T -A photo .Santa almost shot down By Geoff Strang, Usborne Central It was a routine scouting mission in our CF -18 fighter jet planes on Christmas Eve. My buddy and I were in one plane and some other friends were in another. At first we really didn't want to fly on Christmas Eve, but later on it proved to be quite an in- teresting flight. Anyway, getting back to the story, we were flying over just north of Toronto at about midnight. Most of the towns and cities in Canada had gone to sleep long ago. We had been in the air about an hour when the radio sudenly crackeled to life. "This is defence control centre Toronto calling planes 207 and 208 come in please." Of course this was us and I replied for both of us. "Roger we read." The control centre imitate- ly replied. "There is an unidentified flying object heading towards Toronto and it doesn't answer pm- radio messages. We picked it up on long range radar. Its coming from the north and at its pre- sent rate will reach Toronto in seven minutes. Intercept at all costs." "Roger," I replied. That was the word. I was to shoot it down. My friends in the other plane heard it to. Seven minutes was not very long and we had to intercept it before it reached Toronto. It came on my radar and I said, "I am going after it". I slammed the throttles on both my engines right up into afterburner and pulled strait up to 45,000 feet. My speed was about 14,00 knots which is roughly 22 miles a minute. I was closing in on the target quickly. It was about 90 miles away which meant I could reach it in -about four minutes. My ar- mament co-pilot was warm- ing up the missiles when I said, "it is in our missile range I'll fly closer so you can give him a couple of warning shots". We came within 500 feet of him and fired a warning shot. I said, "Give him another chance, we were going pret- ty fast." This time 1 slowed the plane down to 500 knots and came even closer. I saw a red light on the object and I was mak- ing for it. This time I came within 250 feet of him and my co-pilot fired the last warning shot. This was it, he didn't turn back so I had no choice but to shoot him down. I backed behind him until I was about half a mile away. I followed him for about a minute trying to find my mark. What ('hristmas Means to Me By Diane McCarter Exeter Public School Grade 7 ('hristmas is a feeling Filling the air ICA love and joy And laughter Of people everywhere It's mistletoe And falling snow Candles burning bright It's the baby in an manger On a cold winter's night. It's an angel With a halo On top of her head In the tree shining so bright Near the fireplace so warm. decision on what missile we were to fire. We agreed on the heat seeking missile. I steadied the plane until we were in the exact position. Then I said it, "Fire ` ! " The heat seeking missile, with a mighty roar, tore away from the belly of the plane causing the plane to shake and shudder. Minutes upon minutes it seemed like we watched that missile. It seem- ed bewildered and Lost then suddenly the missile took a sharp turn and headed toward our plane. The object we were shooting at gave off no heat to attract the Missile. As the missile came shooting at us we had to self detonate it. There was a tremendos explosion, so big that it lighted up the sky enough to wake up a small village below us and a little girl with an airplane radio. Pac-Man Saves Christmas By Joanne Consitt Grade 6 Huron Centennial One Christmas Eve Santa was already to make his trip around the world, with over 1,000,000 Cabbage Patch kids. Rudolph's nose wasn't work- ing, and it was too stormy for Santa to be taking his trip without Rudolph. What was he going to do? Then Santa thought of an idea, "Pac Man!" he shouted. So Santa picked up the phone and phoned Pac Man. "Hello Pac-Man I was wondering if you would help me save Christmas?" • "Sure" "Hurry up and eat a tree full of power pellets and come to my house quick!" said Santa panicking. When Pac-Man arrived, San- ta hitched him up to his sleigh. And that h'-ight yellow body of Pac-Man's really helped Santa see! What a wonderful Christmas! Santa had gotten all of his dolls delivered. But remember! this would not have happened if it wasn't for Pac Man's bravery. My Wish at ('hristmas By Dan Thiel Grade 5 Zurich Public School •:.his year instead of wishing for toys, Like most excited girls and boys I'm going to wish for World peace and no war. Foodand water for everyone. Only police having a gun, If 1 don't get my wishes this Christmas I don't think we will have another Christmas Three area accidents No injuries were reported in the three collisions in- vestigated this week by the Exeter OPP. One of those in- volved snowmobile and was the first of the season. All three crashes were on Saturday, the first occurring on Highway 4 north of Exeter. Vehicles involved were driven by Karen