The second ballot gave Bishop Jones a majority in both houses: 104 clergy votes and 245 votes from lay delegates. Bishop Jones told the 617 delegates he saw his election as a "mandate to continue the kind of episcopal leadership" presently exercised in the Diocese which stretches from Windsor to Brantford and from Owen Sound to the shores of Lake Erie. "There is a need to share episcopal ministry so bishops can get to know the people in the parishes " Bishop Jones said. Bishop Jones was born in Ridgetown in 1925, attended school there and in London, and is a graduate of Huron College, university of Western Ontario. He served in parishes in the Dioceses of Rupert's Land, Ontario and Huron. His last parish ap-. pointment was rector of St. James (Westtninster) Lon- don. He was appointed Canon of St. George's Cathedral, Kingston. and Canon Precen- tor of St. Paul's Cathedral, London in 1970. In 1978 he became Archdeacon of Mid- dlesex and was elected Suf- fragan Bishop in 1982. Bishop Jones' experience includes extensive involve- ment in radio and television production, including regular programs with. C B.C. and local radio station. Light candles at Granton Happy Gang celebrate season By MRS. E. SUMMERS Gronton Unit (5) of the Grinton U.C.W. met at the home of Mrs. Emerson Wallis, on Thursday. Mrs. Chas. AtcRobert presided. Roll call was "Name one thing. other than Christmas that you liked about the month of December." Seven members and three visitors were present. Following the business period. everyone participated in a Christmas program when interesting stories, poems and Christmas carols were en- joyed. Mrs. Ina Hariton clos- ed the meeting with prayer. Each member contributed to the lunch which resulted in a bounteous meal. A gift ex- change followed, ending another year of fellowship and participation. Explorer news The Granton Explorers met in the church basement on Nov. 21. We said the purpose. motto and repeated a hymn. Carrie Wallis read us a Bible story and roll call was "What is your favourite animal". The treasurer's report was $1.75. Carrie Wallis planned this meeting. Corrie Anderson earned her 1st blue star as well as Tam- my Zapora. Angela Oliver earned her 1st gold and Sheila Carty her 2nd gold star. Kel- ly Sweetzir also earned her 1st red star. For the rest of the meeting we played games and at 8:30 p.tn. closed with "Taps" We did not have a meeting last Monday. Becky Bryan secretary. Happy Gang party The "Happy Gang" held their Christmas Party in the United Church basement on Nov. 30. The meeting opened with a welcome to everyone by Pres. Charlotte Kerr, this was followed by Grace said by the Rev. Bruce Pierce. then everyone sat down to a sump- tous hot turkey dinner and all the trimmings. This lovely meal was catered to by Unit 31 of the U C.W. At the conclusion of the meal guest speaker Pat Carey of London a retired real estate broker gave a talk with advice on how to go about selling your property or the contents of your home. The afternoon was spent in a friendly game of cards. not progressive Euchre as the weather was getting worse and quite a few people had a distance to go. Medway Euchre Club The Medway Euchre Club met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Lewis, Den- field on Nov. 28 Prize winners were the following members: ladies high score, Muriel Cobleigh; lone hands. Bruce Pierce was in charge of the worship for the 2nd Sunday in Advent. The minister entitled his message "The Humanity of Jesus" What can be said about man can be said about Jesus, only that Jesus did not suc- cumb to temptation. Zone Commander Mary Hawn from Kincardine made her official visit bringing highlights from a Zone Meeting held in Kincardine. A Zone bus trip is in the plann- ing for the spring and the 1984 Convention will be held in Niagara Falls in September First vice-president Irene Jackson presented Zone Com- mander Hawn with a gift on behalf of the Ladies Auxiliary Kate Bierling and her group served lunch. The Auxiliary Christmas Party will be held Monday. December 12 with a short business meeting at 7 p.m. followed by a pot luck supper at 7:30 p.m. Secret Pals will be revealed at this meeting. Following the service the Sunday School held their Christmas party in the church basement. At the St. Thomas Anglican Church the Rev. Peter Der- rick was the Celebrant of the Holy Eucharist assisted by John Herbert as server. The ceremony of the lighting of the first two candles in the Advent Wreath signifying peace and faith was performed by David Jones and Kayline Roloson. The first reading was read by Helen Herbert and the Epistle was read by Sylvia Beatson. In the Children's focus the rector explained the meaning of the Advent wreath. The Rev. Derrick gave each child a saw to hang on the Bethlehem Tree. In his sermon the rector enlarged on the experience of the Scriptures, the Bible trains and encourages us to live and walk by the Spirit, we should love God and not forget to love ourselves On Sunday evening November 77 the members of St. Thomas Anglican Church held a meeting in connection with the Leprosy Mission. when the guest speaker was the Rev. L.G. Stairs of Brant- ford, who gave a very educa- tional and informative talk il- lustrated by slides, of the pro- gress that is being made in the world today towards cur- ing and caring for those who are afflicted with this dread disease. A coffee hour followed when the Rev. Stairs was happy to answer questions. PETER MARTIN Thursday evening the United Church Women met in the Sunday School auditorium for.their Christmas worship. Nola Ratz, Elva Lamport and Marg Wilson presented the Christmas story in Scripture and Music. Leila Finkbeiner played the piano for the Christmashymns. An excerpt from Handels Messiah was played from a tape. Business was chaired by president Marie Fydenchuk. Over 5000 copies of "Our Best To You" cookbook have been sold and more are being printed. Donations are still being received for the bakeless bake sale. Lunch was served by Erma Krueger, Gloria Martin, Mary Elder, Nola Faist and Thelma Finkbeiner. This weekend the Crediton and District Social Club held their Christmas events. About 65 couples danced to the music of Silver Dollar Satur- day evening. A turkey supper was provided by the lunch committees headed by Bob and Dianne Finkbeiner. The Childrens Christmas party, Sunday, was well at- tended with 139 children receiving treats from the club. Films were shown and Santa Claus made his annual. appearance. Just a reminder that Harvey Hodgins still has New Years Eve tickets on a first come first serve basis.
