in SH volleyball
The annual Madill
volleyball tournament was
another step on the stairs of
improvement for South
Huron's girls' volleyball
teams. Both senior and junior
teams ended an inconsistent
day of play with close losses
in the semi-finals.
In their third weekend tour-
nament the junior team
finished round robin play in
third place. In a streak of first
game losses and combacks
for the second game, SH split
with Goderich, Walkerton,
Sacred Heart and Wingham.
Walkerton was the eventual
tournament champions but
South Huron kept up several
good rallies. Seaforth gave
two games to South Huron
who in turn bowed to London
Clarke Road for two.
South Huron confronted the
Midgets and
Lucan in tie
The Exetl'r Kinsmen
Generals played to a 2-2 tie
with Lucan in their only start
this week in the Shamrock
hockey league.
The Generals with a record
of nine victories, nine defeats
and two ties in season play
start the, Ontario Minor
Hockey Association midget B
playdowns tonight, Wednes-
day against St. Marys. The
winner will advance to the
OMHA quarter -finals.
In the tie with Lucan, Tony
Zachar and Scott Lovie were
the Exeter marksmen on
passes provided by Jim Lewis
and Al Pym.
Lester Arts fired both suc-
cessful shots for Lucan with
assists going to Brent Banner-
man and Paul Foran.
Generals coach Ron Bogart
said his club played well,
"but, couldn't put the puck in-
to the net. That's been one of
our biggest drawbacks this
year. The Lucan goalie also
came up with some great
stops."
Houseleague
Exeter and Blyth played to
a 2-2 tie in a recent bantam
houseleague game.
Jeff Kints scored the first
Exeter goal on a pass from
Jeff Playfoot and Shawn For-
sythe notched the second with
assists going to Pat Hartman
and Sten We'
second place London Trojans
in the semi-final match.
Coach Pat Rowe's advice that
her team needs to move more
was neglected as the young
team stood by to give Clarke
Road a 15-0 victory.
Remembering their ability,
they forced the match to three
games with a 15.6 win. The
juniors chance for the finals
ended with a close 15-10 loss.
The experience of third -
year junior Andrea Pearce
has consistently bolstered the
talent of the rest of the young
crew. Karen Rowe, Julie
Russel and Paulette
Rauthbauer will develop into
competent starters.
In the position of defending
champions South Huron's
senior team failed to play the
skillful volleyball they are
capable of.
With insufficient time to
warm-up South Huron drop-
ped two games to Goderich.
Walkerton Sacred Heart was
easily disposed of but
Seaforth, whom South Huron
defeated five of six games last
week, grated on the morale of
SH to win both games. Split-
ting with Madill and Clarke
Road the seniors achieved the
final playoff spot.
Playing number one
Goderich, whom the Panthers
have not met in league action,
the Panthers let the first
game go 8-15 but recovered
their pep and enthusiasm to
win a second game 15-11.
Their positive mentality con-
tinued in the tie -breaking
game until their 8-2 lead -
reversed to a 9-15 defeat as
the players folded under
pressure causing a string of
errors.
The seniors have had little
competition opportunity but
occasionally at the Wingham
tournament they proved their
ability to play superb
volleyball if they play with the
right confident, positive
attitude.
Junior and senior teams
travelled to Stratford Nor-
thwestern last night for a tri -
meet with the Huskies and
Madill. The seniors play at St.
Marys tonight and host

SH cagers
beat Clinton
South Huron's Boys basket-
ball teams have been continu-
ing their busy schedule par-
ticipating in several games
and tournaments this week.
Thursday, the boys teams
met the Clinton team at South
Huron. Coach Terry
O'Rourke said that the games
were "must wins" for his
teams. The junior team did
just that crushing the Clinton
team with a 61-34 victory.
The senior boys duplicated
the juniors success winning
their match 75-52.
The senior boys kept busy
over the weekend travelling
to Arva for the Medway
Classic tournament. In their
first match, the seniors
emerged on top of a close
59-54 battle against Lucas, a
school from London.
The Panthers made it to the
semi-finals of the tourna-
ment. Here, in their second
game, they were defeated in
another close match. St. Pats
defeated the Seniors 64-53.
Coach O'Rourke is pleased
with the performance of his
teams. He says he finds that
the teams are currently in the
position that he originally felt
the team would achieve. He
believes that the teams are
playing quiteconsistently and
he is quite happy with their
current state.
Today, F.E. Madill meets
South Huron here in Exeter

midget and senior teams.
