The Etherington's Rick Karen, Derek, and Robyn. , 50c Mary's Musings Continued from page 7A their lives, and they have started a crusade to spread the. word about seatbelts. The testamonies I read in a recent article were very convincing. Often people use the excuse that they don't wear a seatbelt because it will con- fine them, if the car catches fire or is submerged in water. Nonsense. If you wear your seatbelt regularly, unfasten- ing becomes second nature -- you do it without thinking about what you are doing. You would respond the same way in an emergency -- in fact, you would probably be thinking more clearly because you hadn't been bumped around in the crash. I was once involved in a very minor accident, where 1 wasn't wearing a seatbelt, but it was just enough to convince me to wear one in the future. We were driving down a very icy city street, when a car !coming towards us slid into our lane and hit us head on. Neither car had been moving very fast at all, because of the treacherous conditions. Damage to the vehicles was minimal. But even though it was just a slight crash, I received a good, hard thump on my head when I bit the windshield, and a nasty gash on my knee where it hit a CB radio hanging below the dash. I count myself as very for- tunate. 1 learned the value of keatbelts in an inexpensive and easy lesson. Some people pay a much, much higrter price to learn the importance of buckling up. Please don't learn the hard way. GARDINER — Wishing my friends and relotives o Joyous and Blessed Christmas and a Peaceful and Happy New Year. 50' Mory.
