Drama features
UC Christmas event
Many families and friends
gathered for Christmas
Family service at Lucan
United Church Sunday morn-
ing. Special feature was a
musical drama, "Two Nights
Before Christmas,"
presented by the Junior choir
and directed by Helen
Stanley.
The skeptical old janitor,
Mr. MacDuff (Matthew
Lane), who comes to clean up
the Toy Shop, complains bit-
terly about the foolishness of
the excitement of Christmas
and the extra work it makes
for him. As he dozes off in the
midst of his work, the toys
"come alive" at the magical
hour of midnight and plead
with him to tell the real mean-
ing of Christmas. He con-
fesses in song that
"Christmas doesn't mean
much to me."
Finally, he reluctantly
reads them the Christmas
story and discovers the
greatness of God's Love in
sending Jesus to be our
Saviour. As a result, he sings
of his new found faith, "Jesus
was born for me." The choir
of toys join him adding,
"Jesus was born for you, born
on Christmas Day." As the
magic hour passes, the toys
resume their former lifeless
state on the shelves of the toy
shop. Mr. MacDuff awakens
a different person.
Other characters in the
presentation besides Matthew
Lane as Mr. MacDuff were
narrator, Dana Bannerman;
Annie, Sherrie Smith; Bono,
Jane Holden; Wild Willie
WARM

parts. Choir members were

Kevin Darling, Kyle Darling,
Mary Holden, Carrie Lane,
Shelly Maguire, and Denise
Ward.
Other participants in the
service were Dave and Sue
Barr with Eric and Andrew
who greeted friends at the
door and later received the of-
fering. In addition, Dave
shared with the congregation
a reading by Henry Van
Dyck, "Keeping Christmas."
A special floral arrangement
was placer: in the sanctuary
by the Allison and Young
families in loving memory of
their mother Eva.

munion Service will be held at
the Church Saturday evening

News from
Branch 540
By George Mawdsley
'Tis the season to be jolly so
we're told, and with this in
mind we called on good old
"St. Nick" to stop by Branch
540 December 11 and spread
some good cheer to the young
children of the members.
He parked his sleigh on the
roof, and slid down the TV
antenna, and came into the
hall with a big "Ho Ho Ifo" to
the happy sound of the.
children singing "Jingle
Bells." He gave all the
children a gift and a bag of
candy and fruit, and asked
them if they had all been good
and of course they all said yes
we have.
My thanks to all the willing
helpers who helped to make
this a fun time and especial-
ly Santa (Brian) Claus, who
collected enough kisses to last
him until next Christmas.
December 16 Branch 540
hosted a Christmas party for
members and guests in the
Lounge, with mystery gift
draws and a door prize.
Entertainment was provided
by "Dwight .same" and was'
thoroughly enjoyed by
everyone.
A king-size vote of thanks
go to our bar chairman
"Gayle Riley" and the bar
staff. and the hard working
volunteers, who put it all
together. "One Ilelluva
Night". Our thanks also to the
tradespeople of Lucan for
their support. We hope this
was the first of many such
events.
Saturday December 17 we
had the grand prize draw and
dance, with the prizes being
won as follows. The *750 went
to Joe Chillingworth.
Komoka, *500 to Mrs. Joy
Hyde, Lucan and *250 to Mrs.
Linda Riley. Huron Park.
Congratulations to them all.
A fair crowd attended the
dance and made it another en-
joyable night at Branch 540. A
big thank you to the ladies for
the lunch contributions, and
of course to Vern and Sandra
Finlayson who looked after
•the bar.
If you have not yet got your
ticket to the New Years Eve
dance, they are on sate at the
nar. trrst come first served.

