Spotlight
By Ross Haugh
Here we go with the 51st and final column for the
year :983 as we prepare for the festive season. Along
with this comes the memories of the year just past and
hopes for the 12 months ahead.
The highlight of the year on the local sporting scene
is probably the large number of area youngsters par-
ticipating in a wide variety of events.
More boys and girls than ever have been par-
ticipating in baseball, softball, soccer, bowling, hockey,
ringette, gymnastics, and figure skating in addition to
high school sports which include basketball, football
field hockey and cheer leading.
While many persons judge a sports success by the
number of championships won, we feel the most impor-
tant factor is the number of participants who are lear-
ning not only how to win, but, to lose gracefully.
One sport which is growing by'leaps and bounds is
soccer. The number of minor soccer teams this past
year in Exeter, Grand Bend and Lucan increased with
close to 600 boys and girls.taking part in these three
communities.
In a time when costs of equipping hockey and
baseball teams are rising, soccer expenses are much
lower. While most clubs are outfitted properly with
shorts and sweaters, the only other expense is the ball,
compared to hockey sticks, skates and the necessary
equipment and baseballs, gloves and bats.
The year of the Jays
The 1983 season was the best ever during the seven
year existence of the Toronto Blue Jays and the upcom-
ing year should be better.
The Jays have started to strengthen for the 1984
season by acquiring Bryan Clarke, a promising left
handed pitcher from the Seattle Mariners. While Clark's
statistics at Seattle are not overwhelming it must be
remembered the Mariners were basement dwellers in
the American league eastern division.
The Toronto club will likely make a trade this week
with Kansas City for Willie Aikens, hoping Commis-
sioner Bowie Kuhn will lift the suspension in early May.
Aikens, a long ball left handed hitter would make
a great designated hitter to platoon with Cliff Johnson
giving the Jays power from both sides of the plate.
We would hope the Blue Jays are able to sign at
least one free agent, hopefully another pitcher either
as a starter to complement Dave Stieb, Jim Clancy and
Luis Leal or help in the bullpen.
The Detroit Tigers appear to be serious about win-
ning a pennant in 1984 going the free agent route for the
first time in signing Darrell Evans.
A Lion or Gambler?
The hottest news to end the old year and start a new
one' will likely surround Detroit Lions great running
back Billy Sims.
Sims has signed a five year contract with the Lions
after apparently doing the same with the Houston
Gamblers of the USFL.
This controversy will probably be settled in the
courts and soon as USFL practices start shortly after
the Super Bowl is decided in late January.
Hawks tourney set to go
Final touches are being put to plans for the annual
Exeter Hawks junior D hockey tournament which is set
for the South Huron Rec centre on the weekend of
January 7 and 8.
Tournament co -conveners Gerald Dearing and
Gerald Willis have lined up eight top notch junior D
clubs and excellent action is assured in the single
knockout competition.
The defending champion Grand Valley Harvesters
will be back to play in the opening game of the tourney
at 12 noon on Saturday against the Thamesford Trojans.
At 2: 30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, the Exeter Hawks
come up against one of the newer .Junior D clubs from
Ayr. At 5 p.m. it will be Seaforth versus Howick and the
St. George Lions and Lucan Irish tangle at 7:30 p.m.
The semi-final games splitting the winners of Satur-
day's four games will be played at noon and 2:30 p.m.
on Sunday with the championship contest slated for 8
p.m.
Flat for two games
Hawks squeak through with a victory and tie
Complacency is often one of
the results of success and it is
one of the factors the Exeter
Hawks are facing as they en-
joy a runaway lead in the nor-
thern division of the Western
Junior "D" loop.
That complacency was evi-
dent in two weekend outings
by the locals as they were
hard-pressed to pick up a tie
and a win. Friday night, they
rallied from a three -goal
deficit and then blew a late
lead to tie Seaforth 7-7 and on
home ice, Sunday, they
managed a 3-2 win over the
defending OHA champion
Tavistock Braves.
