand ex- perience with a particular issue from both perspectives. She strongly supported more co-operation between the Federations on many tem- porary issues but felt that women teachers, while shar- ing many common concerns with all teachers in general, also have specific needs and interests which are directly related to them (maternity leave, teaching of primary and junior children, affir- mative action, etc.) and are therefore best represented by their own separate Federa- tion which has represented them on all these issues at the government level in the past. The evening was a very worthwhile experience. Roil ■state Auction Salo On Saturday, February 11/84 at 1:00 p.m. sharp.
