After Keith Westlake nominated Bob Fisher and Mike O'Connor nominated Isidore LaPorte the four councillors faced the certain- ty of a tie vote. Referring to some notes written out previously, Fisher thanked his nominator and others who had encouraged him to stand for the job of reeve, mention- ed business and family com- mitments, then said if LaPorte planned to run, he would not accept the nomination. "I would not like to see a split council if the reeveship is decided by a draw from a hat as at this time we need more than anything continui- ty and cooperaton", he elaborated. Fisher announced his inten- tion of running for reeve iii the next municipal elections. When LaPorte indicated he was in the running, Fisher withdrew his name, even though pressed by Westlake to make absolutely sure he wished to decline the nomination. LaPorte is the senior coun- cillor with 11 years in office. In .acceptng the position, LaPorte said he is sure the council will have a good work- ing relationship, but warned that with a business and fami- ly he will not have as much time to devote to municipal o tte n This frosty weather is a good reminder that winter has arrived and Christmas is almost here. LaPorte expressed the wish that when residents have questions, they pose them at a council meeting instead of on the street corner. "It's a lot easier to explain at council than two days later", he added. "With five of us, I'm sure we'll have answers for people with pro- blems. We will try to stay on the same track as Don Van Patter started. He had good plans for the village. We have to do something to make this a better place to live in. I'm sure Zurich will be around in 100 years, but we have to keep improving." A lively discussion ensued to decide how to fill the new- ly created vacancy on coun- cil. Fisher, concerned about the cost of holding an election, suggested either Leroy Thiel, the loser in the last election, be asked to complete the term,or council advertise for those wishing to serve, and then make the decision. Look- ing at it from the other side, Fisher also mentioned that "the last time this happened we ended up with problems that are still hanging over our heads." O'Connor agreed that if in- terested Thiel is entitled to run, but he argued in favour of an election so people who feel they have something to contribute will have an oppor- tunity to run for council, and the voters will be given a choice. He said he had been approached by about 20 peo- /,n lei December are Mr. Chas. Fowler, Mrs. Erma Gascho, Miss Milverna Geiger and Mrs. Gerda Lovisendal. On Friday morning, the residents enjoyed the Christmas prog am. presented by the Zurich Public School. Bingo was played on Friday evening followed by refreshments. The Christmas draw for the wall hanging and pillows was also made. Con- gratulations to Mrs. Leona Phillips (Mrs. Oriole Westlake's daughter) of Lon- don who won the wall hanging and Mrs. Fergus Turnbull of the Blue Water Rest Home Apartments who won the pillows. A sincere thank -you is extended to all who bought tickets to make the project a success. We welcome Mr. Loftus Denomme to the home. He is formerly of Zurich. We regret that Miss Loretta Keller is a patient in South Huron Hospital, Exeter. Rev. Kenneth Knight of Hensel' Presbyterian Church conducted the chapel service on Sunday evening. On behalf of residents and staff, we extend a very merry Christmas to one and all. ple who all suggested that in the light of past events, an election should be held. "It will be money well spent. The term still has two years to go. The new coun- cillor should be represen- tative of the people, not representative of three members of council", he said. Westlake supported O'Con- nor's motion. An election date will be set when Zurich coun- cil meets for its next regular meeting on January 9 at 1:00 p m.