The Hawks were flat in both
contests, made numerous
mistakes and needed a bit of
luck to get the three points
which put them 14 ahead of
the second place Lucan Irish.
They now have three games
in hand over the Irish, who
are followed in order in the
division by Thedford,
Seaforth and Tavistock.
The Hawks have only one
outing this week when they
travel to Tavistock on Friday
in an attempt to avenge an
earlier loss there. They host
Thamesford the following
Friday.
Tie Ceatenaires
The Seaforth Centenaires,
smarting from two drubbings
in Exeter, were fired up when
they hosted the Hawks, Fri-
day, and quickly jumped into
a 4-1 lead in the first but
couldn't hold on as they had to
settle for a tie.
The Hawks cut the margin
to 6-5 after two periods and
appeared to have another win
as they scored twice in the
third, but the hosts evened the
Recording setting on the court
Each and every baseball, hockey and football
season some memorable occasions occur which draw
comments such as, "That will never happen again."
This time we have reason to believe what happen-
ed on the home basketball court of the Denver Nuggets
of the National Association Tuesday night will never be
equalled.
The same thing could have been said on March 7,
1982 as San Antonio defeated Milwaukee 171 to 166 for
a total of 337 points. That high score was NBA record
for two teams in regularly scheduled play. That is un-
til Tuesday night in Denver.
That night the Denver Nuggets and Detroit Pistons
went to three overtime periods before the Pistons finally
won by a score of 186-184 in a game that required three
hours and 11 minutes to complete.
As would be expected a number of team and in-
dividual records were broken. In addition to the highest
score ever, the 93 assists broke the NBA mark of 89 set
by Detroit and Cleveland on March 28, 1973 and the 142
field goals eclipsed the record of 136 set by Milwaukee
and San Antonio in the high scoring 1982 contest.
The 74 field goals by the Pistons broke the previous
record of 72 set by Boston against Minneapolis on March
7, 1959.
While the 186 points chalked up the Pistons is an all-
time high, the 173 scored by the Boston Celtics against
Milwaukee on February 27, 1959 will continue to stand
as the record for a regulation game.
in closing we would like to wish all a very Merry
and Blessed Christmas followed by a Happy and Pro-
sperous New Year.

Generals fly
beat St. Marys
The Exeter Generals were
flying Wednesday night as
they downed St. Marys 9-1 at
the South Huron Rec Centre
in a Shamrock midget game,
but, were shot down in
Parkhill Friday as they drop-
ped a 8-1 decision.
In the victory over St.
Marys coach Ron Bogart said
his team made only one
mistake and that was in
allowing the only opposition
goal with only a minute and 11
secc,nds left in the game.
The Generals scored three
times in the first period in the
win over St. Marys with Steve
Gould, Chris Tiedeman and
David Skea doing the scoring.

The Hawks dominated play
after the first and had a total
of 49 shots on Seaforth's Mike
MacDonald, while Dave Rook
turned aside 30 shots in addi-
tion to the seven which elud-
ed him.
Both teams scored three
powerplay goals as Seaforth
sat out 13 of the 23 penalties
called.
Rally for win
At home, Sunday, the
Hawks again found
themselves down early as the
Braves took a 2-0 Lead in the
first as the locals had con-
siderable difficulty clearing
their own defensive zone.
Rich Lather potted two
tallieS in the middle frame to
knot the count and Kris
Bedard notched the winner
early in the third as his inno-
cent looking backhander
handcuffed goalie Mike
Oliver.
Both Lather's goals were
along the ice as the deft cen-
treman jumped on a rebound
for his first tally and then took
a centering pass from Mike
Clark to record the other.
Scott Brintnell, Bedard, Bill
Glover and Steve Prout pick-
ed up the other assists.
The Braves had numerous
scoring chances as they were
continually handed the puck
by the Hawks, but Pete Dear-
ing shut the door on them
after the first. He ended up
with 35 saves, compared to 29
by Oliver and that marked the
first time this season the
Hawks had been out.shot on
home ice.
Exeter took 10 of the 16
minors called before a small
crowd.