McAllister, St. Catharines and Leslie Wolfenden, London. Damage was 83,000. The second occurred just south of the main intersection of Highways 4 and 84 in Hen- sall and involved vehicles driven by Hazel Catt, Forest, and Samuel Taylor, Hensall. Damage was 83,500 in that one. The other crash occurred in Zurich when a snowmobile driven by George Regier, RR 3 Zurich collided with a park- ed pickup truck. The snowmobiler was passing the truck when his machine became hooked on the curb and slid part way under the other vehicle. Damage was estimated at 8450. We were still in hot pursuit and we still had the object right were we wanted him. This time we were going to use the radar missiles. We got the missile ready and just as I was going to say fire the radio crackled to life, "Stop! Stop, you big mean people your shooting down Santa Claus," came a small voice. "Who is this", I replied sharply. "your on the defence chanal." I am Sara Lee Johns and your shooting down Santa," she replied. "Just get really close and you'll see." Giving the little girl a chance I closed within twen- ty feet of him and sure enough it was Santa. Santa waved a forgiving wave and I waved back. I thanked the little girl and all I could think of for the rest of the week is the night Santa almost got shot down. Just a little boy who is running away Santa stops and Santa said Your parents are worried So get along home and go to bed Santa said as he was off in full flight Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night. One of those things By Arlene Hoonard Usborne Central It was one of those things that most people would think could never happen, but it did. It happened on Christmas Eve. That famous reindeer Rudolph got lost while Santa was on his rounds. Nobody knows how it happened, but they do know it did happen. Anyway how I got into the pic- ture happened like this – It was the day after When Santa Broke his Arm on Christmas Eve By Michelle Chalmers Stephen Central On Christmas Eve Santa was checking the toys over once more. While he was do- ing that he broke his arm by tripping over a box. All of the elves and Mrs. Claus were worries. Who was going to give the presents to the children? Santa said that Mrs. Claus would have to take over and wear Santa's clothes. So Mrs. Claus went to every house with the reindeer and gave the children all their presents. So that year Mrs. Claus saved C.rtstmas. Garfield Christmas By Lynette Kramer Stephen Central - Grade 6 It was Christmas night and Garfield was sleeping. Odie was in the living room. He was looking to see if Santa had come yet. No present yet. Odie went back to his bed. Garfield had a dream. He dreamed that he was Santa. There was all these Garfield's playing in the snow and dogs chasing all the Garfield's. Odie went in the living room again, to see if Santa had come yet. Yes presents under the tree. Then Odie crashed into where Garfield slept. "Can't anybody get any sleep around here?" "Rut, ruf, ruf, ruf." "Oh Odie it's just you. The whole world knew that Santa's Rudolph was missing. There had even been an ad in the newspaper about it. I was walking around in a bush near our house. Knowing I wouldn't find the little reindeer, but hoping I would. Suddenly I saw something glowing in the trees ahead. My hopes rose. Could the glowing be Rudolph's red nose? Suddenly a reindeer came running toward me. It was Rudolph! As soon as he saw me Rudolph stopped dead in his tracks. Afraid he would run away I quickly pulled out some corn from pocket and held it out to Rudolph. As soon as he saw it he began to look for more. He was so hungry, I thought, he will likely follow me if I have corn in my hand. He did. When I got home I took Rudolph into the barn and fed him. Then I went into the house and called up San- ta Claus. He was very happy to know that someone had found his beloved reindeer. In two days Santa was at my house to pick up Rudolph. -The little reindeer was very happy to see Santa. His nose glowed bright red with hap- piness and he followed Santa like a dog. Santa thanked me for finding Rudolph and then he went to the airport to make the long flight back to the North Pole. To some children Christmas means being the star of their operetta, getting time off school, singing carols, getting gifts and eating a big meal. To me being the star or cen- tre of attention in an operet- ta reminds me of Gabrielle telling the shepherds about Baby Jesus. The time of school to me, signifies the preparation for Jesus's birth. Children singing carols could be angels singing. Getting gifts is like the Baby Jesus. Giving is like be- ing the three Wisemen who travelled very far. The meal is like celebrating the long awaited arrival of the promis- ed savior. Christmas has two different meanings to me! But the one that stands out, is the story of the birth of the Baby Jesus.
