Irish get a tie

The Lucan Irish gained a
single point in two Ontario
Hockey Association Western
Junior D games this week to
up their season points total to
20, good for second place in
the league standings, three
points ahead of the third place
Seaforth Centenaires.
The Irish dropped a close
7-6 decision to the Exeter
Hawks in Lucan Wednesday
and Sunday night held the
bombers to a 6-6 draw.
The :rish will see action on
three occasions this week
Tonight, Wednesday they
play host to Seaforth at the
Lucan Community Centre at
8:15 p.m. and then it's on the
road for the next two games.
They will be in Thamesford
Friday and travel to Thed-
ford, Sunday night.
In Sunday's tie with Bel-
mont, John Medd notched the
sixth and final Lucan goal to
get the tie with only a minute
and three seconds remaining
in the third period on passes
from Jamie Shipley and
Lester Arts.
The Irish notched a pair of
goals in the opening 20
minutes of play. Jamie
Shipley scored on a three-way
passing combination with Jeff
Skinner and captain Paul
Wraith and combined with
Dave Egan to set up Lester
Arts for a successful shot.
The only Irish marker of
the middle frame was notch-
ed by rookie Wayne Urbshott
on an unassisted effort.
In the third period, Paul
Wraith hit the Belmont net on
passes from Todd Charlton
and Dave Egan and Lester
Arts registered on a play
started by Jeff Skinner and
Wraith before Medd fired the
equalizer.
Scoring in single fashion for
Belmont were Rob Mooren,
Jamie McPherson, captain
Jeff Stock, Dan Chauvin,
Chris Waldeck and Karl
Hepburn.

Jerry Lamport scored three
unanswered goals in the third
period to clinch the Huron
Park victory. Getting assists
were Dave Bryanston, Steven
Lightfoot, Mike Conlin and
Bill Johnson.
Earlier in the game, Mike
McCann scored on an
unassisted effort and provid-
ed a pass for a successful shot
by Mike Conlin. The other
score for the winners was
registered by Steven
Lightfoot on a pass from
Conlin.
The only score for Exeter
came from the stick of Jeff
Hannah on a pass from Pat
Hartman.

Saturday in Goderich, the
local atoms were defeated
10-2 and Sunday on home ice
at the South Huron Rec Cen-
tre they were edged 3-2 by St.
Marys.
In the loss to Goderich, the
only Exeter goal came from
the stick of Jason Heywood as
he converted a pass from
Jason Hern.
Sean O'Brien was the top
scorer for Goderich with a
four goal performance while
Sam Ilosack added a pair and
Ryan Fagan, Todd Papple.
Chad Papple and Paul
Hamilton added singles.
Against St. Marys, David
Schwindt notched the first
Exeter goal on a three-way
passing effort with Allan
McFalls and Jamie Cornish
and Craig MacEachern
registered on passes from
Jimmy Ahrens and Jason
Heywood.
Captain Greg Betteridge
led St. Marys with all three
goals.

Generals get two victories
The Exeter Generals
midgets scored two straight
victories in Shamrock minor
hockey' league action this
week to up their season
record to seven and six and
over the .500 mark for the first
time. A year ago at the same
time the team had won only
three times in 13 starts.
Wednesday night the
Generals edged Parkhill 2-1
and Monday night they
prevailed over St. Marys by a
score of 6-4.
In the win over Parkhill,
George Pratt led the Generals
with a first period goal on a
pass from Bud Richardson
and scored the second and

impressive record
The Exeter Mohawks im-
proved their South Huron in-
termediate hockey league
record to an impressive 10
victories and one loss with a

The Mohawks will be back

town Pirates beat the Zurich
Buckeyes by a score of 6-2.
Scoring the first goal of the
game for the Buckeyes was
Rick Moody as he converted
a pass from Wayne Thiel.
Afte Parkhill scored six
straight times, Darryl Telford
completed the Buckeyes scor-
ing on pass from Ken Merner.
Brian Martin was the top
Parkhill goal getter with two
successful shots. Getting one

