All over the world, people
are stringing up colored
lights, and lighting candles to
celebrate Christmas. Many
will have forgotten, or
perhaps have never known,
why they do so.
Light has always been a
symbol of good, of knowledge
and understanding. We often
speak of shedding light on a
subject when something new
has been opened up or
discovered.
The Jewish Sabbath begins
with the ritual lighting of
candles by the mother of the
house, a reminder that light
was one of the first acts of
creation. The Sabbath ends
with the father saying a
prayer, his hands spread
toward the lighted candles, as
if longing for light.
It has been man's quest
down through the ages to look
for light, and surely the world

Well, we all know how false
those predictions were. Not :
much wonder young people, ,`," j.
viewing the dreary record of Nit
mankind of the past 70 years,
have given up to
hope 'ssness. Instead of com-
ing into an utopian age of ;j
light, we walk in darkness.
Centuries ago, Isaiah, that
royal statesman and
counsellor to kings spoke of, .``S)
"The people that walked in
darkness", but he went on to
say they saw a great light.
And the light was "a Child
born for us, a Son given to us,:

Years later, when the pro-
phecy came true, St. John
wrote, He (Christ) was the
real Light, who in His coming,
gives light to every man."
Nothing could be much
clearer than either the words
of Isaiah or John, yet, many
did not care to see or walk in
and dominion is laid on His
shoulders and His name shall
be Wonderful Counseller,
Mighty God, Eternal Father
and Prince of Peace."

the Light when it did come'.
They preferred the darkness.
And what of us, we who are
so proud of all our scientific
elightenment? What of us? Do
we not, like the people of old,
continue to walk in the
darkness of our fears, our
greed, power, hate and
hopelessness? It's understan-
ding that our youngsters have
no hope in our achievements.
So, if we give up on
mankind to rescue us from
the darkness or our times, to
whom can we turn? No
one...except the One of whom
Isaiah spoke, the One.

ago while angels lighted up
the skies and sang of His com- .
ing. He is the Hope for whom
we light our candles and
string up our lights, each
Christmas.
But strangely enough, this
Jesus, speaking to us, his
followers, says, "You are the
light of the world...." In other
words, "You are it's Hope."
Which brings us right back to
the human race of which we
are all a part, and which has
done so badly up to now.
The trouble is, mankind has
never yet tried Jesus's way of
justice and love, forgiveness
and trust. 'It's too risky, our
statesmen say; but if we don't
risk it we may well be blown
out of existence.
It may sound simplistic.but
it seems, to me, if each of us,
in our own small way, in our
own small community would
practice a little more trust, a
little more forgiveness and
love, and uphold that which is
