The library board's initial guidelines called for the pro- ject to be sponsored by coun- ty council in co-operation with the library board and that a committee made up of chief librarian BW Partridge and two councillors to recom- mend the appointment of an editor to oversee the publica- tion's progress. But it wasn't these guidelines that bothered many councillors. It was the March 15 deadline for copy Museum fate step further Huron County Council mov- ed one step further at its December 1 meeting to deter- mining the fate of the Huron County Pioneer Museum. Council approved a $27,050 feasibility study on the museum to be prepared by Museum Program Col- labroative of Toronto. The Toronto firm was chosen over three other com- panies, two of which had lower bids. "I would appreciate further explanation why this firm was chosen when two others came in at considerably less money", stated Stanley Township Reeve Paul Steckle. Agriculture and property committee chairman Lionel Wilder said his committee in- terviewed each of the four companies and Museum Pro- grams Collaborative gave the best presentation which was suited more to the county needs. Wilder noted that the firm with the lowest bid of $16,757 doesn't have the staff that would be necessary to com- pile the study. Clerk - treasurer William Hanly add- ed that the firm comes highly recommended. The feasibility study is sub- ject to approval by the Na- tional Museums of Canada and the Ministry of Citizen- ship and Culture. Wilder said 75 percent of the study could be paid for by National Museums and the county is waiting to hear back on ap- proval of this funding. If this funding is denied, the provin- cial ministry will fund 50 per- cent of the study. Exeter Reeve Bill Mickle said the future of the museum affects every citizen in the county and he hopes the con- sulting firm will consider public input when it is prepar- ing the study. Lynn back as chairman Irene Lynn of McGillivray Township and Carol Small of Lobo Township have been returned by acclamation to be chairman and vice-chairman respectively of the Middlesex board of education for the 1963-84 year. They served in these posi- tions since May of 1983. Both were first elected to the board in 1960. Exeter Deputy Reeve Lossy Fuller said the size of the atlas has to be controlled and she isn't in favor of the patron's directory because of the $3S fee that i4 proposed to be paid for listing in such a direc"That's not what an atlas is to me", commented Reeve Fuller In regards to the patron's directory. She was also concerned that although there was a patron's directory accommodated in the 1879 county atlas, a 1964 atlas containing a patron's directory would become too large. Partridge said today's population in the county is similar to the 1879 population figures. He added that the patron's directory would be in smaller type and that a similar atlas done last year in Perth County had a tour -page patron's directory made up of 400 names. Stanley Township Reeve Paul Steckle said he wants to see a "number one atlas" as the final product and didn't think there is any rush to complete such a project. Partridge told council that to be eligible for bicentennial grants the project has to be completed in 1984. The chief librarian also noted that the A LITTLE DAB WILL DO - Gwen Dykeman gives Dawn Morley's make-up o final touch while Carrie Dykeman looks on. The children were part of the Dykeman, Morley, Dearing float in Exeter's Santo Claus parade. Varna couple celebrate By Mary Chessell Bob and Elva Peck celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on December 1 and were honoured on two oc- casions recently. Friends and neighbours surprised them at a gathering at the home of Jim and Kate Keys on November 28. On December 3 and 4, Bob and Elva's six children, their spouses and three of their nine grand- children joined the guests of honour at Wheels Motor Inn, Chatham. Everyone had a great time swimming, bowl- ing and enjoying the other facilities. A Sunday afternoon banquet at the Venus de Milo Restaurant in Chatham was the culmination of an en- joyable weekend of family fellowship. The annual Senior Citizen's Christmas Party sponsored by the Recreation Commis- sion is being held at the township hall in Varna on Thursday, December 15 at 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon. So come on out, all you "seniors" and have a good time. Pete and Lynda Postill returned loll Wednesday November 30 from a two- week trip to the West Coast. They stayed for a few days with Graham and Bev Postill of Airdrie, Alta. and visited Mel and Doris Simmons of Calgary and Jeff Gibbings and Sharon Thompson of Sylvan Lake. Marshall and Bev took them up to Rocky Mountain House, Jasper and Lake Louise. On their bus trip through the mountains they stopped at Rogers Pass, Kelowna and Vernon. While touring the Van- couver area they stayed with Jon Murray Torrance in Sur- rey. Interesting places they saw there were Downtown Vancouver with the densest population in the world at 50,000 people per square mile, and • the South Shore com- munities where there are 200 to 300 thousand dollar homes, some even worth over a million. They saw the Lion's Gate Bridge, visited the McMillan -Bloedel Conser- vatory, Vancouver Aquarium, Queen Elizabeth Park, Gastown and Chinatown, which has the largest Chinese community in North America. Grey Cup revellers were everywhere. They took the Royal Vic- torian Tour of Lulu Island, Delta Island which is sur- rounded by dykes because it's below sea level, Saanich Island, an Indian community, the museum in Victoria, the Empress Hotel and the English style shops, also saw the beautiful Parliament Buildings lit up at night. But - chart Gardens were beautiful, even in winter. Margaret Dowson, Norene Hayter and Alice Boyce.
