In the first stage of the
three-part "Time to Quit"
program, smokers learn what
situations trigger their urge to
smoke and how to cope with
these urges.
The second stage of "Time
to Quit" helps smokers
prepare to quit by practising
coping activities and to decide
if they will quit smoking sud-
denly or gradually.
The third stage identifies
physical and psychological
reactions to quitting and ex-
plains how to deal with these
effects.
According to the 1981 edi-
tion of "Smoking Behaviour
of Canadians", regular '
cigarette smokers comprise
about 35 percent of Ontario's
25 to 44 year old population. In
the past 37 percent of these
smokers tried to stop smok-
ing. In order to try to increase
the success rate, the Cana-
dian Cancer Society and
Health and Welfare Canada
developed "Time to Quit".

The entire energy conser-
vation program for the coun-
ty will involve more than the
consuting firm's study. The
entire cost is more. in the
neighborhood of $50,000.
The province, through the
Ministry of Municipal Affairs
and Housing will be picking
up 75 percent of the cost up to
a maximum of $35,000. David-
son said that would cover the
cost of the actual study, with
the remaining $5,000 to,pay
part of the estimated $20,000
to be spent in planning staff
time.
