Fire Chief Outlines
Plans for Christmas
Fire Safety
A happy Christmas can change in a few
moments into a family tragedy, warns Fire
Chief Gary Middleton, in homes where fire
safety precautions are neglected. Such precau-
tions should head the list of every sensible
family's preparations for Christmas, he says.
The Fire Chief urges the public to exercise
special care in the setting up and decoration
of Christmas trees, and draws attention to the
following important points:
If plans call for a natural tree it should be
bought fresh and green, and kept outdoors or
in an unheated garage before being brought
into the house for decorating. Then, one or two
inches should be cut diagonally from the butt,
and the tree should be set up with the butt in
water which should be maintained above the
level of the cut.
Check strings of electric lights carefully' for
worn insulation, broken plugs or loose bulb
sockets. Only CSA -approved lighting sets and
only non-flammable decorations should be us-
ed. Declare the tree a no -smoking area and
keep matches out of the hands of children.
Do not allow discarded gift wrapping to ac-
cumulate under the tree. Dispose of them as
soon as the gifts are opened. Even a green tree
will burn if ignited by burning paper around
the base.
Set up the tree away from heat sources such
as fireplaces, TV sets or radiators. Do not allow
it to block access to doors or windows in the
event of fire. Switch off tree lights at bedtime
or when leaving the house.

Come on hurry up it all has
to be done by 2:00.
I have to put my potatoes
on and get ready for my
rice.
So do you at all have any
advise'?
This is getting to me it's

So first of all I think I'll gc
to bed.
A Christmas Wish
By David Thiel
Zurich Public School
If I had a wish I'd wish for
peace
And no more nuclear bombs;
I'd wish that countries would
get together
To sing some joyous songs.
To get together and have
peace
Countries will never do,
But maybe by some miracle
My wish would come true.
Skiing in fluffy snow
Skiing

Skiing is fun in the white

white fluffy snow is soft.
"Onto You a Child is Born"
By Julie Lewis
St. Patrick's, Lucan
In a manger warm and safe
Lie a babe by the name of
Jesus
His mother Mary so sweet
and honest
His father a carpenter named
Joseph
In a field lie shepherds
watching their sheep
Suddenly an angel of the Lord
appeared to them and said
"Onto You A Child Is Born"
The shepherds followed the
star to the manger where
they worshipped him
Then came three wise men
from the east
They hdd also followed the
star
As gifts they gave him gold
frankincense and myrrh
And in the heavens the angels
sang
Hark the Harold Angels Sing
Glory to the New Born King!
Meaning of Christmas
By Myla Lovell
Grade 7
Huron Centennial
Christmas is a time of hap-
piness and a time of celebra-
tion. But some people really
don't know the true meaning
of Christmas.
It all started in Bethlehem
when Mary gave birth to her
new born son Jesus. Sheperd
men cane to worship Jesus
by bringing him gifts of gold,
frankincense and myrrh.
To us these days Christmas
means going out and buying
a tree and gifts for family and
friends. But some people still
don't knowthereal meaning of
Christmas. Do you? Think
about it.
The Coming of Santa Claus
By Carolyn Paquette
Exeter Public School
Grade 3, 4
Jolly old Santa Claus
On his way again.
1 can see the toys now
Under the Christmas tree.
I can hear the reindeer
prance,
On the roof right now.
The sound of Cltristntas bells.
An the fireplace the stockings
hang
Santa putting good things in
them.
I hear Santa now getting in
his sleigh.
I know it's time to ride away.
North Pole Problems
By Julia Brand
Stephen Central
One Christmas Santa had
some trouble! All his reindeer
got sick. Santa did not know
wha to do. He asked Mrs.
Clause. to make up some hot
chocolate. So She did. Mrs.
Clause brought the hot
chocolate to Santa. Then San-
ta gave it to the reindeer.
Twenty minutes later they got
better. Now Santa can bring
the toys for the children. Then
when Santa jumped down the
chimney he got stuck. And he
got out and he had to go threw
the door. And he brought toys
to all the children.

My First Time Seeing
a Snowman
By Tracy Cooper
J.A.D. McCurdy - Grade 6
It was a cold crisp wintry
morning. My mom was tak-
ing me for a walk. I was only
one year old. Why does she
bundle me up so much?
Off we go. Boy, is this a
bumpy ride. Over the hills of
snow and down the hills of
snow. Wait a minute. That's
not what I think it is. That's
not a frozen man watching the
snow birds. That's, that's...
"snowman." Right mom
you've got it. Took the words
right out of my mouth. Even
though i can't talk.
Another one! Gosh these
guys must be freezing. i hope
we get home soon. I'm
sweating to death. If I tug at
my scarf maybe... no mom,
no, I don't want to go visit
those freezing men. They
might thaw out and eat me
up. Please mom no!
"Don't cry Tracy, it's only
a snowman. it doesn't hurt
you."
That's your opinion not
mine. We're getting so close
to these balls and their not do-
ing anything. Maybe they are
safe. Maybe moms right, I'll
just enjoy the trip. if he does
come alive i'll scream my
bloody head off. is it ever tall
compared to me.
"See Tracy, that's a
snowman. It doesn't hurt."
O.k. I'm convinced now lets
leave. Oh, good. We're going
home. What an experience
seeing a snowman!
