into dolicate flowers
Martha Weigand,
Dashwood, has been
demonstrating the knack of
turning slices of bread into at-
tractive, realistic little
flowers to Womens Institutes
in Grand Bend and
Dashwood, and to the ladies
attending Morning Break at
the United Church in Zurich.
She first removes the crusts
from a slice of fresh white
bread, adds one tablespoon of
white glue and some food col-
ouring, and begins to knead
the ingredients together. Mrs
Weigand assures her au-
dience the sticky mass even-
tually comes unglued from
the fingers and can be form-
ed into a smooth ball, ready
for the next step.
Pinching off a piece of
dough the size of a pea, Mrs.
Weigand flattens it out,
shapes it into the curled inner-
most petal of a rose, and
presses it onto the top of a
piece of florists' wire or a
toothpick. Four or five more
petals are moulded and fitted
around the first petal.
When Mrs., Weigand is
satisfied with her creation,
she sets it aside to dry for
three or four days. It is then
sprayed with varnish, dried
again, and wrapped in
florists' tape. She has also ex-
perimented with leaving the
flowers white, and painting
them later with nail polish.
One is limited only by her
imagination, Mrs. Weigand
says, and proves her point by
exhibiting a daisy, a daffodil,
a calla lily and a violet.
Mrs. Weigand arranges her
bouquets in pieces of oasis in
little ceramic baskets she has
made, or pretty cosmetic jars
she has saved. With the addi-
tion of dried baby's breath,
artificial greenery, or
whatever else her creativity
suggests, the miniature ar-
rangements are ready to be
taken to a friend in hospital,

Mrs. Weigand takes no
credit for originating the
bread flowers. She got the
idea from her sister, who at-
tends a large craft show each
year near Orlando, Florida,
and brings something new in
handiwork back to Canada
each year.

Happy birthday was sung
for several members and any
new members were
welcomed.
After the motion to adjourn
the business, the program
under Mrs. Olive Ostland and
Marjorie Arthur was con-
ducted and caused much
merriment.
Marjorie Arthur gave two
Christmas readings, two
duets from Mrs. Olive
Ostland and Ken Johns were
enjoyed. They were "Star of
the East" and "In the
Garden", the audience join-
ing in.
There followed a sing song
of Christmas carols led by
Gerald Skinner. Following
this were several motions,
songs, guessing contests and
a novelty bingo game.

held January 2, 1984 at 1 p.m.
