Seed company growing
An area seed Compaq),
established in late 1982 con-
tinues to flourish and is com-
ing up with a number of new
lines.
Golden Harvest Seeds
originated by longtime Hen-
sall area feed and seed mill
employee Doug Mann is
located at the north end of Ex-
eter on Thames Road East in
the former Exeter Ford
Equipment building.
Golden Harvest are now
producing their own soybean
inoculant and working on a
liquid inoculant for the same
crop for the 1984 season.
Doug Mann says there is
now a real emphasis on soy-
beans in this area. He
estimates soybean acreages
jumped by 50 percent in 1983
and he expects a further in-
crease of 23 percent thisyear.
He goes on to say, "The
land around here is ideal for
soybeans and last year we
had many fields yielding 40
bushels per acre. This crop is
taking over from white beans,
corn and grain."
This year Golden Harvest
has new varieties of Leger
barley and Donald and
Woodstock oats. The above
varieties are also used in mix-
ed grain. On this subject
Mann adds, "These varieties
are going to be scarce, so I
urge farmers to order early."
Golden Harvest has a video
screen hooked up to the
Chicago board of trade and
Mann suggests farmers take
advantage of this service. He
continues, "More farmers
should take advantage of this
information and hedging of
1984 crops."
The Golden Harvest staff in
addition to president Doug
Mann includes his son Brad
who is in charge of sales, Ron
Squire with more than 20
years of experience in the
agricultural industry,
secretary Kim McCann and
Don Cole.
