South Huron All Star game set
The annual South Huron intermediate hockey
league all star game will be played at the Hensall arena
on Saturday, February 25.
The all star contest will pit the defending champion
Exeter Mohawks against the best of the other four
teams. They are the Zurich Buckeyes, Hensall Sher -
woods, Parkhill Pirates and Centralia College Saints.
Proceeds from the game will again go to charity.
In recent years, the South Huron Big Brothers and Big
Sisters Association were the big winners.
Dinner speakers set
Don Mousseau, chairman of the 1984 Exeter Lions
Club Sportsmen's Dinner tells us that the entire list of
speakers have been confirmed.
The late, t additions to the program are from across
the border. They are Detroit Lions linebacker Gary
Cobb and Detroit Tigers right handed pitcher Milt
Wilcox.
Wilcox recently signed with the Tigers a team he
has been with for a number of years after testing the
free agent market. 'Tiger officials are confident he will
lead them to the American league eastern division
championship.
The dinner, the 11th event of its' kind is scheduled
for the South Huron Rec Centre on Tuesday, February
7. All proceeds are split equally between the Ontario
Crippled Children's Society and the Thames Valley
Treatment Centre in London.
Headlining the speakers are two well known spor-
ting figures. They are Toronto coach Bob O'Billovich
who was successful in forging the Toronto footballers
into a Grey Cup championship team after many other
coaches including Leo Cahill and Willie Wood failed.
O'Billovich will be supported by American league
baseball umpire Marty Springstead. The latter is a con-
troversial umpire on the field and is better known for
his altercations with former Baltimore Oriole manager
Earl Weaver.
Springstead along with Ron Luciano holds the
record for the most times in tossing Weaver out of a
game. We think the magic number of thumbs Weaver
received from each of these two arbiters is seven.
Representing the female side of sports is all star
Canadian golfer Sandra Post, Susan Scherer, a member
of the Canadian 1983 ladies fastball championships and
gold medal cross country runner Linda Findley.
• Elmer Hohl who has won the Canadian and world's
horse shoe pitching championships more times than
most people can remember will be here along with
recently retired London Free Press sports writer Harry
Eisen.
Eisen is well known for his covering of horse rac-
ing for almost 40 years and will be bringing a harness
driver and trainer with him.
The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to send right
handed pitcher Jim Gott and Jeff Arp will be in from
the Hamilton Tiger Cats. Arp is a football graduate
from the University of Western Ontario.
One of the most important persons attending the
dinner will be the local Timmy and that's whatt the din-
ner is really about, the support of crippled children.
This year's Timmy is Troy Whyte of Huron Park
and we know he will be an excellent representative of
those children who are not as fortunate as most of us.
Roses and Lamps
The Canadian professional baseball scene should
be much more desirable this summer due to the sign-
ing of players by the Toronto Blue Jays and the Mon-
treal Expos.
Many Expo fans hope their club will come up smell-
ing like roses for the 1984 National league season due
to the signing of veteran Pete Rose.
Although he is 45 years of age, the well known hus-
tle of Rose who is better known as Charley Hustle should
inspire the rest of the Montreal players who have not
appeared to have played up to their potential.
Where manager Bill Virdon decides to play Rose
is a good question. We doubt if Rose is physically able
to play every day. He will likely be used in left field or
first base in addition to pinch hitting roles.
He is only some 200 hits away from tying Ty Cobb's
major league record of 4,419 hits in a lifetime in the big
leagues.
The chances of the Toronto Blue Jays to do as well
or better than they did a year ago were enlightened con-
siderably two weeks ago when general manager Was
able to sign Dennis Lamp as a free agent.
Thismarks the first time the Jays have gone in to
the free agent market with a bundle of big money. They
were going true to form. When the team was establish-
ed officials said they would not go after expensive
players until their farm system was productive and the
thoughts of a pennant contender were not just pipe
dreams.
Dennis Lamp who had a good record last year with
the Chicago White Sox and with lefty Bryan Clark who
was acquired from the Seattle mariners for Barry Bon-
nell should considerably bolster the Blue Jays bullpen
corps.
The Toronto Blue Jays caravan will be in London
tomorrow, Thursday and we hope to be there to keep
up to date on the hopes and expectations of the team
for the 1984 season.
With the signing of Lamp, a number of Toronto
sports writers went wild with puns and plays on words
regarding the new pitcher.
Here are a few of our own. Lamp short circuits
Yankee rally. Lamp lights up Jays pennant hopes.
Lamp is Toronto's leading Iight.Sock-et to'em Dennis.
Lucas, Seaforth take titles in rec tournament at Hensall
Lucan and Seaforth won the
two championships in the
weekend rec hockey league
tournament held at the Hen-
sall arena.
The Lucan club took the A
title with three straight vic-
tories. They defeated
Goderich 8-3 in the champion-
ship contest after swamping
Seaforth 12-1 and edging Il-
derton 8.4 in an excellent
semi-final contest.
After losing their opener to
Lucan, Seaforth bounced
back to down Monkton 12-2
and edged the Hensall Whites
6-4 in the B final.
The Hensall team lost 7-4 to
Goderich in the first game
and then came roaring back
to beat Zubyk's of London 6-5
and the Bluewater Lakers 7-4
before losing to Seaforth in
the final.
Rick Freeman scored two
goals to lead Lucan to the
final 8-3 victory over
Goderich. Scoring one goal
apiece were Rick Abel, Cec
Nickles, Gord Moon, Brad
Taylor, Brian Noyes and Dan

