One }ague tournament re- mai?ll`;, at Clinton February' 16, before the February 22 qualifying tournament for Huron -Perth. The Huron - Perth finals are two and a half weeks away on Monday February 27. Prior to the results of last nights' tournament at Norwell, South Ijuron's seniors had nine wins and three losses with the juniors standing at 10-2. Their league standings guarantee their spot in the top 10 of Huron - Perth who advance to the qualifying tournament. The teams must that day be in the top 3 by one of the two five team pools to qualify the Huron -Perth finals. The homecrowd at last Thursday's league tourna- ment saw both teams achieve victories fairly easily. -:, hey juniors started outo characteristically slow, re- bounding from a 12-4 deficit to defeat the Mitchell Blue Devils 15-12 and again 15-8. Darts at Legion All in the Family scored five points in Friday's regular play of the Exeter Legion Mixed dart league to move in- to a second place tie with the Itchy Niters at 62 points. Swat leads the league with 71 points. This week's scores were: All in the Family 5 Canscotts 0 Swat 4 Odd Ones 1 Snyde and Clyde 3 Trailers 2 Outlaws 3 Scotties 2 Shiphunters 3 Rowdy Ones 2 Crusaders 3 Merri Wraggs 2 Turtles 3 Makeups 2 Itchy Niters 3 Smurfs 2 Friday's schedule is as follows: 8 p.m. Smurfs vs Rowdy Ones Makeups vs All in the Family Merri Wraggs vs Odd Ones Scotties vs Snyde and Clyde 9:30 p.m. Trailers vs Itchy Niters - Canscotts vs Crusaders Shiphunters vs Outlaws Swat vs Turtles. Paulette Rauthbauer's effec- tive spiking was the key in the turnaround. Meeting Seaforth again, South Huron achieved 15-6 and 15-3 wins in what Coach Pat Rowe described as "bor- ing games." The serving of Maria ' Kochan heralded Seaforth's defeat. 'Coach Joe Fulop's seniors managed quite well, defeating Mitchell easily 15-5 and 15-10. having played 16 exhibition games against Seaforth, South Huron used its confidence to win 15-2 and save a close 16-14 game. Cheryl Dowson's serving scored inany points for the Panthers. The seniors have had the opportunity to rate themselves against non - Huron -Perth teams. Playing Westminster, who are leading their pool in London, Exeter won 7 of 8 games. The skills of the London team were not very impressive as South Huron had poor games, yet still won. Last weekend in Forest the seniors finished first in round robin play but lost in the finals to Sarnia St. Pat's. The team's only loss was to Forest in their first game. Warmed up South Huron defeated St. Clair, Mitchell, St. Pat's, St. Thomas, Parkside, Glencoe and SCITS. All members played well and filled in for two missing starters. South Huron needed 3 games to eliminate St. Clair from- the semi-finals. The number of games and a lack if confidence began to tell on the fatigued players. In round-robin South Huron had easily put down St. Pat's 15-8, but meeting them in the finals, South Huron buckled under pressure and defeated themselves, losing the cham- pionship 12-15 and 9-15. Both seniors and juniors travel to Glencoe this weekend. Yesterday's league tournament had South Huron matched against Listowel and the hosts from Palmerston. Molrnwk; g•f 2Otk wig The Exeter Mohawks have only lost one game so far this year in the South Huron in-' gue but they came te hockey close to a second defeat, Sunday. In their other start of the week, the Mohawks doubled the score 8-4 on the Hensali Sherwood; Thursday night. Game time is 8:15 p.m. The Braves trail the Irish by one point for the very im- portant second place in the standings. They have two games left to play. Bob Thirlwall's goal on a three-way effort with John Medd and Brad Hodgins late in the third period proved to be the winner in Tavistock, Monday night. The Irish were first to score in the game with two first period markers. Jeff Skinner hit the Braves net on passes from Wayne Urbshott and John Medd and the latter scored with 35 seconds re- p maining with Urbshott and Jamie Shipley providing the necessary passes. The grade 11 student at SHDHS played in singles, doubles and mixed. In singles play Arthur lost to the number one ranked girl in On- tario and again in a close con- solation match. Kendra says "I was no competition for her (No.1 ranked), she just wanted to get the game over with." Arthur had to request a partner as she was the sole South Huron Badminton Club representative. The match - ups are hasty and thus at a distinct disadvantage when matched against teams who have played together for years: With a 14 -year-old partner 'in mixed play, Arthur lost both matches; one to the se- cond best team in Ontario. After losing the first match Arthur and her doubles part- ner won a match but then lost again in the consolation finals. Arthur felt she played well and recognized that results would have been better if she had played more with her partners. The high school badminton season begins after the March break. The senior team has only two weeks of practice before Huron -Perth. One month is reserved for junior badminton. - Page 10 Timis -Advocate, February 8, 1984 Varley.