ChrIUmas service at Noir Trinity
Leanne sovereign and
Heather Blay of the Senior
Sunday School class were on
hand to welcome members
and friends arriving for wor-
ship at Holy Trinity Anglican
Church, Sunday. Beulah Har-
dy at the piano played several
well known Christmas songs
and carols.
The fourth candle in the Ad-
vent Wreath was lit by Don
Ankers. This candle reminds
us of Mary, who was willing,
first of all people, to let the
light of the Lord shine through
her and bring the Saviour to
the world. Because of her
fairhfulness and love, Jesus,
the Messiah, was born to us.
In opening the service,
which was a presentation of
the Sunday School Christmas
program, Jason Haskett sang
the first verse of "Once in
Royal David's City" with the
congregation joining in the re-
maining verses. The scripture
reading was from the Gospel
according to Luke 2:1-20, read
by Marion Hodgins. The
scripture account of the birth
of Jesus set the background
for the . children's
presentation.
A trio, made up of Bobbi-jo
Richards, Sarah Henderson,
and Sharon Richardson sang
"Mary's Little Boy Child."
The class of pre-schoelers,
recited a poem entitled "The
Christmas Tree" with ap-
propriate actions. Children
taking part were Jennifer
Haskett, Andrew Martens,
Lori Wood, Lindsay Hardy,
Bradley Ankers, Chad
Greenlee, Lisa Haskett, and
Heather Whitehead.
A play, "Tell Me A Story"
was acted out by the seven
and eight year olds - Brenda
Whitehead, Melissa Hardy.
John Hodgins, Debbie
Greenlee, David Wilcox,
David Pocock, Jessica Lin-
ton, Julia Van Geel, and
Robert Stotesbury-Leeson. As
the play progressed several
carols were sung to illustrate
the telling of the ever familiar
Christmas story - "Away in a
Manger", "It Came Upon the
Midnight Clear", "While
Shepherds Watched Their
Flocks by Night" and "0
Come All Ye Faithful." This
group also recited a poem,
"Our Stocking", spelled out
the word and reminding us to
fill our stockings with gifts of
peace, joy and love.
The five and six year olds.
Lisa Hardy, Kurtis Hardy,
Erin Haskett, Heather Smith,
William Stotesbury-Leeson,
Erica Wilcox, and Chris
Haskett explained the mean-
ing with "Letters of
Christmas."
The nine to eleven year olds
presented a play, "A Kettle of
Gifts". Each was colourfully
dressed as an elf and
aepesited their gifts in an iron
kettle, remembering the
spirit of Christmas with each
gift given - taking part were
Carol Smith, Derek Greenlee,
Nathan Blay, Gary Haskett,
Christa Hardy, Philip Hardy,
Cathy Atkinson, and Andrea
Van Geel.
The 12-14 year olds,
presented a humourous play
entitled "A Homemade
Poem". Each recited a verse
to describe the activity at
rehearsals, using the poem,
The Night Before Christmas,
as the underlying theme.

Eleanor Darling gave a
delightful reading "It's

jorie Steeper read a story in
which there were many
pauses where different
members filled in with
whatever was written on a
slip of paper they had been
handed previously. Needless
to say this proved to be most
humorous.
Applause reached an all

which played several

lovely anthems during the
program, under the direction
of Beulah Hardy, "Long Ago
at Candie Light" and "Sing
Noel . "
The offering was received
by Donna Shipley, Nancy
Murphy, Heather Blay and
Leanne Sovereign.
In conclusion, the entire
Sunday School accompanied
by Rev. Pocock heartily sang
"We Wish You a ,Merry
Christmas."
Revival Centre
Christianview mote College
students Sunday morning
brought special music to the
service. Nello Romagnoli
played his violin, while Wen-
dy Robertson played her
guitar, as they and Twila
Duthie sang Christmas is
Jesus.
Rev. C.J. Williams spoke
from Matthew 2:7-12. Every
time you have an encounter
with Jesus you return another
way because things are dif-
ferent when you have met
God. Only three gifts are
named the wise men brought
Jesus. Gold represents
kingship. Frankincense was a
tribute to the atonement
Jesus brought. The myrrh
was for his death. God began
giving at Christmas when He
gave His Son Jesus. Because
God is a God of giving, giving
comes as a gift from God, to
give out of love.
Sunday evening Mrs.
Marlene Thornton, accom-
panied by Mrs. Lorraine Ar-
mitage on the piano, joyfully
sang Come On, Ring Those
Bells. Special speaker for the
missions evening service was
Rick Thornton. Mr. Thornton
was born in Cuba when his
parents, Rev. and Mrs. Elvin
Thornton were missionaries
there. Castro was just taking
over then, with the town sur-
rounded. In that type of situa-
tion you learn to rely on the
Lord, as his parents did. The
family left with only what
they could carry for the
children and Mrs. Thornton's
accordion, taking a plane out,
escaping to the U.S. and then
back to Canada.
Mr. Thornton ministered
from 2 Timothy 1:6-14.
Everytl ing God wanted to
achieve on earth was in Jesus
Christ. God knew He would
have to send His own
prescious Son to be the
sacrificial Lamb for the sins
• of the world. God wanted to
bring back that close commu-
nion He had with Adam
before Adam sinned. We have
joy and happiness because
Jesus came that first
Christmas.Thiswas lost when
Adam sinned. It is God's will
as in 1 Timothy 2:4 that all
men be saved, and come to
the truth that Jesus loves us.

himself" who, with the
assistance of Harry Noels