Bryanston Friendship Club
The December meeting of
Bryanston Friendship Club
was held at the North Star
restaurant at Elginfield
December 7 Despite weather
conditions there were 44) in
attendance.
Santa arrived just before
dinner and what a surprise to
all seniors citizens. He
presented the ladies with cor-
sages and the men received a
candy cane. compliments of
the Bryanston-Birr Optimist
Club.
A turkey dinner was served
and enjoyed by all of us.
Chester McCombs said
Grace A short program
followed the dinner with
Audrey McRoberts in charge,
she read a poem, also con-
ducted a game "Going Home
For Christmas" which was
enjoyed. Happy Birthday was
sung for December birthdays,
Ada Smith, Wreatha Burnett.

McRoberts. Mary Cooper and
Bill Hodgins.
Mary Cooper and Ambrose
Powell were winners of
parcel pass game. Susan
McComb had the lucky chair

Dorothy Bullock was in
charge of the singing of
Christmas carols.
The committee had a live-
ly treat for all. A vote of
thanks was given to Audrey
and Elliott McRoberts and
Ella Frayne. The next
meeting is to be held January
4, 1984.

spirit throughout. It was by
far our best output of the year
and it was only Parkhill's se-

The Generals scoring in the
Monday win over St. Marys
was well spread with six
players getting one goal
apiece.
After St. Marys had taken
a 1-0 first perioc' lead, the
Generals bounced back to
lead 3-2 after two periods of
action and also outscored the
opposition by one goal in the
final session.
Dave Skea, John Hannah
and George Pratt were the
marksmen for the Generals in
the second period with assists
going to Scott Bogart, Chris
Tiedeman and Scott Lovie.
In the third period, Bill
Fisher, Andy Lerikos and
Scott Lovie registered for the
Generals. Assisting were
George Pratt, Bud Richard-
son, Terry Zachar• Jim Lewis
and Sean Whiteford.
The same two teams go
right back to a return game
tonight, Wednesday at the
South Huron Rec Centre.
About 70 attend
Baskefbafl camp successful
This year South Huron
District High School started a
basketball camp for kids of
public school age interested in
learning some basic skills of
the game. The program ran
for ten weeks and around 70
Boys basketball
gets underway
The South Huron's boys'
basketball team begins its
regular season play today
with a match against Mit-
chell. In the last few weeks
the team has been fairly ac-
tive, playing 13 games in pre-
season tournaments and
matches.
The senior Panthers played
in a tournament in Listowel
over the weekend finishing in
second place after defeating
both h'gh schools from Strat-
ford, Stratford Central and
Stratford Northwestern. This
put the Panthers in the tour-
nament finals where they lost
to Mitchell.
About a week ago, the Pan-
thers travelled to their
coach's old high school,
Regina Munch, in London.
They finished in second place
here as well.
The senior boys began their
pre -season play with a set of
three exhibition matches
emerging from them with a
1-2 record. In the first, they
defeated a team from
Parkhill's North -Middlesex
High School. In the days that
followed the boys were
defeated by teams from
Strathroy and Woodstock.
Coach O'Rourke is quite
confident that the team will
be successful this year, and
predicts that the Panthers
should make the finals. The
boys themselves share
O'Rourke's confidence. Team
member Tony Wales feels
that they should end the
season either in the finals or
semi-finals. He. also thinks
they will qualify to play in
WOSSA.
Before holidays, the boys
will play in four more games.
During the break the team
hopes to hold a few practices
but will not participate in any
tournaments or games until
the new year.