Hawks continue to roll alon
The Exeter Hawks rolled to
'two decisive wins over the
Thedford' Browns this
weekend as the northern divi-
sion champs show no signs of -
merely coasting through the
balance of the season.
With individual records at
stake and a chance to
establish the best record ever
for a local junior squad, the
Hawks bombed the Browns
13-3 at the rec centre, Friday,
and then battled their way to
a 7-3 win in Thedford, Sunday.
League scoring leader Pete
Tuckey picked up two goals
and five assists in the two
games as the locals ran their
season record to 23-2-2.
Meanwhile, the other four
teams continue their close
fight for the remaining three
playoff positions. Lucan and
Tavistock each won once to
hold second and third respec-
tively with the Irish one point
in front. The Braves,
however, have two games in
hand.
Both Seaforth and Thedford
failed to pick up a win and are
separated by only two points.
The Browns appear to be in
the most difficulty as they
have only five games left and
Dart teams
score five
The Rowdy Ones and the
Turtles were the only Exeter
Legion dart teams to sweep to
five points in Friday's regular
league play.
This week's scores were:

Itchy Niters 4 Makeups 1.
All in the Family 4 Shiphunters 1,
Merri Wraggs 4 Outlaws 1,

Friday's schedule is as
follows:

two of those are with the
Hawks.
Seaforth also have two
games with the Hawks, in-
cluding one last night in
Seaforth.
- Friday night, the Hawks
come home to play Belmont
and will be out to beat the
Bombers and establish a
record for the Hawks in
sweeping the home -and -home
series with each of the
southern division teams:
The Hawks will also be at
home on Sunday to the
Centenaires and then finish
their six -game set with the
Lucan Irish on Wednesday.
Horner gets hot
There was good and bad
news for the Hawks in their
13-3 win over ,the Browns on
Friday. Right winger Brian
Horner returned to his scor-
ing ways with five goals.
The former Clinton Junior
"C" player has been hobbled
by a knee injury for several
games and his return to form
is welcome as playoff time
nears. •
On the other side of the
ledger, the locals lost the ser-
vices of Scott Brintnell with a
separated shoulder and he'll
be out of action for some time.
Stever Prout has a bad knee
but shouldn't miss more than
one or two games.
The Hawks peppered 51
shots at Thedford netminder
Randy Thompson as they
completely dominated the
game. Dave Rook had 27
-4shots aimed in his direction.
Two of the three goals against
him came on powerplays as
the locals sat out 11 of the 17
penalties called.
Bill Glover scored a pair of
tallies and singles came off
the sticks of Ed Willis, Mike
Clark, Jeff Rowe, Kris
Bedard, Rick Lindenfield and
Rich Lather.
Tuckey's five assists were
followed by three from
Bedard and two each from
George Tomes and Steve Bat-
ten. Notching singles were
Lather, Lindenfield, Kirk,
Rowe, Prout, Horner and
Willis.
Penalties galore
The Hawks and Browns
hooked up in a real slug4st
on Sunday as the locals
prevailed 7-3.
The Hawks started the
game with 12 skaters and lost
Mike Clark and Jeff Rowe for
fighting majors as they tangl-
ed with the Cloud brothers.
Clark left in the first with
Brad Cloud and Rowe was
banished in the third with Bev
Cloud.
Aftera 1-1 first period, Ex-
eter took control with four se-
cond period goals to two by
the hosts and then added two
unanswered tallies in the
third.
Rich Lather, who sparkled
with his nifty stick work,
scored twice and added two
assists. Tuckey also notched
a pair and singles were fired
by Willis, Glover and
Lindenfield.
Willis recorded three
assists, Kirk had a pair and
singles came from Horner
and Bedard.
Pete Dearing turned aside
27 shots to get the win bet-
ween the pipes, while the
Hawks had 38 shots at Brad
Milner.
Exeter had 21 of the 35
penalties.
over Ilderton. Scoring in
single fashion were Brad
England, Brian Noyes, Doug
Latta and Dan Marshall.

Ilderton were Tom Trevail.

son and Ed Robb.
In the win over Seaforth,
Paul Medd was tops for
Lucan with a four goal effort.

were Cec Nickles, Rick
Freeman and Brad England
