Spotlight
By Ross Haugh
Quiet optimism appeared to be the attitude of the
seven members of the Toronto Blue Jays who were in
London Thursday on one of their final caravan stops.
Jays broadcaster Tom Cheek who was MC said the
caravan has now made the trip "around the horn in
Qanada". They were as far west as Vancouver in 1983
and this year were in the Atlantic provinces.
Success of the Blue Jays last year certainly made
a big difference in attendance at Thursday's caravan
in London. More than 100 media people attended. We
have been on hand in three previous years and the
largest crowd to date was about 50.
Manager Bobby Cox said he expected great com-
petition in the pitching department in spring training.
He indicated that Jim Clancy, Dave Stieb, Luis Leal,
Doyle Alexander and Jim Gott would likely be the five
starters with newcomers Dennis Lamp and Bryan Clark
sure things in the bull pen.
That only leaves three openings for pitchers. One
of those batting for one of the final three spots Jim
Acker said he welcomed the anticipated rivalry. Acker
added, "Competition will certainly make us a .better
team."
Acker is just back from playing winter ball in
Venezuela and is 15 pounds under his last year's play-
ing weight of 212. He blamed the loss of weight on the
difference in food.
Pitching coach Al Widmar said he has been in the
game for 43 years and feels his biggest find to date is
Jim Gott. That's great praise when you find out that
Widmar was coaching Fergie Jenkins when he broke
into baseball at the age of 17.
Widmar likened Gott to former Brooklyn Dodger
pitcher Rex Barney who had problems of wildness early
in his career. Branch Rickey once said "Barney would
be great if we moved the plate high and away.
Gott although he had only nine wins and 14 losses
last year, improved considerably in the central depart-
ment. He walked 68 batters in 176 innings during 1983
while striking out 121.
Jim Gott said he would like to become a regular
starter. He also feels the Blue Jays will be legitimate
contenders saying "Everybody in the Toronto organiza-
tion is positive people".
Bobby Cox is looking for five or six more wins in
1984 which would be 94 or 95 and this could be enough
to win the American League east pennant. A year ago
he thought 92 wins would have been enough.
Baltimore Orioles won a year ago with 96 victories
and they cannot be expected to be as hot again in the
last three weeks as they were in 1983.
In comparing the Blue Jays with the other eastern
teams Cox said, "Detroit has improved with the acquisi-
tion of Darrell Evans, but, I think we have strengthen-
ed more than any of the others."
The Blue Jays are confident Willie Aikens will be
a big help as the left handed hitting designated hitter
and hope he will be eligible to play early in the season.
Aikens who hit 23 home runs for Kansas City in 410
at bats should be a good balance to Cliff Johnson from
the right side. Johnson was up 407 times and hit 22 home
runs. In the runs batted in category Aikens had 72 and
Johnson .76.
In reply to a comment that Tigers manager Sparky
Anderson has named the Blue Jays as the team to beat,
Cox replied, "He's not theonly one. A year ago the Las
Vegas odds on us were 100-1 now we are listed at 10-1.
Detroit is 6-1.
We asked Al Widmar if the Jays had tried to get
Pete Rose. He answered, "No, he's not the type of
player we are looking for."
Tom Cheek said season tickets were going "like
gangbusters" and looked forward to breaking the two
million attendance mark this year. In 1983 crowds hit
1,930,915.