The Exeter juveniles
recorded their first Shamrock
minor hockey league win of
the season at the South Huron
Rec Centre Saturday as they
downed Parkhill 10-4.
The game was only 21
seconds old when Don
Hamilton converted a pass
from Brent Dawson.
Peter Janssen was the lop
sharpshooter with a three
goal effort while Darren Moir
scored twice and Eric
Tadgell, Ahmad Osman,
Steve Hawkins and Randy
Bilcke scoring in single
fashion.
Derek McKinnon was the
top playmaker with four
assists to his credit. Eric
Tadgell, Jeff Bridge, and Don
Hamilton each helped two
goals and Steve Hawkins,
Randy Bilcke, Ahmad Oman
and Darren Moir each gained
one assist.
Molting Hawks
tie with Lambeth
The Exeter Molting hawks
played to a 6-6 tie with the
Lambeth Blues in a regular-
ly scheduled oldtimers
hockey game Monday night at
the South Huron Rec Centre.
Keith Ahrens and Bob
Jones each fired. two suc-
cessful shots to pace the
Molting Hawks to their vic-
tory. Getting one goal apiece
were Pete McFalls and Bill
Chipchase.
Bill Chipchase, Mike
Cushman and Pete McFalls
led in a playmaking depart-
ment with two assists each.
Helping on one score apiece
were Bob Jones, Al Flynn and
Jack Chipchase.

CHAMPIONSHIP FOR McOILLIVRAY - The McGillivray Central School girls
volleyball team recently won the championship of the East Williams invitational tour-

Rec activities for
Christmas holidays

The South Huron Rec Cen-
tre offers a list of activities
available to youngsters dur-
ing the Christmas Break from
December 19 - 23.
A snow sculpturing contest
will take place on Monday
afternoon from 1:00 - 3:00
p.m. Youngsters should start
organizing their team of five
now and get some ideas
together for their sculpture.
Prizes are available to the
top three entries, thanks to
Kentucky Fried Chicken, the
Rec ('entre and the Pizza
Train. Judging will take place
at 3:00 p.m. If there is no
snow, a free skate will take its
place from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. at
the arena.
On Tuesday December 20th
and Thursday December 22 a
bus load will head to Vanastra
for a switn period from 10:00
- 11:00 a.m. The cost to
youngsters for the bus and
swim period is $3.00 per
youngster for each day.
The bus will leave the rec
centre at 9:15 a.m. sharp on
Tuesday and Thursday.
There is a limit of 40 on the
bus for each trip, so
youngsters must pre -register
at the rec centre by Friday
December 16.
On the afternoon of the 20th
and the 22nd, a free skate will
take place from 1:30 - 3:30
p.m.

21,'Christmas Cartoon
Classics" go from 9:30 - 10:15
a.m. followed by a free skate
until 11:30 a.m. Cartoons cost
25t per youngster.
In the afternoon from 1:30
- 4:00, the movie "Babes in
Toyland" will be featured in
the hall. Admission for the
movie will be $1.50 per
youngster.
On Friday December 23
from 9:30 - 12:00 a.m, we'll
wrap up the week with a
"Fun -On -Ice" skate competi-
tion. Events include a speed
skate, an obstacle course, and
hockey shooting for boys and
ringette shooting for girls.
Youngsters are divided in-
to the following categories:
junior boys (age 6 - 9), junior
girls (age 6 - 9), senior boys
(age 10 - 13), senior girls (age
10 - 13)
Prizes will go the the cham-
pion in each category based
on the highest number of
points for the morning.
Fun -On -Ice championship
prizes are thanks to the dona-
tions of Jerry MacLeans and
RSD Sports Den. Youngsters
are required to pre -register
for "Fun -On -Ice" at the Rec
Center by Friday December
16.
Please pre -register your
youngsters for the Vanastra
swims and Fun -On -Ice. We
need to know numbers before
next week's actvities begin.

The public schooler basket-
ball camp closed last week
after a very productive and
successful 10 weeks. On the
final night Tuesday, the kids
were treated to pop and South
Huron's famous cookies.
Several prizes were handed
out in a draw held at the end
of the evening. Several
amature athletic organiza-
tions and local businesses
donated prizes to the camp;
namely RSD Sport Den,
Canadian Tire and MacLean
Sports, Tuckey Beverages,
Al -Pro Basketball Camp
Olympia Sports Camp. OABA
Junior Development Pro-
gram as well as the High
School itself.
Chief organizer Terry
O'Rourke is very pleased with
the success of the program
and plans to repeat it next
year.
