The vacancy on Zurich
cotilkil has been filled without
the need of an election. When
only one set of nomination
papers had been filed by 5:00
p.m. on January 12, Ray
McKinnon was acclaimed to
office as one of tour village
councillors.
McKinnon, who has served
two previous one-year terms
on council before tenure was
extended to three years, said
he will take his seat on coun-
cil with no preconceived no-
tions other than an intention
to use common sense in ad-
ministering the business of
the municipality.
McKinnon will be officially
sworn in when regular clerk -
treasurer Sharon Baker
reassumes her duties after a
temporary absence.

Mrs. Arletta Hess celebrated
her 90th birthday at the
Bluewater Rest Home.
Messages of congratulations
were received from Premier
Bill Davis and Prime
Minister Pierre Trudeau.
Visitors present for the joyous
occasion were her son Ivan
Willert, Ladysmith, B.C.,
daughter-in-law Mrs. Ann
Willert, Zurich, grand-
children June and Doug
McEachern, London, Judy
and John McDonald, Melvin -
dale Michigan, Greg and
Agnes Willert, Louis Willert,
Zurich and great-grand-
children Douglas, Dennis and
Damion Willert, Zurich.
Other visitors were Mr. and
Mrs. Ward Kraft, Edna
Koehler, Dashwood, Rev.
Donna Kyllonen, Mr. and
Mrs. Arnold Merner, Irene
Steinbach, Margaret Hess,
Gertie Fleischauer, Ed
Gascho, Mike and Gen Doyle,
Annie Finkbeiner and Ina
Neeb, all of Zurich.
Everyone gathered around
Mrs. Hess and sang Happy
Birthday before Mrs. Hess
blew the candles out on her
cake. Everyone was then
served Birthday cake and cof-
fee. Mrs. Hess thanked
everyone for the gifts and
cards she received.
St. Boniface Parish Dance
will be held on February 4 at
the Zurich Community Centre
with Mozart and the Melody
Makers. Everyone welcome.

Maplewoods
The January birthday par-
ty at Maplewoods began with
a dessert of cake and ice
cream at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Risi
showed two reels of pictures
which were very much
enjoyed.
Meda O'Brien dealt with
the business. This was follow-
ed by games of cards and
crokinole.
Birthday celebrants for
January were, Laura Gascho,
Madeline Gelinas, Ervin
Eckstein, Oonnie Lewis and
Victor Dinnin. Guests for the
evening were Marie and
Mozart Gelinas. This was also
Marie's birthday. Hostesses
for the evening were Connie
Lewis and Beatrice Rader.
FLYING FATHER - Father Paul Mooney laced on his skates and joined the children
on the ice when grades one, two and three at St. Boniface went skating. He was
joined by Elizabeth Groot (centre) and Michelle Ducharme.

We are certainly in the
midst of a deep freeze, but
with the days becoming
noticeably longer and sun-
nier, perhaps there is still
some light at the end of the
tunnel.
Movies were started again
on Monday evening. We are
indebted to the Ladies Aux-
iliary for anew movie projec-
tor which should ensure
trouble-free operation for a
few years.
The January birthday par-
ty was held on Tuesday even-
ing sponsored by the St.
Peter's Lutheran Church
ladies, Zurich. The program
started with a hymn sing,
followed by an organ solo by
Richard Gingerich. Jason and
Cbrisfa Schilbe sang a duet,
and Christa gave a reading.
Little Kelly Roffman sang a
solo and Christine Schade
played a piano solo. Eight
members of the Auxiliary
staged a birthday hat show.
Following the program,
refreshments were served.
